Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors: A Critical Look at the Antidepressants and an Assessment of Potential Liability Faced by their Manufacturers
Mental health is a growing and lucrative aspect of health-care. Among the ways of treating mental illness is through use of antidepressant medications, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This paper will address much of the critical commentary made about the SSRIs, and will consider whether the problems with this class of drugs could result in liability to the manufacturers. Included in the critique of the SSRIs is a look at whether SSRIs, including Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Luvox, and Celexa, are linked to violent or suicidal behavior. This paper will also consider the existence and effects of any withdrawal syndrome associated with these drugs. Finally, the paper will consider whether the drugs are over-prescribed, including a look at whether children should be prescribed SSRIs given that little FDA scrutiny has been given to the effects of these drugs on children

Assessment of Vessel Density on Non-Contrast Computed Tomography to Detect Basilar Artery Occlusion
Introduction: Basilar artery occlusion (BAO) may be clinically occult due to variable and non-specific symptomatology. We evaluated the qualitative and quantitative determination of a hyperdense basilar artery (HDBA) on non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) brain for the diagnosis of BAO.Methods: We conducted a case control study of patients with confirmed acute BAO vs a control group of suspected acute stroke patients without BAO. Two EM attending physicians, one third-year EM resident, and one medical student performed qualitative and quantitative assessments for the presence of a HDBA on axial NCCT images. Our primary outcome measures were sensitivity and specificity for BAO. Our secondary outcomes were inter-rater and intra-rater reliability of the qualitative and quantitative assessments.Results: We included 60 BAO and 65 control patients in our analysis. Qualitative assessment of the hyperdense basilar artery sign was poorly sensitive (54%â72%) and specific (55%â89%). Quantitative measurement improved the specificity of hyperdense basilar artery assessment for diagnosing BAO, with a threshold of 61.0â63.8 Hounsfield units demonstrating relatively high specificity of 85%â94%. There was moderate inter-rater agreement for the qualitative assessment of HDBA (Fleissâ kappa statistic 0.508, 95% confidence interval: 0.435â0.581). Agreement improved for quantitative assessments, but still fell in the moderate range (Shrout-Fleiss intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.635). Intra-rater reliability for the quantitative assessments of the two attending physician reviewers demonstrated substantial consistency.Conclusion: Our results highlight the importance of carefully examining basilar artery density when interpreting the NCCT of patients with altered consciousness or other signs and symptoms concerning for an acute basilar artery occlusion. If the Hounsfield unit density of the basilar artery exceeds 61 Hounsfield units, BAO should be highly suspected
Direct Immunosensor Design Based on the Electrochemical Reduction of 4-((4-Nitrophenyl) ethynyl) benzenethiol Monolayers
The synthesis and characterization of novel N-arylhydroxylamine-based molecular wires are described for use in the site-directed covalent immobilization of whole IgG antibodies onto gold electrode surfaces. The hydroxylamine, electrochemically generated in situ from reduction of the corresponding nitrobenzene, is stable under a wide range of solution conditions and reacts selectively with carbohydrate away from the antibody-binding site to allow the development of immunosensors with maximal activity. Cyclic voltammetric responses have shown a direct correlation between the structure and length of the molecular wire and its stability and concentration at the electrode surface
Educating Cancer Prevention Researchers in Emerging Biobehavioral Models: Lessons Learned
To increase the adoption of transdisciplinary research methods among future cancer prevention investigators, faculty members from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center developed a graduate-level course in biobehavioral methods in cancer prevention research. Two instructors paired by topic and area of expertise offered an hour-long lecture-based seminar every week for 15Â weeks during the spring semester of 2010. Students and presenters both evaluated the overall course content and delivery method, as well as each session. A total of 11 students and 22 presenters participated in the course. In each class session, one presenter was from a behavioral science background,and the other was from a biological sciences background. Both presenters and students expressed overall satisfaction with the content and format of the course. The presentation of topics from a transdisciplinary perspective and interaction with presenters from both biological and behavioral sciences are valuable and can help junior researchers prepare to meet the emerging challenges in cancer prevention research
A Framework to Support Interdisciplinary Engagement with Learning Analytics
Learning analytics can provide an excellent opportunity for instructors to get an in-depth understanding of studentsâ learning experiences in a course. However, certain technological challenges, namely limited availability of learning analytics data because of learning management system restrictions, can make accessing this data seem impossible at some institutions. Furthermore, even in cases where instructors have access to a range of student data, there may not be organized efforts to support students across various courses and university experiences. In the current chapter, the authors discuss the issue of learning analytics access and ways to leverage learning analytics data between instructors, and in some cases administrators, to create interdisciplinary opportunities for comprehensive student support. The authors consider the implications of these interactions for students, instructors, and administrators. Additionally, the authors focus on some of the technological infrastructure issues involved with accessing learning analytics and discuss the opportunities available for faculty and staff to take a multi-pronged approach to addressing overall student success.https://scholarworks.wm.edu/educationbookchapters/1045/thumbnail.jp
Integrating Entrepreneurship into the Design Classroom: Case Studies from the Developing World
© 2017, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC. Developing countries are more and more committed to building a knowledge-based economy as a means to diversify from their current resource-based economy. The current focus of many governments is on technology with real insights on creative economy and arts. In this context, universities are seen as a key partner of the government. This article presents the results of two innovative case studies of professors working in the College of Art and Design collaborating with a professor in the College of Business to integrate the concepts of entrepreneurship into their interior design courses. This was done through designing space for entrepreneurial projects and by the students acting as entrepreneurs themselves with an external client. This dual model of training combines (1) learning processes about the habits and the needs of entrepreneurs and (2) learning by acting as an entrepreneur. Such methods demonstrate the role of universities to provide a proper theoretical background for students and to foster entrepreneurial behaviors through arts entrepreneurship education. Furthermore, the central role of professors to introduce innovative teaching methods to combine entrepreneurship and the creative economy into non-business courses is an important finding in these case studies
Designing out Medical Error: An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Design of Healthcare Equipment
Medical error is an internationally recognised problem, with major financial and human costs (Gray; 2003, de Vries; et.al. 2008). The design of hospital equipment, devices and environments can contribute to the problem. Clinical staff often have to cope with confusing interfaces and equipment, making their tasks difficult and potentially dangerous.
There are calls to rethink the approach to design in healthcare. Design should acknowledge the real world issues users face in the hospital environment. A collaborative approach is required to understand these issues, (Karsh & Scanlon, 2007).
This paper outlines the methodologies used in two interdisciplinary case study projects, revealing the importance of a clear set of working methods and detailing the approach taken at each point. The resulting designs aim to better support healthcare processes, reducing the instance of medical error and ultimately saving lives
