HERMES Precision Results on g1p, g1d and g1n and the First Measurement of the Tensor Structure Function b1d

Final HERMES results on the proton, deuteron and neutron structure function g1 are presented in the kinematic range 0.0021<x<0.9 and 0.1<Q2<20 GeV2. These results base on a refined analysis and are corrected for radiative and detector smearing effects using an unfolding algorithm. Furthermore, preliminary results on the first measurement of the tensor asymmetry Azz and the tensor structure function b1d are presented.Comment: Proceedings for Spin 2004 conference (16th international spin physics symposium) in Trieste, Italy (October 10-16, 2004); 4 pages, 3 figure

Behavioral and Experimental Economics Can Inform Public Policy: Some Thoughts

    Get PDF
Experimental and behavioral economics are well established branches in the economic science. This essay presents and discusses some results and behavioral regularities from these fields which are of potential importance for public policy. After a brief introduction of what experimental and behavioral economics is, some behavioural regularities as presentation and framing effects, pro-social behavior, and reciprocity are introduced and it is reported how they interact with prominent trading institutions, taxation, and social and individual well-being. Throughout some implications for public policy are discussed.public economics, experimental economics, behavioral economics, public policy

Effective bounds on ampleness of cotangent bundles

We prove that a general complete intersection of dimension nn, codimension cc and type d1,…,dcd_1, \dots, d_c in PN\mathbb{P}^N has ample cotangent bundle if c≥2n−2c \geq 2n-2 and the did_i's are all greater than a bound that is O(1)O(1) in NN and quadratic in nn. This degree bound substantially improves the currently best-known super-exponential bound in NN by Deng, although our result does not address the case n≤c<2n−2n \leq c < 2n-2.Comment: Uses a result of Darondeau to improve the bound

Inhibitory antibodies designed for matrix metalloproteinase modulation

The family of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) consists of a set of biological targets that are involved in a multitude of severe pathogenic events such as different forms of cancers or arthritis. Modulation of the target class with small molecule drugs has not led to the anticipated success until present, as all clinical trials failed due to unacceptable side effects or a lack of therapeutic outcome. Monoclonal antibodies offer a tremendous therapeutic potential given their high target selectivity and good pharmacokinetic profiles. For the treatment of a variety of diseases there are already antibody therapies available and the number is increasing. Recently, several antibodies were developed for the selective inhibition of single MMPs that showed high potency and were therefore investigated in in vivo studies with promising results. In this review, we highlight the progress that has been achieved toward the design of inhibitory antibodies that successfully modulate MMP-9 and MMP-14
