A low-cost soil sieving machine is presented. It was developed at the "Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Hortaliças" of EMBRAPA, for use in head houses attached to greenhouse complexes. On average, it takes 50 seconds to sieve 0.054 m3 of soil. Price, as of April/85, is estimated at US$400.É apresentada peneira mecânica simples e de baixo custo de construção e operação, desenvolvida para ser utilizada em casas de apoio a telados e a casas-de-vegetação. O desempenho médio de peneiramento dos diversos materiais avaliados foi de 0,054 m3 em 50 segundos. O custo de construção, em abril de 1985, foi estimado em 53 ORTNs (valor da ORTN em abril/1985: Cr$ 34.166,77)

Washing machine for plastic pots for research use

Descreve-se uma máquina de baixo custo e de simples montagem para lavagem de vasos de plástico, que lava de três a doze vasos/minuto, dependendo do tamanho do vaso. O uso básico da lavadora é em casas de vegetação. O custo, em maio de 1983, foi estimado em Cr $45.000,00.An inexpensive and easily assembled plastic pot washing machine, wich can wash from three to twelve pots/ minute, depending on pot size, is described. Em diversos países, o mosaico do pimentão (&lt;em&gt;Capsicum&lt;/em&gt; &lt;em&gt;annuun&lt;/em&gt; L.) é enfermidade importante (LANGE &amp; HAMMI, 1977; WIJS, 1980; NAGAI, 1984) e em algumas localidades foi considerado o problema mais sério da cultura (LOCKHART &amp; FISCHER, 1974). Dentre as bacterioses que afetam o pimentão, a que mais se destaca é a pústula bacteriana (KIMURA, 1984). Também a requeima ou murcha é problema em diversas regiões produtoras (KIMBLE &amp; GROGANK 1960; BAZAN DE SEGURA, 1962; MATTA &amp; GARIBALDI, 1972; ERHAD &amp; HILLE, 1975; MATSUOKA ei alii, 1984). Essa revisão pretende abordar cada uma destas doenças, abrangendo aspectos desde sintomatologia até controle, de utilidade na elaboração de projetos de pesquisa que visem ao controle por resistência genética.&lt;/p&gt

Crop domestication in the upper Madeira River basin

Most native Amazonian crops were domesticated in the periphery of the basin. The upper Madeira River basin is an important part of this periphery where several important crops were domesticated and others are suspected to have been domesticated or arrived early. Some of these crops have been reasonably well studied, such as manioc, peanut, peach palm, coca and tobacco, while others are not as well known, such as the hot peppers Capsicum baccatum and C. frutescens, and still others need confirmation, such as cocoyam and annatto. We review the information available for manioc, peach palm, Capsicum, peanut, annatto and cocoyam. The state-of-the-art for Capsicum frutescens, annatto and cocoyam is insufficient to conclude definitively that they were domesticated in the upper Madeira, while all the others have at least one of their origins or centers of diversity in the upper Madeira
