    Indium mineralisation in SW England: Host parageneses and mineralogical relations

When the final article is assigned to volumes/issues of the publication, the Article in Press version will be removed replaced by the final version.The SW England ore region contains significant indium (In) in Early Permian granite-related skarn and lode parageneses and, to a lesser extent, Triassic epithermal “crosscourse” veins. Ore parageneses that predate granite emplacement (Devonian and Lower Carboniferous sedimentary exhalative and vein parageneses) are largely devoid of In. Cadmium (Cd) and gallium (Ga), in contrast, occur widely in all sulphide-bearing parageneses across the region with sphalerite concentrations locally reaching 1.74 wt% Cd and 1750 ppm Ga. Indium displays a strong affinity to sulphide-bearing magmatic-hydrothermal parageneses. It occurs in silicate-sulphide skarns, polymetallic sulphide lodes and sulphide-bearing portions of greisen-bordered sheeted vein systems and quartz-tourmaline lodes, veins and breccias across the region. Magnetite-silicate skarns and quartz-tourmaline lodes, veins and breccias that are devoid of sulphide, in contrast, were comparatively unfavourable for In precipitation. The highest In concentrations are found in mineral lodes associated with the Carnmenellis and St Agnes granites, which are the districts that had the highest historical production of Sn. Total In concentrations in these areas locally exceed 430 ppm, while concentrations elsewhere are systematically below 200 ppm. The principal In hosts are chalcopyrite, sphalerite and stannite group minerals with local concentrations within cassiterite and tennantite. No In was detected in löllingite, arsenopyrite, rutile, haematite, magnetite, tourmaline, biotite, chlorite, galena, bornite, chalcocite or pyrrhotite. Scattered concentrations in pyrite relate to impurities rather than incorporation by solid solution. Sphalerite locally contains up to 1.42 wt% In, chalcopyrite has up to 2200 ppm and stannite group minerals up to 6800 ppm. Although In concentrations are highest in sphalerite and stannite group minerals, chalcopyrite accounts for the majority of the In budget throughout most of the region. Roquesite and possibly dzhalindite or native In formed locally where In-bearing chalcopyrite or sphalerite have been replaced by bornite and quartz. The In partitioning between sphalerite and chalcopyrite varies broadly between 1:1 and 10:1. In the granite-related parageneses, the In deportment varies across the different parageneses, and this variation is systematically related to different sphalerite morphologies. Chalcopyrite contains most of the In budget within parageneses that have large, unzoned sphalerite grains with chalcopyrite disease or only sparse, minute grains of sphalerite. In contrast, zoned sphalerite without chalcopyrite disease carries the majority of the In budget in the evolved parts of the polymetallic sulphide lodes. Although chalcopyrite is also abundant here, it is much less significant as a host. Sporadic In was included in Triassic crosscourse veins as a result of interactions between migrating CaCl2-rich basinal brines and earlier formed granite-related parageneses. The interactions involved at least two distinct components: 1) Incorporation of clasts of magmatic-hydrothermal veins in crosscourse veins during faulting, and 2) Dissolution and re-precipitation of magmatic-hydrothermal vein minerals in crosscourse fluids. Local concentrations reach 140 ppm In. The region-wide dominance of chalcopyrite as an In host is unexpected and appears to be at variance with magmatic-hydrothermal parageneses elsewhere. This suggests that processing strategies that focus exclusively on sphalerite are likely to have little success. Detailed mineral deportment assessments must be a pre-requisite for the design of successful processing strategies in the region. Interestingly, we have no reason to believe that SW England is different to other regions with granite-related magmatic-hydrothermal parageneses, and it is possible that the global potential for In recovery from chalcopyrite has been underestimated. The magmatic-hydrothermal parageneses in SW England are comparable to the South China Tin Belt, Mount Pleasant, as well as Erzgebirge/Krušné Hory. Magmatic-hydrothermal fluids associated with peraluminous granites have developed a variety of skarn, greisen, lode and veins parageneses by interactions with their host rocks and contained fluids. Crosscourse epithermal mineralisation occurred as In was transported by CaCl2-rich basinal brines in a similar manner as In-bearing veins in the West Shropshire ore field

    Is thirty-seven years sufficient for full return of the ant biota following restoration?

    Introduction: An assessment of whether rehabilitated mine sites have resulted in natural or novel ecosystems requires monitoring over considerable periods of time or the use of space-for-time substitution (chronosequence) approaches. Methods: To provide an assessment of ecosystem recovery in areas mined for bauxite in 1975, the ant fauna of one area planted with Eucalyptus resinifera, one seeded with mixed native species, one topsoiled but unrestored, and a forest reference was subjected to a ‘long-term’ study by sampling monthly and latterly annually between 1976 and 1989 using pitfall traps. These plots were resampled in 2012. A companion ‘short-term’ chronosequence study was performed in 1979 in 28 bauxite mines of various ages and restored by a range of different methods, plus three forest references. In order to examine the assertion that the observed differences between restored areas and forest references will lessen with time, sampling using comparable methods was repeated in 2012 in seven of the original plots, representing progressive advances in rehabilitation technology: planted pines; planted eastern states eucalypts; planted native eucalypts; planted eucalypts over seeded understorey; and planted eucalypts on fresh, double-stripped topsoil, plus two forest reference sites. Results: Ant and other invertebrate richness in the long-term study was initially superior in the seeded plot, with little difference between the planted and unplanted plots. It was concluded that although composition of the ant fauna had converged on that of the forest over the 14-year period, differences still persisted.The 2012 resampling revealed that ant species richness and composition had deteriorated in the seeded plot, while values in the unplanted plot, which now supported naturally colonised trees and an understorey, had increased. Differences between all rehabilitated plots and forest still persisted. As with the long-term study, the rate of fauna return and the type of ants present in the short-term study plots differed with the method of rehabilitation used, and, in 1979, no plots had converged on the forest in terms of the ant assemblage. By 2012 ant richness increased, and more so with each advance in rehabilitation technology, except for seeding, in which the understorey had collapsed. Double-stripping of topsoil resulted in the greatest improvements in ant species richness, although none of the areas had converged on the forest reference areas in terms of assemblage composition or ant functional group profiles. Furthermore, assemblage composition in the forest had changed over time, possibly due to reductions in rainfall, which further complicates rehabilitation objectives. Conclusions: It is concluded that although rehabilitation can achieve its objective of restoring diversity, the original assemblage has still not been achieved after 37 years, suggesting that a degree of novelty has been introduced into these older-style rehabilitated areas. The company’s current rehabilitation practices reflect multiple advances in their approach, lending optimism that current restoration may achieve something close to the original ecosystem, an outcome that can only be verified by extended studies like the one described here

    Structure-based mutagenesis reveals the albumin-binding site of the neonatal Fc receptor

    Albumin is the most abundant protein in blood where it has a pivotal role as a transporter of fatty acids and drugs. Like IgG, albumin has long serum half-life, protected from degradation by pH-dependent recycling mediated by interaction with the neonatal Fc receptor, FcRn. Although the FcRn interaction with IgG is well characterized at the atomic level, its interaction with albumin is not. Here we present structure-based modelling of the FcRn–albumin complex, supported by binding analysis of site-specific mutants, providing mechanistic evidence for the presence of pH-sensitive ionic networks at the interaction interface. These networks involve conserved histidines in both FcRn and albumin domain III. Histidines also contribute to intramolecular interactions that stabilize the otherwise flexible loops at both the interacting surfaces. Molecular details of the FcRn–albumin complex may guide the development of novel albumin variants with altered serum half-life as carriers of drugs

    We have prepared and studied a family of cyanobiphenyl dimers with varying linking groups with a view to exploring how molecular structure dictates the stability of the nematic and twist-bend nematic mesophases. Using molecular modelling and 1D (1)H NOESY NMR spectroscopy, we determine the angle between the two aromatic core units for each dimer and find a strong dependency of the stability of both the nematic and twist-bend mesophases upon this angle, thereby satisfying earlier theoretical models

    The target of all adjuvant systemic therapies after surgery in breast cancer is the eradication of a minimal subclinical residual disease. Although it is well known that tumor cell dissemination takes place already at an early stage of the disease, little is known about the tumorbiological parameters of these residual cells. Selection of patients eligible for adjuvant endocrine therapies is based on the analysis of receptor expression in the primary tumor – although the analysis is directed against disseminated tumor cells, these cells may vary in receptor expression in comparison with the primary tumor

    Predicting live birth, preterm and low birth weight infant after in-vitro fertilisation: a prospective study of 144018 treatment cycles

    Background The extent to which baseline couple characteristics affect the probability of live birth and adverse perinatal outcomes after assisted conception is unknown. Methods and Findings We utilised the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority database to examine the predictors of live birth in all in vitro fertilisation (IVF) cycles undertaken in the UK between 2003 and 2007 (n = 144,018). We examined the potential clinical utility of a validated model that pre-dated the introduction of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) as compared to a novel model. For those treatment cycles that resulted in a live singleton birth (n = 24,226), we determined the associates of potential risk factors with preterm birth, low birth weight, and macrosomia. The overall rate of at least one live birth was 23.4 per 100 cycles (95% confidence interval [CI] 23.2–23.7). In multivariable models the odds of at least one live birth decreased with increasing maternal age, increasing duration of infertility, a greater number of previously unsuccessful IVF treatments, use of own oocytes, necessity for a second or third treatment cycle, or if it was not unexplained infertility. The association of own versus donor oocyte with reduced odds of live birth strengthened with increasing age of the mother. A previous IVF live birth increased the odds of future success (OR 1.58, 95% CI 1.46–1.71) more than that of a previous spontaneous live birth (OR 1.19, 95% CI 0.99–1.24); p-value for difference in estimate <0.001. Use of ICSI increased the odds of live birth, and male causes of infertility were associated with reduced odds of live birth only in couples who had not received ICSI. Prediction of live birth was feasible with moderate discrimination and excellent calibration; calibration was markedly improved in the novel compared to the established model. Preterm birth and low birth weight were increased if oocyte donation was required and ICSI was not used. Risk of macrosomia increased with advancing maternal age and a history of previous live births. Infertility due to cervical problems was associated with increased odds of all three outcomes—preterm birth, low birth weight, and macrosomia. Conclusions Pending external validation, our results show that couple- and treatment-specific factors can be used to provide infertile couples with an accurate assessment of whether they have low or high risk of a successful outcome following IVF

    Multi-state models and arthroplasty histories after unilateral total hip arthroplasties: Introducing the Summary Notation for Arthroplasty Histories

    Background and purpose: An increasing number of patients have several joint replacement procedures during their lifetime. We investigated the use and suitability of multi-state model techniques in providing a more comprehensive analysis and description of complex arthroplasty histories held in arthroplasty registries than are allowed for with traditional survival methods. Patients and methods: We obtained data from the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry on patients (n = 84,759) who had undergone a total hip arthroplasty for osteoarthritis in the period 2002–2008. We set up a multi-state model where patients were followed from their first recorded arthroplasty to several possible states: revision of first arthroplasty, either a hip or knee as second arthroplasty, revision of the second arthroplasty, and death. The Summary Notation for Arthroplasty Histories (SNAH) was developed in order to help to manage and analyze this type of data. Results: At the end of the study period, 12% of the 84,759 patients had received a second hip, 3 times as many as had received a knee. The estimated probabilities of having received a second arthroplasty decreased with age. Males had a lower transition rate for receiving a second arthroplasty, but a higher mortality rate. Interpretation: Multi-state models in combination with SNAH codes are well suited to the management and analysis of arthroplasty registry data on patients who experience multiple joint procedures over time.     A short-lived oxidation event during the early Ediacaran and delayed oxygenation of the Proterozoic ocean

    The Ediacaran Period was characterised by major carbon isotope perturbations. The most extreme of these, the ∼570 Ma Shuram/DOUNCE (Doushantuo Negative Carbon isotope Excursion) anomaly, coincided with early radiations of benthic macrofauna linked to a temporary expansion in the extent of oxygenated seawater. Here we document an earlier negative excursion (the ∼610 Ma WANCE (Weng'An Negative Carbon isotope Excursion)) anomaly in the Yangtze Gorges area, South China, that reached equally extreme carbon isotope values and was associated with a similar degree of environmental perturbation. Specifically, new uranium isotope data evidence a significant, but transient, shift towards more oxygenated conditions in tandem with decreasing carbon isotope values, while strontium and sulfur isotope data support an increase in continental weathering through the excursion. We utilize a biogeochemical modelling approach to demonstrate that the influx of such a weathering pulse into an organically-laden, largely anoxic ocean, fully reproduces each of these distinct isotopic trends. Our study directly supports the hypothesis that a large dissolved marine organic pool effectively buffered against widespread oxygenation of the marine environment through the Proterozoic Eon, and in doing so, substantially delayed the radiation of complex aerobic life on Earth

    Survey of the needs of patients with spinal cord injury: impact and priority for improvement in hand function in tetraplegics\ud

    Objective: To investigate the impact of upper extremity deficit in subjects with tetraplegia.\ud \ud Setting: The United Kingdom and The Netherlands.\ud \ud Study design: Survey among the members of the Dutch and UK Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Associations.\ud \ud Main outcome parameter: Indication of expected improvement in quality of life (QOL) on a 5-point scale in relation to improvement in hand function and seven other SCI-related impairments.\ud \ud Results: In all, 565 subjects with tetraplegia returned the questionnaire (overall response of 42%). Results in the Dutch and the UK group were comparable. A total of 77% of the tetraplegics expected an important or very important improvement in QOL if their hand function improved. This is comparable to their expectations with regard to improvement in bladder and bowel function. All other items were scored lower.\ud \ud Conclusion: This is the first study in which the impact of upper extremity impairment has been assessed in a large sample of tetraplegic subjects and compared to other SCI-related impairments that have a major impact on the life of subjects with SCI. The present study indicates a high impact as well as a high priority for improvement in hand function in tetraplegics.\ud \u
