    Unification of Radio Galaxies and Their Accretion/Jet Properties

    We investigate the relation between black hole mass, M_bh, and jet power, Q_jet, for a sample of BL Lacs and radio quasars. We find that BL Lacs are separated from radio quasars by the FR I/II dividing line in M_bh-Q_jet plane, which strongly supports the unification scheme of FR I/BL Lac and FR II/radio quasar. The Eddington ratio distribution of BL Lacs and radio quasars exhibits a bimodal nature with a rough division at L_bol/L_Edd~0.01, which imply that they may have different accretion modes. We calculate the jet power extracted from advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF), and find that it require dimensionless angular momentum of black hole j~0.9-0.99 to reproduce the dividing line between FR I/II or BL Lac/radio quasar if dimensionless accretion rate mdot=0.01 is adopted, which is required by above bimodal distribution of Eddington ratios.     Understanding vehicular routing behavior with location-based service data

    This is the final published version, also available from Springer Nature via the DOI in this record.Properly extracting patterns of individual mobility with high resolution data sources such as the one extracted from smartphone applications offers important opportunities. Potential opportunities not offered by call detailed records (CDRs), which offer resolutions triangulated from antennas, are route choices, travel modes detection and close encounters. Nowadays, there is not a standard and large scale data set collected over long periods that allows us to characterize these. In this work we thoroughly examine the use of data from smartphone applications, also referred to as location-based services (LBS) data, to extract and understand the vehicular route choice behavior. Taking the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex as an example, we first extract the vehicular trips with simple rules and reconstruct the origin-destination matrix by coupling the extracted vehicular trips of the active LBS users and the United States census data. We then present a method to derive the commonly used routes by individuals from the LBS traces with varying sample rate intervals. We further inspect the relation between the number of routes and the trip characteristics, including the departure time, trip length and travel time. Specifically, we consider the travel time index and buffer index for the LBS users taking different number of routes. Empirical results demonstrate that during the peak hours, travelers tend to reduce the impact of traffic congestion by taking alternative routes. Overall, the proposed data analysis framework is cost-effective to treat sparse data generated from the use of smartphones to inform routing behavior.     Neural Network Parameterizations of Electromagnetic Nucleon Form Factors

    The electromagnetic nucleon form-factors data are studied with artificial feed forward neural networks. As a result the unbiased model-independent form-factor parametrizations are evaluated together with uncertainties. The Bayesian approach for the neural networks is adapted for chi2 error-like function and applied to the data analysis. The sequence of the feed forward neural networks with one hidden layer of units is considered. The given neural network represents a particular form-factor parametrization. The so-called evidence (the measure of how much the data favor given statistical model) is computed with the Bayesian framework and it is used to determine the best form factor parametrization.Comment: The revised version is divided into 4 sections.     Sensorless speed control of five-phase PMSM drives with low current distortion

    This paper introduces a design for a sensorless control of a five-phase PMSM drive working at low and zero speeds with low current distortion. The rotor position is obtained through tracking the saturation saliency by measuring the dynamic currents responses of the motor due to the IGBTs switching actions. It uses the fundamental PWM waveform obtained using the multi-phase space vector pulse width modulation only. The saliency tracking algorithm used in this paper doesn’t only improve the quality of the estimated position signals but also guarantees a minimum current distortion through reducing the modifications introduced on the PWM waveform. Simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy for saliency tracking and current distortion minimizing of a five-phase PMSM motor drive over a wide speed ranges under different load conditions

    A magnetically collimated jet from an evolved star

    Planetary nebulae often have asymmetric shapes, which could arise due to collimated jets from evolved stars before evolution to the planetary nebula phase. The source of jet collimation in these stars is unknown. Magnetic fields are thought to collimate outflows that are observed in many other astrophysical sources, such as active galactic nuclei and proto-stars, although hitherto there are no direct observations of both the magnetic field direction and strength in any collimated jet. Theoretical models have shown that magnetic fields could also be the dominant source of collimation of jet in evolved stars. Here we report measurements of the polarization of water vapour masers that trace the precessing jet emanating from the asymptotic giant branch star W43A at 2.6 kpc from the Sun, which is undergoing rapid evolution into a planetary nebula. The masers occur in two clusters at opposing tips of the jets, ~1,000 AU from the star. We find direct evidence that the magnetic field is collimating the jet.Comment: Published in Nature 440 (March 2nd 2006).     The space group classification of topological band insulators

    Topological band insulators (TBIs) are bulk insulating materials which feature topologically protected metallic states on their boundary. The existing classification departs from time-reversal symmetry, but the role of the crystal lattice symmetries in the physics of these topological states remained elusive. Here we provide the classification of TBIs protected not only by time-reversal, but also by crystalline symmetries. We find three broad classes of topological states: (a) Gamma-states robust against general time-reversal invariant perturbations; (b) Translationally-active states protected from elastic scattering, but susceptible to topological crystalline disorder; (c) Valley topological insulators sensitive to the effects of non-topological and crystalline disorder. These three classes give rise to 18 different two-dimensional, and, at least 70 three-dimensional TBIs, opening up a route for the systematic search for new types of TBIs.Comment: Accepted in Nature Physic

    P-odd and CP-odd Four-Quark Contributions to Neutron EDM

    In a class of beyond-standard-model theories, CP-odd observables, such as the neutron electric dipole moment, receive significant contributions from flavor-neutral P-odd and CP-odd four-quark operators. However, considerable uncertainties exist in the hadronic matrix elements of these operators strongly affecting the experimental constraints on CP-violating parameters in the theories. Here we study their hadronic matrix elements in combined chiral perturbation theory and nucleon models. We first classify the operators in chiral representations and present the leading-order QCD evolutions. We then match the four-quark operators to the corresponding ones in chiral hadronic theory, finding symmetry relations among the matrix elements. Although this makes lattice QCD calculations feasible, we choose to estimate the non-perturbative matching coefficients in simple quark models. We finally compare the results for the neutron electric dipole moment and P-odd and CP-odd pion-nucleon couplings with the previous studies using naive factorization and QCD sum rules. Our study shall provide valuable insights on the present hadronic physics uncertainties in these observables.Comment: 40 pages, 7 figures. This is the final version.
