Exact factorization of the time-dependent electron-nuclear wavefunction
We present an exact decomposition of the complete wavefunction for a system
of nuclei and electrons evolving in a time-dependent external potential. We
derive formally exact equations for the nuclear and electronic wavefunctions
that lead to rigorous definitions of a time-dependent potential energy surface
(TDPES) and a time-dependent geometric phase. For the molecular ion
exposed to a laser field, the TDPES proves to be a useful interpretive tool to
identify different mechanisms of dissociation.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
QCD axion and quintessential axion
The axion solution of the strong CP problem is reviewed together with the
other strong CP solutions. We also point out the quintessential
axion(quintaxion) whose potential can be extremely flat due to the tiny ratio
of the hidden sector quark mass and the intermediate hidden sector scale. The
quintaxion candidates are supposed to be the string theory axions, the model
independent or the model dependent axions.Comment: 15 pages. Talk presented at Castle Ringberg, June 9-14, 200
Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Constraint on Scale of Minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model
Using an effective theory approach, we calculate the neutron electric dipole
moment (nEDM) in the minimal left-right symmetric model with both explicit and
spontaneous CP violations. We integrate out heavy particles to obtain
flavor-neutral CP-violating effective Lagrangian. We run the Wilson
coefficients from the electroweak scale to the hadronic scale using one-loop
renormalization group equations. Using the state-of-the-art hadronic matrix
elements, we obtain the nEDM as a function of right-handed W-boson mass and
CP-violating parameters. We use the current limit on nEDM combined with the
kaon-decay parameter to provide the most stringent constraint yet on
the left-right symmetric scale TeV.Comment: 20 pages and 8 figure
Interacting Spin-2 Fields
We construct consistent theories of multiple interacting spin-2 fields in
arbitrary spacetime dimensions using a vielbein formulation. We show that these
theories have the additional primary constraints needed to eliminate potential
ghosts, to all orders in the fields, and to all orders beyond any decoupling
limit. We postulate that the number of spin-2 fields interacting at a single
vertex is limited by the number of spacetime dimensions. We then show that, for
the case of two spin-2 fields, the vielbein theory is equivalent to the
recently proposed theories of ghost-free massive gravity and bi-metric gravity.
The vielbein formulation greatly simplifies the proof that these theories have
an extra primary constraint which eliminates the Boulware-Deser ghost.Comment: 42 pages, 3 figures. v3 alternative argument using constrained

Classical Effective Field Theory for Weak Ultra Relativistic Scattering
Inspired by the problem of Planckian scattering we describe a classical
effective field theory for weak ultra relativistic scattering in which field
propagation is instantaneous and transverse and the particles' equations of
motion localize to the instant of passing. An analogy with the non-relativistic
(post-Newtonian) approximation is stressed. The small parameter is identified
and power counting rules are established. The theory is applied to reproduce
the leading scattering angle for either a scalar interaction field or
electro-magnetic or gravitational; to compute some subleading corrections,
including the interaction duration; and to allow for non-zero masses. For the
gravitational case we present an appropriate decomposition of the gravitational
field onto the transverse plane together with its whole non-linear action. On
the way we touch upon the relation with the eikonal approximation, some
evidence for censorship of quantum gravity, and an algebraic ring structure on
2d Minkowski spacetime.Comment: 29 pages, 2 figures. v4: Duration of interaction is determined in Sec

Pure-glue hidden valleys through the Higgs portal
We consider the possibility that the Higgs boson can act as a link to a
hidden sector in the context of pure-glue hidden valley models. In these models
the standard model is weakly coupled, through loops of heavy messengers fields,
to a hidden sector whose low energy dynamics is described by a pure-Yang-Mills
theory. Such a hidden sector contains several metastable hidden glueballs. In
this work we shall extend earlier results on hidden valleys to include
couplings of the messengers to the standard model Higgs sector. The effective
interactions at one-loop couple the hidden gluons to the standard model
particles through the Higgs sector. These couplings in turn induce hidden
glueball decays to fermion pairs, or cascade decays with multiple Higgs
emission. The presence of effective operators of different mass dimensions,
often competing with each other, together with a great diversity of states,
leads to a great variability in the lifetimes and decay modes of the hidden
glueballs. We find that most of the operators considered in this paper are not
heavily constrained by precision electroweak physics, therefore leaving plenty
of room in the parameter space to be explored by the future experiments at the
LHC.Comment: 44 pages, 16 figures. Major revision for JHEP, corrected an error in

B-L Cosmic Strings in Heterotic Standard Models
E_{8} X E_{8} heterotic string and M-theory, when compactified on smooth
Calabi-Yau manifolds with SU(4) vector bundles, can give rise to softly broken
N=1 supersymmetric theories with the exact matter spectrum of the MSSM,
including three right-handed neutrinos and one Higgs-Higgs conjugate pair of
supermultiplets. These vacua have the SU(3)_{C} X SU(2)_{L} X U(1)_{Y} gauge
group of the standard model augmented by an additional gauged U(1)_{B-L}. Their
minimal content requires that the B-L symmetry be spontaneously broken by a
vacuum expectation value of at least one right-handed sneutrino. The soft
supersymmetry breaking operators can induce radiative breaking of the B-L gauge
symmetry with an acceptable B-L/electroweak hierarchy. In this paper, it is
shown that U(1)_{B-L} cosmic strings occur in this context, potentially with
both bosonic and fermionic superconductivity. We present a numerical analysis
that demonstrates that boson condensates can, in principle, form for theories
of this type. However, the weak Yukawa and gauge couplings of the right-handed
sneutrino suggests that bosonic superconductivity will not occur in the
simplest vacua in this context. The electroweak phase transition also disallows
fermion superconductivity, although substantial bound state fermion currents
can exist.Comment: 41 pages, 5 figure
Prenatal Exposure to Tetrachloroethylene-Contaminated Drinking Water and the Risk of Adverse Birth Outcomes
BACKGROUND. Prior studies of prenatal exposure to tetrachloroethylene (PCE) have shown mixed results regarding its effect on birth weight and gestational age. OBJECTIVES. In this retrospective cohort study we examined whether PCE contamination of public drinking-water supplies in Massachusetts influenced the birth weight and gestational duration of children whose mothers were exposed before the child's delivery. METHODS. The study included 1,353 children whose mothers were exposed to PCE-contaminated drinking water and a comparable group of 772 children of unexposed mothers. Birth records were used to identify subjects and provide information on the outcomes. Mothers completed a questionnaire to gather information on residential histories and confounding variables. PCE exposure was estimated using EPANET water distribution system modeling software that incorporated a fate and transport model. RESULTS. We found no meaningful associations between PCE exposure and birth weight or gestational duration. Compared with children whose mothers were unexposed during the year of the last menstrual period (LMP), adjusted mean differences in birth weight were 20.9, 6.2, 30.1, and 15.2 g for children whose mothers' average monthly exposure during the LMP year ranged from the lowest to highest quartile. Similarly, compared with unexposed children, adjusted mean differences in gestational age were -0.2, 0.1, -0.1, and -0.2 weeks for children whose mothers' average monthly exposure ranged from the lowest to highest quartile. Similar results were observed for two other measures of prenatal exposure. CONCLUSIONS. These results suggest that prenatal PCE exposure does not have an adverse effect on these birth outcomes at the exposure levels experienced by this population.National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (5 P42 ES007381
