Extremal transmission through a microwave photonic crystal and the observation of edge states in a rectangular Dirac billiard
This article presents experimental results on properties of waves propagating
in an unbounded and a bounded photonic crystal consisting of metallic cylinders
which are arranged in a triangular lattice. First, we present transmission
measurements of plane waves traversing a photonic crystal. The experiments are
performed in the vicinity of a Dirac point, i.e., an isolated conical
singularity of the photonic band structure. There, the transmission shows a
pseudodiffusive 1/L dependence, with being the thickness of the crystal, a
phenomenon also observed in graphene. Second, eigenmode intensity distributions
measured in a microwave analog of a relativistic Dirac billiard, a rectangular
microwave billiard that contains a photonic crystal, are discussed. Close to
the Dirac point states have been detected which are localized at the straight
edge of the photonic crystal corresponding to a zigzag edge in graphene

The microscopic origin of the recently observed helical structure in LiCu2O2
[1] is considered. It is shown that the frustrated antiferromagnetic double
chain scenario adopted in Ref.1 is unrealistic. It should be replaced by a
frustrated single-chain (CuO2) scenario proposed in Ref. 2 with ferromagnetic
nearest neighbor and antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor exchange integrals

Supersolidity, entropy and frustration
We study the properties of t-t'-V model of hard-core bosons on the triangular
lattice that can be realized in optical lattices. By mapping to the spin-1/2
XXZ model in a field, we determine the phase diagram of the t-V model where the
supersolid characterized by the ordering pattern (x,x,-2x') ("ferrimagnetic" or
SS A) is a ground state for chemical potential \mu >3V. By turning on either
temperature or t' at half-filling \mu =3V, we find a first order transition
from SS A to the elusive supersolid characterized by the (x,-x,0) ordering
pattern ("antiferromagnetic" or SS C). In addition, we find a large region
where a superfluid phase becomes a solid upon raising temperature at fixed
chemical potential. This is an analog of the Pomeranchuk effect driven by the
large entropic effects associated with geometric frustration on the triangular

Gross Job Flows in Ukraine: Size, Ownership and Trade Effects
This paper documents and analyses gross job flows and their determinants in Ukraine using a unique data set of more than 2200 Ukrainian firms operating in both the manufacturing and the non-manufacturing sector for the years 1998-2000. There are several important findings in the paper. Job destruction is dominating job creation in both 1999 and 2000. In connection with other evidence we infer from this that Ukraine is only at the beginning of the restructuring process. The most clear-cut result of our analysis is the strong positive effect of new private firms on net employment growth, a finding established for other transition economies as well. At the same time, we do not find differences in the employment growth of state-owned and privatised firms. Apart from ownership effects we also find, at the firm level, an inverse correlation of size and net employment growth and of size and job reallocation. Finally, we establish that strong foreign trade links force firms to shed labour more aggressively and to engage in more restructuring when trade is directed to and originating from Western economies. Semiclassical Theory of Chaotic Quantum Transport
We present a refined semiclassical approach to the Landauer conductance and
Kubo conductivity of clean chaotic mesoscopic systems. We demonstrate for
systems with uniformly hyperbolic dynamics that including off-diagonal
contributions to double sums over classical paths gives a weak-localization
correction in quantitative agreement with results from random matrix theory. We
further discuss the magnetic field dependence. This semiclassical treatment

Application of a trace formula to the spectra of flat three-dimensional dielectric resonators
The length spectra of flat three-dimensional dielectric resonators of
circular shape were determined from a microwave experiment. They were compared
to a semiclassical trace formula obtained within a two-dimensional model based
on the effective index of refraction approximation and a good agreement was
found. It was necessary to take into account the dispersion of the effective
index of refraction for the two-dimensional approximation. Furthermore, small
deviations between the experimental length spectrum and the trace formula
prediction were attributed to the systematic error of the effective index of
refraction approximation. In summary, the methods developed in this article
enable the application of the trace formula for two-dimensional dielectric
resonators also to realistic, flat three-dimensional dielectric microcavities
and -lasers, allowing for the interpretation of their spectra in terms of

Magnetocaloric effect in two-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnets
The magnetocaloric effect is studied at the transition to saturation in the
antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the simplest two-dimensional
lattices, namely the square and the triangular lattice. Numerical results are
presented for the entropy which are consistent with identical universal
properties. However, the absolute values of the entropy are bigger on the
geometrically frustrated triangular lattice than on the non-frustrated square

A comparison of soil moisture characteristics predicted by the Arya-Paris model with laboratory-measured data
Soil moisture characteristics predicted by the Arya-Paris model were compared with the laboratory measured data for 181 New Jersey soil horizons. For a number of soil horizons, the predicted and the measured moisture characteristic curves are almost coincident; for a large number of other horizons, despite some disparity, their shapes are strikingly similar. Uncertainties in the model input and laboratory measurement of the moisture characteristic are indicated, and recommendations for additional experimentation and testing are made
Experimental Observation of Localized Modes in a Dielectric Square Resonator
We investigated the frequency spectra and field distributions of a dielectric
square resonator in a microwave experiment. Since such systems cannot be
treated analytically, the experimental studies of their properties are
indispensable. The momentum representation of the measured field distributions
shows that all resonant modes are localized on specific classical tori of the
square billiard. Based on these observations a semiclassical model was
developed. It shows excellent agreement with all but a single class of measured
