    On the steady states of the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system

    Using both numerical and analytical tools we study various features of static, spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov system. In particular, we investigate the possible shapes of their mass-energy density and find that they can be multi-peaked, we give numerical evidence and a partial proof for the conjecture that the Buchdahl inequality supr>02m(r)/r<8/9\sup_{r > 0} 2 m(r)/r < 8/9, m(r)m(r) the quasi-local mass, holds for all such steady states--both isotropic {\em and} anisotropic--, and we give numerical evidence and a partial proof for the conjecture that for any given microscopic equation of state--both isotropic {\em and} anisotropic--the resulting one-parameter family of static solutions generates a spiral in the radius-mass diagram.Comment: 34 pages, 18 figures, LaTe

    Global existence and future asymptotic behaviour for solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov-scalar field system with surface symmetry

    We prove in the cases of plane and hyperbolic symmetries a global in time existence result in the future for comological solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov-scalar field system, with the sources generated by a distribution function and a scalar field, subject to the Vlasov and wave equations respectively. The spacetime is future geodesically complete in the special case of plane symmetry with only a scalar field. Causal geodesics are also shown to be future complete for homogeneous solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov-scalar field system with plane and hyperbolic symmetry.Comment: 14 page

    Static cylindrically symmetric spacetimes

    We prove existence of static solutions to the cylindrically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system, and we show that the matter cylinder has finite extension. The same results are also proved for a quite general class of equations of state for perfect fluids coupled to the Einstein equations, extending the class of equations of state considered in \cite{BL}.     WroNG -- Wroclaw Neutrino Generator of events for single pion production

    We constructed a new Monte Carlo generator of events for neutrino CC single pion production on free nucleon targets. The code uses dynamical models of the DIS with the PDFs modified according to the recent JLab data and of the Delta excitation.     Describing general cosmological singularities in Iwasawa variables

    Belinskii, Khalatnikov, and Lifshitz (BKL) conjectured that the description of the asymptotic behavior of a generic solution of Einstein equations near a spacelike singularity could be drastically simplified by considering that the time derivatives of the metric asymptotically dominate (except at a sequence of instants, in the `chaotic case') over the spatial derivatives. We present a precise formulation of the BKL conjecture (in the chaotic case) that consists of basically three elements: (i) we parametrize the spatial metric gijg_{ij} by means of \it{Iwasawa variables} βa,Nai\beta^a, {\cal N}^a{}_i); (ii) we define, at each spatial point, a (chaotic) \it{asymptotic evolution system} made of ordinary differential equations for the Iwasawa variables; and (iii) we characterize the exact Einstein solutions β,N\beta, {\cal{N}} whose asymptotic behavior is described by a solution β[0],N[0]\beta_{[0]}, {\cal N}_{[0]} of the previous evolution system by means of a `\it{generalized Fuchsian system}' for the differenced variables βˉ=ββ[0]\bar \beta = \beta - \beta_{[0]}, Nˉ=NN[0]\bar {\cal N} = {\cal N} - {\cal N}_{[0]}, and by requiring that βˉ\bar \beta and Nˉ\bar {\cal N} tend to zero on the singularity. We also show that, in spite of the apparently chaotic infinite succession of `Kasner epochs' near the singularity, there exists a well-defined \it{asymptotic geometrical structure} on the singularity : it is described by a \it{partially framed flag}. Our treatment encompasses Einstein-matter systems (comprising scalar and p-forms), and also shows how the use of Iwasawa variables can simplify the usual (`asymptotically velocity term dominated') description of non-chaotic systems.Comment: 50 pages, 4 figure

    Comparison of predictions for nuclear effects in the Marteau model with the NUX+FLUKA scheme

    Nuclear effects in neutrino-nucleus reactions simulated by means of the NUX+FLUKA Monte Carlo generator are compared with the theoretical predictions of the Marteau model. Pion absorption in NUX+FLUKA and non-pionic Delta decays in the Marteau model differ by about 30%. The fraction of pions produced due to the re-interactions after primary quasi-elastic vertex is in the NUX+FLUKA scheme much higher then provided by the Marteau model.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, Presented by J.A.     The Virtual Insect Brain protocol: creating and comparing standardized neuroanatomy

    BACKGROUND: In the fly Drosophila melanogaster, new genetic, physiological, molecular and behavioral techniques for the functional analysis of the brain are rapidly accumulating. These diverse investigations on the function of the insect brain use gene expression patterns that can be visualized and provide the means for manipulating groups of neurons as a common ground. To take advantage of these patterns one needs to know their typical anatomy. RESULTS: This paper describes the Virtual Insect Brain (VIB) protocol, a script suite for the quantitative assessment, comparison, and presentation of neuroanatomical data. It is based on the 3D-reconstruction and visualization software Amira, version 3.x (Mercury Inc.) [1]. Besides its backbone, a standardization procedure which aligns individual 3D images (series of virtual sections obtained by confocal microscopy) to a common coordinate system and computes average intensities for each voxel (volume pixel) the VIB protocol provides an elaborate data management system for data administration. The VIB protocol facilitates direct comparison of gene expression patterns and describes their interindividual variability. It provides volumetry of brain regions and helps to characterize the phenotypes of brain structure mutants. Using the VIB protocol does not require any programming skills since all operations are carried out at an intuitively usable graphical user interface. Although the VIB protocol has been developed for the standardization of Drosophila neuroanatomy, the program structure can be used for the standardization of other 3D structures as well. CONCLUSION: Standardizing brains and gene expression patterns is a new approach to biological shape and its variability.     Resonance production by neutrinos: I. J=3/2 Resonances

    The article contains general formulas for the production of J=3/2 resonances by neutrinos and antineutrinos. It specializes to the P_{33}(1232) resonance whose form factors are determined by theory and experiment and then are compared with experimental results at low and high energies. It is shown that the minimum in the low Q^2 region is a consequence of a combined effect from the vanishing of the vector form factors, the muon mass and Pauli blocking.
