Paramagnetic anisotropic magnetoresistance in thin films of SrRuO3
SrRuO3 is an itinerant ferromagnet and in its thin film form when grown on
miscut SrTiO3 it has Tc of ~ 150 K and strong uniaxial anisotropy. We measured
both the Hall effect and the magnetoresistance (MR) of the films as a function
of the angle between the applied field and the normal to the films at
temperatures above Tc. We extracted the extraordinary Hall effect that is
proportional to the perpendicular component of the magnetization and thus the
MR for each angle of the applied field could be correlated with the magnitude
and orientation of the induced magnetization. We successfully fit the MR data
with a second order magnetization expansion, which indicates large anisotropic
MR in the paramagnetic state. The extremum values of resistivity are not
obtained for currents parallel or perpendicular to the magnetization, probably

Polymers pushing Polymers: Polymer Mixtures in Thermodynamic Equilibrium with a Pore
We investigate polymer partitioning from polymer mixtures into nanometer size
cavities by formulating an equation of state for a binary polymer mixture
assuming that only one (smaller) of the two polymer components can penetrate
the cavity. Deriving the partitioning equilibrium equations and solving them
numerically allows us to introduce the concept of "polymers-pushing-polymers"
for the action of non-penetrating polymers on the partitioning of the
penetrating polymers. Polymer partitioning into a pore even within a very
simple model of a binary polymer mixture is shown to depend in a complicated
way on the composition of the polymer mixture and/or the pore-penetration
penalty. This can lead to enhanced as well as diminished partitioning, due to

Mehanizam toksičnosti i detoksikacije organofosfornih spojeva s naglaskom na istraživanja u Hrvatskoj
This review comprises studies on the mechanisms of toxicity and detoxication of organophosphorus (OP) compounds done in Croatia in different research areas. One area is the synthesis of antidotes against OP poisoning and their in vivo testing in experimental animals. In vitro studies included in this review focus on the mechanisms of reversible inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), protection of cholinesterases from inhibition by OPs, and reactivation of phosphylated cholinesterases. The third area comprises distribution profiles of BChE and paraoxonase (PON) phenotypes in selected population groups and the detection of OPs and metabolites in humans. Finally, methods are described for the detection of OP compounds in human blood and other media by means of cholinesterase inhibitionPrikazana su istraživanja vođena u Hrvatskoj na različitim područjima mehanizma toksičnosti i detoksikacije organofosfornih (OP) spojeva. Jedno je područje sinteza antidota protiv otrovanja OP spojevima i testiranje in vivo antidota na eksperimentalnim životinjama. Noncommutative probability, matrix models, and quantum orbifold geometry
Inspired by the intimate relationship between Voiculescu's noncommutative
probability theory (of type A) and large-N matrix models in physics, we look
for physical models related to noncommutative probability theory of type B.
These turn out to be fermionic matrix-vector models at the double large-N
limit. In the context of string theory, they describe different orbifolded
string worldsheets with boundaries. Their critical exponents coincide with that
of ordinary string worldsheets, but their renormalised tree-level one-boundary

Recent developments of the Hierarchical Reference Theory of Fluids and its relation to the Renormalization Group
The Hierarchical Reference Theory (HRT) of fluids is a general framework for
the description of phase transitions in microscopic models of classical and
quantum statistical physics. The foundations of HRT are briefly reviewed in a
self-consistent formulation which includes both the original sharp cut-off
procedure and the smooth cut-off implementation, which has been recently
investigated. The critical properties of HRT are summarized, together with the
behavior of the theory at first order phase transitions. However, the emphasis
of this presentation is on the close relationship between HRT and non
perturbative renormalization group methods, as well as on recent
generalizations of HRT to microscopic models of interest in soft matter and

Using conceptual metaphor and functional grammar to explore how language used in physics affects student learning
This paper introduces a theory about the role of language in learning
physics. The theory is developed in the context of physics students' and
physicists' talking and writing about the subject of quantum mechanics. We
found that physicists' language encodes different varieties of analogical
models through the use of grammar and conceptual metaphor. We hypothesize that
students categorize concepts into ontological categories based on the
grammatical structure of physicists' language. We also hypothesize that
students over-extend and misapply conceptual metaphors in physicists' speech
and writing. Using our theory, we will show how, in some cases, we can explain

Learning physics in context: a study of student learning about electricity and magnetism
This paper re-centres the discussion of student learning in physics to focus
on context. In order to do so, a theoretically-motivated understanding of
context is developed. Given a well-defined notion of context, data from a novel
university class in electricity and magnetism are analyzed to demonstrate the
central and inextricable role of context in student learning. This work sits

Global generalized solutions for Maxwell-alpha and Euler-alpha equations
We study initial-boundary value problems for the Lagrangian averaged alpha
models for the equations of motion for the corotational Maxwell and inviscid
fluids in 2D and 3D. We show existence of (global in time) dissipative
solutions to these problems. We also discuss the idea of dissipative solution
