A new mathematical model for environmental monitoring and assessment

More in details we consider an environmental system distributed in landscape units (ecological sectors) and we propose a new mathematical model in order to implement a method for the evaluation of the ecological state of the system under investigation. After having performed a stability analysis of the model, we apply the proposed procedure first by considering separately each landscape unit and then extending our investigation to the system as a whole, by taking into account the connections between all the landscape units themselves. Sex-biased parental care and sexual size dimorphism in a provisioning arthropod
The diverse selection pressures driving the evolution of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) have long been debated. While the balance between fecundity selection and sexual selection has received much attention, explanations based on sex-specific ecology have proven harder to test. In ectotherms, females are typically larger than males, and this is frequently thought to be because size constrains female fecundity more than it constrains male mating success. However, SSD could additionally reflect maternal care strategies. Under this hypothesis, females are relatively larger where reproduction requires greater maximum maternal effort – for example where mothers transport heavy provisions to nests.
To test this hypothesis we focussed on digger wasps (Hymenoptera: Ammophilini), a relatively homogeneous group in which only females provision offspring. In some species, a single large prey item, up to 10 times the mother’s weight, must be carried to each burrow on foot; other species provide many small prey, each flown individually to the nest.
We found more pronounced female-biased SSD in species where females carry single, heavy prey. More generally, SSD was negatively correlated with numbers of prey provided per offspring. Females provisioning multiple small items had longer wings and thoraxes, probably because smaller prey are carried in flight.
Despite much theorising, few empirical studies have tested how sex-biased parental care can affect SSD. Our study reveals that such costs can be associated with the evolution of dimorphism, and this should be investigated in other clades where parental care costs differ between sexes and species
Consequentialism and Virtue
We examine the following consequentialist view of virtue: a trait is a virtue if and only if
it has good consequences in some relevant way. We highlight some motivations for this basic
account, and offer twelve choice points for filling it out. Next, we explicate Julia Driver’s
consequentialist view of virtue in reference to these choice points, and we canvass its merits and
demerits. Subsequently, we consider three suggestions that aim to increase the plausibility of her
position, and critically analyze them. We conclude that one of those proposed revisions would

Effectiveness of a structured educational intervention using psychological delivery methods in children and adolescents with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes: a cluster randomised controlled trial of the CASCADE intervention
Introduction: Type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents is increasing worldwide with a particular increase in children < 5 years. Fewer than one in six children and adolescents achieve recommended HbA1c values. Methods: A pragmatic, cluster randomised control trial assessed the efficacy of a clinic-based structured educational group incorporating psychological approaches to improve long-term glycaemic control, quality of life and psychosocial functioning in children and adolescents with T1D. 28 paediatric diabetes services were randomised to deliver the intervention or standard care. 362 children (8-16 years) HbA1c ≥ 8.5% were recruited. Outcomes were HbA1c at 12 and 24 months, hypoglycaemia, admissions, self-management skills, intervention compliance, emotional and behavioural adjustment and quality of life. A process evaluation collected data from key stakeholder groups in order to evaluate the feasibility of delivering the intervention. Results: 298/362 patients (82.3%) provided HbA1c at 12 months and 284/362 (78.5%) at 24 months. The intervention did not improve HbA1c at 12 months (intervention effect 0.11, 95% CI −0.28 to 0.50, P=0.584), or 24 months (intervention effect 0.03, 95% CI -0.36 to 0.41, P=0.891). There were no significant changes in remaining outcomes. 96/180 (53%) families in the intervention arm attended at least one module. The number of modules attended did not affect outcome. Reasons for low uptake included difficulties organising groups and work and school commitments. Those with highest HbA1cs were less likely to attend. Mean cost of the intervention was £683 per child. Conclusions: Significant challenges in the delivery of a structured education intervention using psychological techniques to enhance engagement and behaviour change delivered by diabetes nurses and dietitians in routine clinical practice were found. Inflammatory cytokines and biofilm production sustain Staphylococcus aureus outgrowth and persistence: A pivotal interplay in the pathogenesis of Atopic Dermatitis
Individuals with Atopic dermatitis (AD) are highly susceptible to Staphylococcus aureus colonization. However, the mechanisms driving this process as well as the impact of S. aureus in AD pathogenesis are still incompletely understood. In this study, we analysed the role of biofilm in sustaining S. aureus chronic persistence and its impact on AD severity. Further we explored whether key inflammatory cytokines overexpressed in AD might provide a selective advantage to S. aureus. Results show that the strength of biofilm production by S. aureus correlated with the severity of the skin lesion, being significantly higher (P < 0.01) in patients with a more severe form of the disease as compared to those individuals with mild AD. Additionally, interleukin (IL)-β and interferon γ (IFN-γ), but not interleukin (IL)-6, induced a concentration-dependent increase of S. aureus growth. This effect was not observed with coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from the skin of AD patients. These findings indicate that inflammatory cytokines such as IL1-β and IFN-γ, can selectively promote S. aureus outgrowth, thus subverting the composition of the healthy skin microbiome. Moreover, biofilm production by S. aureus plays a relevant role in further supporting chronic colonization and disease severity, while providing an increased tolerance to antimicrobials
Schwarzschild spacetime under generalised Gullstrand-Painlev\'e slicing
We investigate a foliation of Schwarzschild spacetime determined by observers
freely falling in the radial direction. This is described using a
generalisation of Gullstrand-Painlev\'e coordinates which allows for any
possible radial velocity. This foliation provides a contrast with the usual
static foliation implied by Schwarzschild coordinates. The -dimensional
spaces are distinct for the static and falling observers, so the embedding
diagrams, spatial measurement, simultaneity, and time at infinity are also
distinct, though the -dimensional spacetime is unchanged. Our motivation is
conceptual understanding, to counter Newton-like viewpoints. In future work,
this alternate foliation may shed light on open questions regarding quantum
fields, analogue gravity, entropy, energy, and other quantities. This article

Stationary Black Holes: Uniqueness and Beyond
The spectrum of known black-hole solutions to the stationary Einstein
equations has been steadily increasing, sometimes in unexpected ways. In
particular, it has turned out that not all black-hole-equilibrium
configurations are characterized by their mass, angular momentum and global
charges. Moreover, the high degree of symmetry displayed by vacuum and
electro-vacuum black-hole spacetimes ceases to exist in self-gravitating
non-linear field theories. This text aims to review some developments in the
subject and to discuss them in light of the uniqueness theorem for the

The Leverage of Demographic Dynamics on Carbon Dioxide Emissions: Does Age Structure Matter?
This article provides a methodological contribution to the study of the effect of changes in population age structure on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. First, I propose a generalization of the IPAT equation to a multisector economy with an age-structured population and discuss the insights that can be obtained in the context of stable population theory. Second, I suggest a statistical model of household consumption as a function of household size and age structure to quantitatively evaluate the extent of economies of scale in consumption of energy-intensive goods, and to estimate age-specific profiles of consumption of energy-intensive goods and of CO2 emissions. Third, I offer an illustration of the methodologies using data for the United States. The analysis shows that per-capita CO2 emissions increase with age until the individual is in his or her 60s, and then emissions tend to decrease. Holding everything else constant, the expected change in U.S. population age distribution during the next four decades is likely to have a small, but noticeable, positive impact on CO2 emissions

Using Network Dynamical Influence to Drive Consensus
Consensus and decision-making are often analysed in the context of networks, with many studies focusing attention on ranking the nodes of a network depending on their relative importance to information routing. Dynamical influence ranks the nodes with respect to their ability to influence the evolution of the associated network dynamical system. In this study it is shown that dynamical influence not only ranks the nodes, but also provides a naturally optimised distribution of effort to steer a network from one state to another. An example is provided where the "steering" refers to the physical change in velocity of self-propelled agents interacting through a network. Distinct from other works on this subject, this study looks at directed and hence more general graphs. The findings are presented with a theoretical angle, without targeting particular applications or networked systems; however, the framework and results offer parallels with biological flocks and swarms and opportunities for design of technological networks
