The Digital Flynn Effect: Complexity of Posts on Social Media Increases over Time
Parents and teachers often express concern about the extensive use of social
media by youngsters. Some of them see emoticons, undecipherable initialisms and
loose grammar typical for social media as evidence of language degradation. In
this paper, we use a simple measure of text complexity to investigate how the
complexity of public posts on a popular social networking site changes over
time. We analyze a unique dataset that contains texts posted by 942, 336 users
from a large European city across nine years. We show that the chosen
complexity measure is correlated with the academic performance of users: users
from high-performing schools produce more complex texts than users from
low-performing schools. We also find that complexity of posts increases with
age. Finally, we demonstrate that overall language complexity of posts on the
social networking site is constantly increasing. We call this phenomenon the
digital Flynn effect. Our results may suggest that the worries about language
degradation are not warranted

A z = 3.045 Lyα emitting halo hosting a QSO and a possible candidate for AGN-triggered star formation
In this third paper in a series on the nature of extended, asymmetric Lyman
alpha emitters at z ~ 3 we report the discovery, in an ultra-deep, blind,
spectroscopic long-slit survey, of a Lyman alpha emitting halo around a QSO at
redshift 3.045. The QSO is a previously known, obscured AGN. The halo appears
extended along the direction of the slit and exhibits two faint patches
separated by 17 proper kpc in projection from the QSO. Comparison of the
2-dimensional spectrum with archival HST ACS images shows that these patches
coincide spatially with emission from a peculiar, dumbbell-shaped, faint
galaxy. The assumptions that the Lyman alpha emission patches are originating
in the galaxy and that the galaxy is physically related to the QSO are at
variance with photometric estimates of the galaxy redshift. We show, however,
that a population of very young stars at the redshift of the QSO may fit the
existing rest frame broad band UV photometry of the galaxy. If this scenario is
correct then the symmetry of the galaxy in continuum and Lyman alpha emission,
the extension of the QSO's Lyman alpha emission in its direction, and the
likely presence of a young stellar population in close proximity to a
(short-lived) AGN suggest that this may be an example of AGN feedback
triggering external star formation in high redshift galaxies
Coupled-cluster theory of a gas of strongly-interacting fermions in the dilute limit
We study the ground-state properties of a dilute gas of strongly-interacting
fermions in the framework of the coupled-cluster expansion (CCE). We
demonstrate that properties such as universality, opening of a gap in the
excitation spectrum and applicability of s-wave approximations appear naturally
in the CCE approach. In the zero-density limit, we show that the ground-state
energy density depends on only one parameter which in turn may depend at most
on the spatial dimensionality of the system.Comment: 7 figure
Double-Mode Stellar Pulsations
The status of the hydrodynamical modelling of nonlinear multi-mode stellar
pulsations is discussed. The hydrodynamical modelling of steady double-mode
(DM) pulsations has been a long-standing quest that is finally being concluded.
Recent progress has been made thanks to the introduction of turbulent
convection in the numerical hydrodynamical codes which provide detailed results
for individual models. An overview of the modal selection problem in the HR
diagram can be obtained in the form of bifurcation diagrams with the help of

The population of close double white dwarfs in the Galaxy
We present a new model for the Galactic population of close double white
dwarfs. The model accounts for the suggestion of the avoidance of a substantial
spiral-in during mass transfer between a giant and a main-sequence star of
comparable mass and for detailed cooling models. It agrees well with the
observations of the local sample of white dwarfs if the initial binary fraction
is close to 50% and an ad hoc assumption is made that white dwarfs with mass
less than about 0.3 solar mass cool faster than the models suggest. About 1000
white dwarfs brighter than V=15 have to be surveyed for detection of a pair
which has total mass greater than the Chandrasekhar mass and will merge within

PKSB1740-517: An ALMA view of the cold gas feeding a distant interacting young radio galaxy
Cold neutral gas is a key ingredient for growing the stellar and central
black hole mass in galaxies throughout cosmic history. We have used the Atacama
Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) to detect a rare example of redshifted
CO(2-1) absorption in PKS B1740-517, a young (
yr) and luminous ( erg s ) radio
galaxy at that is undergoing a tidal interaction with at least one
lower-mass companion. The coincident HI 21-cm and molecular absorption have
very similar line profiles and reveal a reservoir of cold gas ( M), likely distributed in a disc or ring within
a few kiloparsecs of the nucleus. A separate HI component is kinematically
distinct and has a very narrow line width ( km
s), consistent with a single diffuse cloud of cold (
K) atomic gas. The CO(2-1) absorption is not associated with this
component, which suggests that the cloud is either much smaller than 100 pc
along our sight-line and/or located in low-metallicity gas that was possibly
tidally stripped from the companion. We argue that the gas reservoir in PKS
B1740-517 may have accreted onto the host galaxy 50 Myr before the young
radio AGN was triggered, but has only recently reached the nucleus. This is
consistent with the paradigm that powerful luminous radio galaxies are
triggered by minor mergers and interactions with low-mass satellites and
represent a brief, possibly recurrent, active phase in the life cycle of

Friction and wear behavior of glasses and ceramics
Adhesion, friction, and wear behavior of glasses and ionic solids are reviewed. These materials are shown to behave in a manner similar to other solids with respect to adhesion. Their friction characteristics are shown to be sensitive to environmental constituents and surface films. This sensitivity can be related to a reduction in adhesive bonding and the changes in surficial mechanical behavior associated with Rehbinder and Joffe effects. Both friction and wear properties of ionic crystalline solids are highly anisotropic. With metals in contact with ionic solids the fracture strength of the ionic solid and the shear strength in the metal and those properties that determine these will dictate which of the materials undergoes adhesive wear. The chemical activity of the metal plays an important role in the nature and strength of the adhesive interfacial bond that develops between the metal and a glass or ionic solid
Elimination of Schistosomiasis Transmission in Zanzibar: Baseline Findings before the Onset of a Randomized Intervention Trial.
Gaining and sustaining control of schistosomiasis and, whenever feasible, achieving local elimination are the year 2020 targets set by the World Health Organization. In Zanzibar, various institutions and stakeholders have joined forces to eliminate urogenital schistosomiasis within 5 years. We report baseline findings before the onset of a randomized intervention trial designed to assess the differential impact of community-based praziquantel administration, snail control, and behavior change interventions. In early 2012, a baseline parasitological survey was conducted in ∼20,000 people from 90 communities in Unguja and Pemba. Risk factors for schistosomiasis were assessed by administering a questionnaire to adults. In selected communities, local knowledge about schistosomiasis transmission and prevention was determined in focus group discussions and in-depths interviews. Intermediate host snails were collected and examined for shedding of cercariae. The baseline Schistosoma haematobium prevalence in school children and adults was 4.3% (range: 0-19.7%) and 2.7% (range: 0-26.5%) in Unguja, and 8.9% (range: 0-31.8%) and 5.5% (range: 0-23.4%) in Pemba, respectively. Heavy infections were detected in 15.1% and 35.6% of the positive school children in Unguja and Pemba, respectively. Males were at higher risk than females (odds ratio (OR): 1.45; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03-2.03). Decreasing adult age (OR: 1.04; CI: 1.02-1.06), being born in Pemba (OR: 1.48; CI: 1.02-2.13) or Tanzania (OR: 2.36; CI: 1.16-4.78), and use of freshwater (OR: 2.15; CI: 1.53-3.03) showed higher odds of infection. Community knowledge about schistosomiasis was low. Only few infected Bulinus snails were found. The relatively low S. haematobium prevalence in Zanzibar is a promising starting point for elimination. However, there is a need to improve community knowledge about disease transmission and prevention. Control measures tailored to the local context, placing particular attention to hot-spot areas, high-risk groups, and individuals, will be necessary if elimination is to be achieved
