Analysis of prehistoric brown earth paleosols under the podzol soils of Exmoor, UK
The deforestation of the upland landscapes in southwest Britain during prehistory is an established archaeological narrative, documenting human impacts on the environment and questioning the relationship of prehistoric societies to the upland landscapes they inhabited. Allied to the paleoenvironmental analyses of pollen sequences, which have provided the evidence of this change, there has been some investigation of prehistoric paleosols fossilized under principally Bronze Age archaeological monuments. These analyses identified brown earth soils that were originally associated with temperate deciduous woodland, on occasion showing evidence of human impacts such as tilling. However, the number of analyses of these paleosols has been limited. This study presents the first analysis of a series of pre‐podzol brown earth paleosols on Exmoor, UK, two of which are associated with colluvial soil erosion sediments before the formation of peat. This study indicates these paleosols are spatially extensive and have considerable potential to inform a more nuanced understanding of prehistoric human impacts on the upland environments of the early‐mid Holocene and assess human agency in driving ecosystem change
Infrared-Faint Radio Sources are at high redshifts
Context: Infrared-Faint Radio Sources (IFRS) are characterised by relatively
high radio flux densities and associated faint or even absent infrared and
optical counterparts. The resulting extremely high radio-to-infrared flux
density ratios up to several thousands were previously known only for
High-redshift Radio Galaxies (HzRGs), suggesting a link between the two classes
of object. Prior to this work, no redshift was known for any IFRS in the
Australia Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLAS) fields which would help to put
IFRS in the context of other classes of object, especially of HzRGs. Aims: This
work aims at measuring the first redshifts of IFRS in the ATLAS fields.
Further, we test the hypothesis that IFRS are similar to HzRGs, as
higher-redshift or dust-obscured versions of these massive galaxies. Methods: A
sample of IFRS was spectroscopically observed using the Focal Reducer and Low
Dispersion Spectrograph 2 (FORS2) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The data
were calibrated based on the Image Reduction and Analysis Facility (IRAF) and
redshifts extracted. This information was then used to calculate rest-frame
luminosities, and to perform the first spectral energy distribution modelling
of IFRS based on redshifts. Results: We found redshifts of 1.84, 2.13, and
2.76, for three IFRS, confirming the suggested high-redshift character of this
class of object. These redshifts as well as the resulting luminosities show
IFRS to be similar to HzRGs. We found further evidence that fainter IFRS are at
even higher redshifts. Conclusions: Considering the similarities between IFRS
and HzRGs substantiated in this work, the detection of IFRS, which have a
significantly higher sky density than HzRGs, increases the number of Active
Galactic Nuclei in the early universe and adds to the problems of explaining
the formation of supermassive black holes shortly after the Big Bang.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; version in prin
A trajectory approach to two-state kinetics of single particles on sculpted energy landscapes
We study the trajectories of a single colloidal particle as it hops between
two energy wells A and B, which are sculpted using adjacent optical traps by
controlling their respective power levels and separation. Whereas the dynamical
behaviors of such systems are often treated by master-equation methods that
focus on particles as actors, we analyze them here instead using a
trajectory-based variational method called Maximum Caliber, which utilizes a
dynamical partition function. We show that the Caliber strategy accurately
predicts the full dynamics that we observe in the experiments: from the
observed averages, it predicts second and third moments and covariances, with
no free parameters. The covariances are the dynamical equivalents of
Maxwell-like equilibrium reciprocal relations and Onsager-like dynamical
relations. In short, this work describes an experimental model system for
exploring full trajectory distributions in one-particle two-state systems, and
it validates the Caliber approach as a useful way to understand
trajectory-based dynamical distribution functions in this system.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letter
Changes over time in the relationship between weight, body fat, motivation, impulsivity and eating behaviour
Abstract Background University students are at a greater risk of gaining weight compared to others. We explored associations between changes in weight and a set of dispositional constructs related to eating behaviour: motivation, impulsivity, social comparison, and eating styles. We predicted that increases in controlled motivation, impulsivity, uncontrolled eating, emotional eating, and physical appearance comparison would be related to increased weight and body fat. Methods First year students at a British university completed baseline (n = 196) and three-month (n = 163) measures of impulsivity, physical appearance comparison, motivation for following a healthy diet, eating styles, weight and body fat. Baseline-follow-up changes in these constructs were computed and subjected to cluster analysis. Results Four participant groups were identified according to similarities in the way these constructs evolved over time. The Losing and Gaining groups tended to show opposing changes in key variables (physical appearance comparison, uncontrolled eating, motivation, weight, and percentage of body fat). Interestingly, two groups showed no change in weight and body fat but evidenced unique changes in key variables, indicating that individuals can have different psychological profiles but still maintain their weight. Conclusions The study highlighted how stable weight maintenance arises from sets of interdependent constructs rather than variables in isolation, as well as emphasizing a need to take a person-centred approach to examining those at risk of weight gain and in developing interventions
The effect of information channel on information source selection: students' information search
A plethora of research studies has examined the effect of information channel and information source on information search behavior respectively but scant research that examined them together is located. This study conducted a factorial repeated-measures ANOVA to examine the interaction effect between information channel and information source on students' internship information search behavior. Empirical findings indicated a significant interaction effect in students' information use. That is, how information is transmitted (information channel) is more influential than where information is from (information source) is in information use. Also, it was found that the selection of information channel and source is dependent on the type of internship in query. Internal working environment was found most important and external working environment was least important information in internship selection
The Rate of Osmotic Downshock Determines the Survival Probability of Bacterial Mechanosensitive Channel Mutants
Mechanosensitive (MS) channels allow cells to sense and respond to environmental changes. In bacteria, these channels are believed to protect against an osmotic shock. The physiological function of these channels has been characterized primarily by a standardized assay, where aliquots of batch-cultured cells are rapidly pipetted into a hypotonic medium. Under this method, it has been inferred many types of MS channels (MscS homologs in Escherichia coli) demonstrate limited effectiveness against shock, typically rescuing less than 10% of the cells when expressed at native levels. We introduce a single-cell-based assay which allows us to control how fast the osmolarity changes, over time scales ranging from a fraction of a second to several minutes. We find that the protection provided by MS channels depends strongly on the rate of osmotic change, revealing that, under a slow enough osmotic drop, MscS homologs can lead to survival rates comparable to those found in wild-type strains. Further, after the osmotic downshift, we observe multiple death phenotypes, which are inconsistent with the prevailing paradigm of how cells lyse. Both of these findings require a reevaluation of our basic understanding of the physiology of MS channels
Effects of long-term removal of sheep grazing on the seedbanks of high-level grasslands and blanket bogs
Many areas of vegetation in the British uplands have reduced species diversity as a result of sheep overgrazing. It has been suggested that abandonment or re-wilding strategies might be used to reverse this. A likely first step would be the removal or reduction of grazing livestock from upland areas, with a presumption that this would lead to a recovery in species richness. However, we do not know if this would work, or the timescales involved. One of the important areas where more knowledge is needed is information on the size and composition of soil seedbanks as regeneration from zseed is a likely pathway of recovery. Here, we compared seedbanks in both grazed and ungrazed plots in five experiments at Moor House NNR in the northern Pennines; these sheep grazing exclusion experiments were started 52 and 63/64 years ago. Soil samples (n=10) were collected from both grazed and ungrazed plots in each experiment, and seed emergence counted in glasshouse trials. We detected only seeds of common species and very few dicotyledonous species. This suggests that the soil seedbank is unlikely to be a reliable source of the less common species for ecological restoration in these upland communities, suggesting an extinction debt. Therefore, seed addition and the creation of suitable safe-sites for germination may be needed in conjunction with grazing controls to allow the establishment of plants that will increase the species richness of the vegetation. However, this interventionist restoration approach remains to be tested
