In situ study of the endotaxial growth of hexagonal CoSi2 nanoplatelets in Si(001)

    Get PDF
This investigation aims at studying-by in situ grazing-incidence small-angle x-ray scattering-the process of growth of hexagonal CoSi2 nanoplatelets endotaxially buried in a Si(001) wafer. The early formation of spherical Co nanoparticles with bimodal size distribution in the deposited silica thin film during a pretreatment at 500 °C and their subsequent growth at 700 °C were also characterized. Isothermal annealing at 700 °C promotes a drastic reduction in the number of the smallest Co nanoparticles and a continuous decrease in their volume fraction in the silica thin film. At the same time, Co atoms diffuse across the SiO2/Si(001) interface into the silicon wafer, react with Si, and build up thin hexagonal CoSi2 nanoplatelets, all of them with their main surfaces parallel to Si{111} crystallographic planes. The observed progressive growths in thickness and lateral size of the hexagonal CoSi2 nanoplatelets occur at the expense of the dissolution of the small Co nanoparticles that are formed during the pretreatment at 500 °C and become unstable at the annealing temperature (700 °C). The kinetics of growth of the volume fraction of hexagonal platelets is well described by the classical Avrami equation.Fil: Costa, Daniel Da Silva. Extraction of Aromatic Compounds from Their Mixtures with Alkanes: From Ternary to Quaternary (or Higher) Systems

    Get PDF
Ionic liquids have been proposed as separation agents for liquid extraction of aromatic compounds from their mixtures with alkanes, with the aim of improving the separation process and replacing conventional organic solvents. A significant number of experimental liquid-liquid equilibrium data for ternary system alkane + aromatic compound + ionic liquid can be found in literature; however there are few data for quaternary or higher systems involving more than one aliphatic compound, several aromatic compounds or a mixture of ionic liquids as separation agent. These data are also necessary because molecular interactions between the compounds in the mixture can modify the affinity of the solvent for the aromatic compound of interest. In this chapter we review the published data involving more than three components, and we present new liquid-liquid equilibrium data for the quaternary systems heptane + cyclohexane + toluene +1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide and heptane + cyclohexane + toluene + 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide

Cationic exchange in nanosized ZnFe2O4 spinel revealed by experimental and simulated near-edge absorption structure

The non-equilibrium cation site occupancy in nanosized zinc ferrites (6-13 nm) with different degree of inversion (0.2 to 0.4) was investigated using Fe and Zn K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy XANES and EXAFS, and magnetic measurements. The very good agreement between experimental and ab-initio calculations on the Zn K-edge XANES region clearly show the large Zn2+(A)--Zn2+[B] transference that takes place in addition to the well-identified Fe3+[B]--Fe3+(A) one, without altering the long-range structural order. XANES spectra features as a function of the spinel inversion were shown to depend on the configuration of the ligand shells surrounding the absorbing atom. This XANES approach provides a direct way to sense cationic inversion in these spinel compounds. We also demonstrated that a mechanical crystallization takes place on nanocrystalline spinel that causes an increase of both grain and magnetic sizes and, simultaneously, generates a significant augment of the inversion.Comment: 5 pages, 5 eps figures, uses revtex4, corrected table

Robust regression applied to fractal/multifractal analysis.

Fractal and multifractal are concepts that have grown increasingly popular in recent years in the soil analysis, along with the development of fractal models. One of the common steps is to calculate the slope of a linear fit commonly using least squares method. This shouldn?t be a special problem, however, in many situations using experimental data the researcher has to select the range of scales at which is going to work neglecting the rest of points to achieve the best linearity that in this type of analysis is necessary. Robust regression is a form of regression analysis designed to circumvent some limitations of traditional parametric and non-parametric methods. In this method we don?t have to assume that the outlier point is simply an extreme observation drawn from the tail of a normal distribution not compromising the validity of the regression results. In this work we have evaluated the capacity of robust regression to select the points in the experimental data used trying to avoid subjective choices. Based on this analysis we have developed a new work methodology that implies two basic steps: ? Evaluation of the improvement of linear fitting when consecutive points are eliminated based on R pvalue. In this way we consider the implications of reducing the number of points. ? Evaluation of the significance of slope difference between fitting with the two extremes points and fitted with the available points. We compare the results applying this methodology and the common used least squares one. The data selected for these comparisons are coming from experimental soil roughness transect and simulated based on middle point displacement method adding tendencies and noise. The results are discussed indicating the advantages and disadvantages of each methodology

XANES Study Of The Radiation Damage On Alkanethiolates-Capped Au Nanoparticles

The radiation damage during XANES experiments on alkanethiols capped gold nanoparticles has been investigated. Different carbon length chains and nanoparticle sizes have been studied. Changes in the spectra after 45 minutes of irradiation, using a bend magnet, were observed for chains with more than 6 carbon atoms and are associated with the cleavage of S-C bonds and formation of atomic sulphur on the nanoparticle surface.Fil: Ramallo Lopez, Jose Martin. Structure of Extremely Nanosized and Confined In-O Species in Ordered Porous Materials

Perturbed-angular correlation, x-ray absorption, and small-angle x-ray scattering spectroscopies were suitably combined to elucidate the local structure of highly diluted and dispersed InOx species confined in porous of ZSM5 zeolite. These novel approach allow us to determined the structure of extremely nanosized In-O species exchanged inside the 10-atom-ring channel of the zeolite, and to quantify the amount of In2O3 crystallites deposited onto the external zeolite surface.Comment: 4 pages, 5 postscript figures, REVTEX4, published in Physical Review Letter
