Simulations of coronagraphy with a dynamic hologram for the direct detection of exo-planets

In a previous paper, we discussed an original solution to improve the performances of coronagraphs by adding, in the optical scheme, an adaptive hologram removing most of the residual speckle starlight. In our simulations, the detection limit in the flux ratio between a host star and a very near planet (5 lambda/D) improves over a factor 1000 (resp. 10000) when equipped with a hologram for cases of wavefront bumpiness imperfections of lambda/20 (resp. lambda/100). We derive, in this paper, the transmission accuracy required on the hologram pixels to achieve such goals. We show that preliminary tests could be performed on the basis of existing technologies.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

A Prediction Model for Energy Production in a Solar Concentrator Using Artificial Neural Networks

    Get PDF
Solar energy is widely adopted today and produced by photovoltaic or concentrator solar power (CSP). Photovoltaic technology is the most prevalent, thanks to its well-established technology and low costs. CSP technology, on the other hand, has received less attention and interest, as it requires larger investments and a considerable surface. A relevant difficulty connected to the CSP is decoupling solar randomness and energy production. This paper proposes an artificial neural network (ANN) which foresees energy production using a solar parabolic dish installed at Politecnico di Torino (Energy Center Lab). The investigation was performed using a backpropagation ANN. Different learning algorithms were used: Levenberg-Marquardt, Bayesian regularization, resilient backpropagation, and scaled conjugate gradient. Seven atmospheric condition parameters were adopted (humidity, temperature, pressure, wind velocity and direction, solar radiation, and rain), to calculate the receiver temperature as an output. Bayesian regularization was found to be the optimal model for CSP energy production. The results of this investigation suggest that the ANNs are a strong, reliable, and useful tool for predicting temperature in a CSP receiver that can be of great value in the forecasting of energy production. The outcome of this investigation can simplify energy production forecasting using readily available meteorological data

Unveiling spatial patterns of population in Italian municipalities

We study the evolution of population density across Italian municipalities on the based of their trajectories in the Moran space. We find evidence of spatial dynamical patterns of concentrated urban growth, urban sprawl, agglomeration, and depopulation. Over the long run, three distinct settlement systems emerge: urban, suburban, and rural. We discuss how estimating these demographic trends at the municipal level can help the design and validation of policies contrasting the socio-economic decline in specific Italian areas, as in the case of the Italian National Strategy for Inner Areas (Strategia Nazionale per le Aree Interne, SNAI).Comment: 29 page

Raman identification of cuneiform tablet pigments. Emphasis and colour technology in ancient Mesopotamian mid-third millennium

In the modern age, there is a large number of ways to manage a written text, from bolding or underlining some words with the preferred PC editing software down to animated gifs or emoticons for short edited text of mobile messaging and social posting. The task is to catch the eye and rapidly convey the important message. Besides the almost endless opportunities of high-tech displays, to put emphasis on a text written on a hard support mainly relies on changing the editing style, by applying bold, italic or underline style to selected words or phrases and exploiting the characteristic of human eye to be sensible to the change of brightness into a written text

Flux and color variations of the multiply imaged quasars HE0435 and UM673

We present photometric studies of the gravitationally lensed QSOs UM673 and HE0435. Concerning the doubly imaged quasar UM673, we are presently carrying out a preliminary analysis of the observations. Regarding the quadruply imaged quasar HE0435, the analysis is complete. The variations of this lensed quadruplet show that the source is intrinsically variable. Furthermore, one component is also very likely affected by microlensing. The significant color variations observed for the four lensed images are also consistent with variations produced by the source, and not by the lens. Our flux and color analysis are based upon different methods (image subtraction and PSF fitting) for studying the multi-band variability

Il Gruppo PSL(2,7) e una sua realizzazione come Gruppo di Galois

    Get PDF

A new water anomaly: the temperature dependence of the proton mean kinetic energy

The mean kinetic energy of protons in water is determined by Deep Inelastic Neutron Scattering experiments, performed above and below the temperature of maximum density and in the supercooled phase. The temperature dependence of this energy shows an anomalous behavior, as it occurs for many water properties. In particular two regions of maximum kinetic energy are identified: the first one, in the supercooled phase in the range 269 K - 272 K, and a second one above 273 K. In both these regions the measured proton kinetic energy exceedes the theoretical prediction based on a semi-classical model. Noteworthy, the proton mean kinetic energy has a maximum at 277 K, the temperature of the maximum density of water. In the supercooled metastable phase the measured mean kinetic energy and the proton momentum distribution clearly indicate proton delocalization between two H-bonded oxygens.Comment: 4 pages article 2 figure

Service Provisioning through Opportunistic Computing in Mobile Clouds

    Get PDF
Mobile clouds are a new paradigm enabling mobile users to access the heterogeneous services present in a pervasive mobile environment together with the rich service offers of the cloud infrastructures. In mobile computing environments mobile devices can also act as service providers, using approaches conceptually similar to service-oriented models. Many approaches implement service provisioning between mobile devices with the intervention of cloud-based handlers, with mobility playing a disruptive role to the functionality offered by of the system. In our approach, we exploit the opportunistic computing model, whereby mobile devices exploit direct contacts to provide services to each other, without necessarily go through conventional cloud services residing in the Internet. Conventional cloud services are therefore complemented by a mobile cloud formed directly by the mobile devices. This paper exploits an algorithm for service selection and composition in this type of mobile cloud environments able to estimate the execution time of a service composition. The model enables the system to produce an estimate of the execution time of the alternative compositions that can be exploited to solve a user's request and then choose the best one among them. We compare the performance of our algorithm with alternative strategies, showing its superior performance from a number of standpoints. In particular, we show how our algorithm can manage a higher load of requests without causing instability in the system conversely to the other strategies. When the load of requests is manageable for all strategies, our algorithm can achieve up to 75% less time spent in average to solve requests
