Inverse Symmetry Breaking in Multi-Scalar Field Theories
We review how the phenomena of inverse symmetry breaking (and symmetry
nonrestoration) may arise in the context of relativistic as well as
nonrelativistic multi-scalar field theories. We discuss how the consideration
of thermal effects on the couplings produce different transition patterns for
both theories. For the relativistic case, these effects allow the appearance of
inverse symmetry breaking (and symmetry nonrestoration) at arbitrarily large
temperatures. On the other hand, the same phenomena are suppressed in the
nonrelativistic case, which is relevant for condensed matter physics. In this
case, symmetry nonrestoration does not happen while inverse symmetry is allowed
only to be followed by symmetry restoration characterizing a reentrant phase.
The aim of this paper is to give more insight concerning the, qualitatively
correct, results obtained by using one loop perturbation theory in the

Charm at FAIR
Charmed mesons in hot and dense matter are studied within a self-consistent
coupled-channel approach for the experimental conditions of density and
temperature expected at the CBM experiment at FAIR/GSI. The meson spectral
function broadens with increasing density with an extended tail towards lower
energies due to and
excitations. The in-medium meson mass increases with density. We also
discuss the consequences for the renormalized properties in nuclear matter of
the charm scalar and D(2400), and the predicted hidden charm

Anomalous diffusion in correlated continuous time random walks
We demonstrate that continuous time random walks in which successive waiting
times are correlated by Gaussian statistics lead to anomalous diffusion with
mean squared displacement ~t^{2/3}. Long-ranged correlations of the
waiting times with power-law exponent alpha (0<alpha<=2) give rise to
subdiffusion of the form ~t^{alpha/(1+alpha)}. In contrast correlations
in the jump lengths are shown to produce superdiffusion. We show that in both
cases weak ergodicity breaking occurs. Our results are in excellent agreement

The platinum nuclei: concealed configuration mixing and shape coexistence
The role of configuration mixing in the Pt region is investigated. For this
chain of isotopes, the nature of the ground state changes smoothly, being
spherical around mass and and deformed around the
mid-shell N=104 region. This has a dramatic effect on the systematics of the
energy spectra as compared to the systematics in the Pb and Hg nuclei.
Interacting Boson Model with configuration mixing calculations are presented
for gyromagnetic factors, -decay hindrance factors, and isotope shifts.
The necessity of incorporating intruder configurations to obtain an accurate
description of the latter properties becomes evident.Comment: Accepted in Physical Review
The optical morphologies of the 2Jy sample of radio galaxies: evidence for galaxy interactions
We present deep GMOS-S/Gemini optical broad-band images for a complete sample of 46 southern 2Jy radio galaxies at intermediate redshifts (0.05<z<0.7). Based on them, we discuss the role of galaxy interactions in the triggering of powerful radio galaxies (PRGs). The high-quality observations presented here show for the first time that the overall majority of PRGs at intermediate redshifts (78-85%) show peculiarities in their optical morphologies at relatively high levels of surface brightness(˜μV = 23.6 mag arcsec−2; μV ≃ [21, 26] mag arcsec−2). The observed morphological peculiarities include tails, fans, bridges, shells, dust lanes, irregular features, amorphous haloes, and multiple nuclei. While the results for many of the galaxies are consistent with them being observed at, or after, the time of coalescence of the nuclei in a galaxy merger, we find that more than one-third of the sample are observed in a pre-coalescence phase of the merger, or following a close encounter between galaxies that will not necessarily lead to a merger. By dividing the sample into Weak-Line Radio Galaxies (WLRGs; 11 objects) and Strong-Line Radio Galaxies (SLRGs; 35 objects) we find that only 27% of the former show clear evidence for interactions in
their optical morphologies, in contrast to the SLRGs, of which at least 94% appear interacting. This is consistent with the idea that many WLRGs are fuelled/triggered
by Bondi accretion of hot gas. However, the evidence for interactions and dust features in a fraction of them indicates that the accretion of cold gas cannot always be ruled out. Of the 28% of the sample that display evidence for significant starburst activity, we find that 92% present disturbed morphologies, following the same general trend as the total and SLRG samples. By comparing our PRGs with various samples of quiescent ellipticals from the literature, we conclude that the percentage of morphological
disturbance that we find here exceeds that found for quiescent ellipticals when similar surface brightnesses are considered. Overall, our study indicates that galaxy
interactions are likely to play a key role in the triggering of AGN/jet activity
Bulge RR Lyrae stars in the VVV tile
The VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV) Survey is one of the six ESO
public surveys currently ongoing at the VISTA telescope on Cerro Paranal,
Chile. VVV uses near-IR () filters that at present provide
photometry to a depth of mag in up to 36 epochs spanning
over four years, and aim at discovering more than 10 variable sources as
well as trace the structure of the Galactic bulge and part of the southern
disk. A variability search was performed to find RR Lyrae variable stars. The
low stellar density of the VVV tile , which is centered at
() (), makes it suitable to search for
variable stars. Previous studies have identified some RR Lyrae stars using
optical bands that served to test our search procedure. The main goal is to
measure the reddening, interstellar extinction, and distances of the RR Lyrae
stars and to study their distribution on the Milky Way bulge. A total of 1.5 sq
deg were analyzed, and we found 39 RR Lyrae stars, 27 of which belong to the
ab-type and 12 to the c-type. Our analysis recovers all the previously
identified RR Lyrae variables in the field and discovers 29 new RR Lyrae stars.
The reddening and extinction toward all the RRab stars in this tile were
derived, and distance estimations were obtained through the period--luminosity
relation. Despite the limited amount of RR Lyrae stars studied, our results are
consistent with a spheroidal or central distribution around and
kpc. for either the Cardelli or Nishiyama extinction law.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and
