Translation and manipulation of silicon nanomembranes using holographic optical tweezers
We demonstrate the use of holographic optical tweezers for trapping and manipulating silicon nanomembranes. These macroscopic free-standing sheets of single-crystalline silicon are attractive for use in next-generation flexible electronics. We achieve three-dimensional control by attaching a functionalized silica bead to the silicon surface, enabling non-contact trapping and manipulation of planar structures with high aspect ratios (high lateral size to thickness). Using as few as one trap and trapping powers as low as several hundred milliwatts, silicon nanomembranes can be rotated and translated in a solution over large distances
Logarithmic correction to BH entropy as Noether charge
We consider the role of the type-A trace anomaly in static black hole
solutions to semiclassical Einstein equation in four dimensions. Via Wald's
Noether charge formalism, we compute the contribution to the entropy coming
from the anomaly induced effective action and unveil a logarithmic correction
to the Bekenstein-Hawking area law.
The corrected entropy is given by a seemingly universal formula involving the
coefficient of the type-A trace anomaly, the Euler characteristic of the
horizon and the value at the horizon of the solution to the uniformization
problem for Q-curvature. Two instances are examined in detail: Schwarzschild
and a four-dimensional massless topological black hole. We also find agreement
with the logarithmic correction due to one-loop contribution of conformal

Lifting defects for nonstable K_0-theory of exchange rings and C*-algebras
The assignment (nonstable K_0-theory), that to a ring R associates the monoid
V(R) of Murray-von Neumann equivalence classes of idempotent infinite matrices
with only finitely nonzero entries over R, extends naturally to a functor. We
prove the following lifting properties of that functor: (1) There is no functor
F, from simplicial monoids with order-unit with normalized positive
homomorphisms to exchange rings, such that VF is equivalent to the identity.
(2) There is no functor F, from simplicial monoids with order-unit with
normalized positive embeddings to C*-algebras of real rank 0 (resp., von
Neumann regular rings), such that VF is equivalent to the identity. (3) There
is a {0,1}^3-indexed commutative diagram D of simplicial monoids that can be
lifted, with respect to the functor V, by exchange rings and by C*-algebras of
real rank 1, but not by semiprimitive exchange rings, thus neither by regular
rings nor by C*-algebras of real rank 0. By using categorical tools from an
earlier paper (larders, lifters, CLL), we deduce that there exists a unital
exchange ring of cardinality aleph three (resp., an aleph three-separable
unital C*-algebra of real rank 1) R, with stable rank 1 and index of nilpotence
2, such that V(R) is the positive cone of a dimension group and V(R) is not
isomorphic to V(B) for any ring B which is either a C*-algebra of real rank 0

Rotating black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta in d=5 Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory
We construct rotating black hole solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in
five spacetime dimensions. These black holes are asymptotically flat, and
possess a regular horizon of spherical topology and two equal-magnitude angular
momenta associated with two distinct planes of rotation. The action and global
charges of the solutions are obtained by using the quasilocal formalism with
boundary counterterms generalized for the case of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory.
We discuss the general properties of these black holes and study their
dependence on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant . We argue that most
of the properties of the configurations are not affected by the higher
derivative terms. For fixed the set of black hole solutions terminates
at an extremal black hole with a regular horizon, where the Hawking temperature
vanishes and the angular momenta attain their extremal values. The domain of
existence of regular black hole solutions is studied. The near horizon geometry
of the extremal solutions is determined by employing the entropy function

Shaping black holes with free fields
Starting from a metric Ansatz permitting a weak version of Birkhoff's theorem
we find static black hole solutions including matter in the form of free scalar
and p-form fields, with and without a cosmological constant \Lambda. Single
p-form matter fields permit multiple possibilities, including dyonic solutions,
self-dual instantons and metrics with Einstein-Kaelher horizons. The inclusion
of multiple p-forms on the other hand, arranged in a homogeneous fashion with
respect to the horizon geometry, permits the construction of higher dimensional
dyonic p-form black holes and four dimensional axionic black holes with flat
horizons, when \Lambda<0. It is found that axionic fields regularize black hole
solutions in the sense, for example, of permitting regular -- rather than
singular -- small mass Reissner-Nordstrom type black holes. Their cosmic string

Logarithmic Corrections to Schwarzschild and Other Non-extremal Black Hole Entropy in Different Dimensions
Euclidean gravity method has been successful in computing logarithmic
corrections to extremal black hole entropy in terms of low energy data, and
gives results in perfect agreement with the microscopic results in string
theory. Motivated by this success we apply Euclidean gravity to compute
logarithmic corrections to the entropy of various non-extremal black holes in
different dimensions, taking special care of integration over the zero modes
and keeping track of the ensemble in which the computation is done. These
results provide strong constraint on any ultraviolet completion of the theory
if the latter is able to give an independent computation of the entropy of
non-extremal black holes from microscopic description. For Schwarzschild black
holes in four space-time dimensions the macroscopic result seems to disagree

For whom does it work? Moderators of outcome on the effect of a transdiagnostic internet-based maintenance treatment after inpatient psychotherapy: Randomized controlled trial
Background: Recent studies provide evidence for the effectiveness of Internet-based maintenance treatments for mental disorders. However, it is still unclear which participants might or might not profit from this particular kind of treatment delivery. Objective: The study aimed to identify moderators of treatment outcome in a transdiagnostic Internet-based maintenance treatment (TIMT) offered to patients after inpatient psychotherapy for mental disorders in routine care. Methods: Using data from a randomized controlled trial (N=400) designed to test the effectiveness of TIMT, we performed secondary analyses to identify factors moderating the effects of TIMT (intervention) when compared with those of a treatment-as-usual control condition. TIMT involved an online self-management module, asynchronous patient-therapist communication, a peer support group, and online-based progress monitoring. Participants in the control condition had unstructured access to outpatient psychotherapy, standardized outpatient face-to-face continuation treatment, and psychotropic management. Self-reports of psychopathological symptoms and potential moderators were assessed at the start of inpatient treatment (T1), at discharge from inpatient treatment/start of TIMT (T2), and at 3-month (T3) and 12-month follow-up (T4). Results: Education level, positive outcome expectations, and diagnoses significantly moderated intervention versus control differences regarding changes in outcomes between T2 and T3. Only education level moderated change differences between T2 and T4. The effectiveness of the intervention (vs control) was more pronounced among participants with a low (vs high) education level (T2-T3: B=-0.32, SE 0.16, P=.049; T2-T4: B=-0.42, SE 0.21, P=.049), participants with high (vs low) positive outcome expectations (T2-T3: B=-0.12, SE 0.05, P=.02) and participants with anxiety disorder (vs mood disorder) (T2-T3: B=-0.43, SE 0.21, P=.04). Simple slope analyses revealed that despite some subgroups benefiting less from the intervention than others, all subgroups still benefited significantly. Conclusions: This transdiagnostic Internet-based maintenance treatment might be suitable for a wide range of participants differing in various clinical, motivational, and demographic characteristics. The treatment is especially effective for participants with low education levels. These findings may generalize to other Internet-based maintenance treatments. Does publication bias inflate the apparent efficacy of psychological treatment for major depressive disorder? A systematic review and meta-analysis of US national institutes of health-funded trials
Background The efficacy of antidepressant medication has been shown empirically to be overestimated due to publication bias, but this has only been inferred statistically with regard to psychological treatment for depression. We assessed directly the extent of study publication bias in trials examining the efficacy of psychological treatment for depression. Methods and Findings We identified US National Institutes of Health grants awarded to fund randomized clinical trials comparing psychological treatment to control conditions or other treatments in patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder for the period 1972–2008, and we determined whether those grants led to publications. For studies that were not published, data were requested from investigators and included in the meta-analyses. Thirteen (23.6%) of the 55 funded grants that began trials did not result in publications, and two others never started. Among comparisons to control conditions, adding unpublished studies (Hedges’ g = 0.20; CI95% -0.11~0.51; k = 6) to published studies (g = 0.52; 0.37~0.68; k = 20) reduced the psychotherapy effect size point estimate (g = 0.39; 0.08~0.70) by 25%. Moreover, these findings may overestimate the "true" effect of psychological treatment for depression as outcome reporting bias could not be examined quantitatively. Conclusion The efficacy of psychological interventions for depression has been overestimated in the published literature, just as it has been for pharmacotherapy. Both are efficacious but not to the extent that the published literature would suggest. Funding agencies and journals should archive both original protocols and raw data from treatment trials to allow the detection and correction of outcome reporting bias. Clinicians, guidelines developers, and decision makers should be aware that the published literature overestimates the effects of the predominant treatments for depression
Using Simulations as a Starting Point for Constructing Meaningful Learning Games
For many school administrators and decision makers, the term “video games” holds numerous cultural associations which make their adoption in the education space challenging. Additionally, the term is so broad that it can sometimes be difficult to communicate explicitly a desire to build learning experiences that go beyond the Drill and Kill edutainment titles that currently dominate most people’s perceptions of educational games. By contrast, the term “simulations” is often well respected among educators, particularly in the natural sciences. With “simulation” already being a full genre of video games, it would seem natural that researchers are beginning to explore the overlaps between simulation games and pedagogical goals that go beyond those found in Drill and Kill games. In this chapter, we survey some of the relevant research concerning both simulations and video games and outline practical pathways through which we can leverage the interest and frameworks designed for simulation construction to facilitate the introduction of video game concepts and experiences into the classroom environment. In particular, we report on the use of Starlogo TNG, a graphical programming environment in which kids themselves can create simulation-based video games, for deepening children’s understanding of scientific concepts
Lovelock gravity from entropic force
In this paper, we first generalize the formulation of entropic gravity to
(n+1)-dimensional spacetime. Then, we propose an entropic origin for
Gauss-Bonnet gravity and more general Lovelock gravity in arbitrary dimensions.
As a result, we are able to derive Newton's law of gravitation as well as the
corresponding Friedmann equations in these gravity theories. This procedure
naturally leads to a derivation of the higher dimensional gravitational
coupling constant of Friedmann/Einstein equation which is in complete agreement
with the results obtained by comparing the weak field limit of Einstein
equation with Poisson equation in higher dimensions. Our study shows that the
approach presented here is powerful enough to derive the gravitational field
