“You can't kid a kidder”: association between production and detection of deception in an interactive deception task
Both the ability to deceive others, and the ability to detect deception, has long been proposed to confer an evolutionary advantage. Deception detection has been studied extensively, and the finding that typical individuals fare little better than chance in detecting deception is one of the more robust in the behavioral sciences. Surprisingly, little research has examined individual differences in lie production ability. As a consequence, as far as we are aware, no previous study has investigated whether there exists an association between the ability to lie successfully and the ability to detect lies. Furthermore, only a minority of studies have examined deception as it naturally occurs; in a social, interactive setting. The present study, therefore, explored the relationship between these two facets of deceptive behavior by employing a novel competitive interactive deception task (DeceIT). For the first time, signal detection theory (SDT) was used to measure performance in both the detection and production of deception. A significant relationship was found between the deception-related abilities; those who could accurately detect a lie were able to produce statements that others found difficult to classify as deceptive or truthful. Furthermore, neither ability was related to measures of intelligence or emotional ability. We, therefore, suggest the existence of an underlying deception-general ability that varies across individuals
Doping dependent Irreversible Magnetic Properties of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 Single Crystals
We discuss the irreversible magnetic properties of self-flux grown
Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals for a wide range of concentrations covering
the whole phase diagram from the underdoped to the overdoped regime, x=0.038,
0.047, 0.058, 0.071, 0.074, 0.10, 0.106 and 0.118. Samples were characterized
by a magneto-optical method and show excellent spatial uniformity of the
superconducting state. The overall behavior closely follows classical Bean
model of the critical state. The field-dependent magnetization exhibits second
peak at a temperature and doping - dependent magnetic field, Hp. The evolution
of this fishtail feature with doping is discussed. Magnetic relaxation is
time-logarithmic and unusually fast. Similar to cuprates, there is an apparent
crossover from collective elastic to plastic flux creep above Hp. At high
fields, the field dependence of the relaxation rate becomes doping independent.
We discuss our results in the framework of the weak collective pinning and show
that vortex physics in iron-based pnictide crystals is much closer to high-Tc
cuprates than to conventional s-wave (including MgB2) superconductors.Comment: for the special issue of Physica C on iron-based pnictide

Anisotropic London Penetration Depth and Superfluid Density in Single Crystals of Iron-based Pnictide Superconductors
In- and out-of-plane magnetic penetration depths were measured in three
iron-based pnictide superconducting systems. All studied samples of both 122
systems show a robust power-law behavior, , with the
sample-dependent exponent n=2-2.5, which is indicative of unconventional
pairing. This scenario could be possible either through scattering in a state or due to nodes in the superconducting gap. In the Nd-1111 system, the
interpretation of data may be obscured by the magnetism of rare-earth ions. The
overall anisotropy of the pnictide superconductors is small. The 1111 system is
about two times more anisotropic than the 122 system. Our data and analysis
suggest that the iron-based pnictides are complex superconductors in which a
multiband three-dimensional electronic structure and strong magnetic

Convex recovery of a structured signal from independent random linear measurements
This chapter develops a theoretical analysis of the convex programming method
for recovering a structured signal from independent random linear measurements.
This technique delivers bounds for the sampling complexity that are similar
with recent results for standard Gaussian measurements, but the argument
applies to a much wider class of measurement ensembles. To demonstrate the
power of this approach, the paper presents a short analysis of phase retrieval
by trace-norm minimization. The key technical tool is a framework, due to

Sensitive Observations of Radio Recombination Lines in Orion and W51: The Data and Detection of Systematic Recombination Line Blueshifts Proportional to Impact Broadening
Sensitive spectral observations made in two frequency bands near 6.0 and 17.6
GHz are described for Orion and W51. Using frequency switching we were able to
achieve a dynamic range in excess of 10,000 without fitting sinusoidal or
polynomial baselines. This enabled us to detect lines as weak as T\Delta n$ as
high as 25 have been detected in Orion. In the Orion data, where the lines are
stronger, we have also detected a systematic shift in the line center
frequencies proportional to linewidth that cannot be explained by normal

Companion animals are spillover hosts of the Multidrug-resistant human extraintestinal escherichia coli pandemic Clones ST131 and ST1193
Escherichia coli sequence types 131 (ST131) and 1193 are multidrug-resistant extraintestinal pathogens that have recently spread epidemically among humans and are occasionally isolated from companion animals. This study characterized a nationwide collection of fluoroquinolone-resistant (FQR) E. coli isolates from extraintestinal infections in Australian cats and dogs. For this, 59 cat and dog FQR clinical E. coli isolates (representing 6.9% of an 855-isolate collection) underwent PCR-based phylotyping and whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Isolates from commensal-associated phylogenetic groups A (14/59, 24%) and B1 (18/59, 31%) were dominant, with ST224 (10/59, 17%), and ST744 (8/59, 14%) predominating. Less prevalent were phylogenetic groups D (12/59, 20%), with ST38 (8/59, 14%) predominating, and virulence-associated phylogenetic group B2 (7/59, 12%), with ST131 predominating (6/7, 86%) and no ST1193 isolates identified. In a WGS-based comparison of 20 cat and dog-source ST131 isolates with 188 reference human and animal ST131 isolates, the cat and dog-source isolates were phylogenetically diverse. Although cat and dog-source ST131 isolates exhibited some minor sub-clustering, most were closely related to human-source ST131 strains. Furthermore, the prevalence of ST131 as a cause of FQR infections in Australian companion animals was relatively constant between this study and the 5-year-earlier study of Platell et al. (2010) (9/125 isolates, 7.2%). Thus, although the high degree of clonal commonality among FQR clinical isolates from humans vs. companion animals suggests the possibility of bi-directional between-species transmission, the much higher reported prevalence of ST131 and ST1193 among FQR clinical isolates from humans as compared to companion animals suggests that companion animals are spillover hosts rather than being a primary reservoir for these lineages
Good Liars Are Neither ‘Dark’ Nor Self-Deceptive
Deception is a central component of the personality 'Dark Triad' (Machiavellianism, Psychopathy and Narcissism). However, whether individuals exhibiting high scores on Dark Triad measures have a heightened deceptive ability has received little experimental attention. The present study tested whether the ability to lie effectively, and to detect lies told by others, was related to Dark Triad, Lie Acceptability, or Self-Deceptive measures of personality using an interactive group-based deception task. At a group level, lie detection accuracy was correlated with the ability to deceive others—replicating previous work. No evidence was found to suggest that Dark Triad traits confer any advantage either to deceive others, or to detect deception in others. Participants who considered lying to be more acceptable were more skilled at lying, while self-deceptive individuals were generally less credible and less confident when lying. Results are interpreted within a framework in which repeated practice results in enhanced deceptive ability
New exact solution of Dirac-Coulomb equation with exact boundary condition
It usually writes the boundary condition of the wave equation in the Coulomb
field as a rough form without considering the size of the atomic nucleus. The
rough expression brings on that the solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation and
the Dirac equation with the Coulomb potential are divergent at the origin of
the coordinates, also the virtual energies, when the nuclear charges number Z >
137, meaning the original solutions do not satisfy the conditions for
determining solution. Any divergences of the wave functions also imply that the
probability density of the meson or the electron would rapidly increase when
they are closing to the atomic nucleus. What it predicts is not a truth that
the atom in ground state would rapidly collapse to the neutron-like. We
consider that the atomic nucleus has definite radius and write the exact
boundary condition for the hydrogen and hydrogen-like atom, then newly solve
the radial Dirac-Coulomb equation and obtain a new exact solution without any
mathematical and physical difficulties. Unexpectedly, the K value constructed
by Dirac is naturally written in the barrier width or the equivalent radius of
the atomic nucleus in solving the Dirac equation with the exact boundary
condition, and it is independent of the quantum energy. Without any divergent
wave function and the virtual energies, we obtain a new formula of the energy
levels that is different from the Dirac formula of the energy levels in the
