Fusion evaporation-residue cross sections for Si28+40Ca at E(28Si)=309, 397, and 452 MeV
Velocity distributions of mass-identified evaporation residues produced in the Si28+40Ca reaction have been measured at bombarding energies of 309, 397, and 452 MeV using time-of-flight techniques. These distributions were used to identify evaporation residues and to separate the complete-fusion and incomplete-fusion components. Angular distributions and upper limits for the total evaporation-residue and complete-fusion evaporation-residue cross sections were extracted at all three bombarding energies. The complete-fusion evaporation-residue cross sections and the deduced critical angular momenta are compared with earlier measurements and the predictions of existing models. The ratios of the complete-fusion evaporation-residue cross section to the total evaporation-residue cross section, along with those measured for the Si28+12C and Si28+28Si systems at the same energies, support the entrance-channel mass-asymmetry dependence of the incomplete-fusion evaporation-residue process reported earlier
Efeito de grupo versus produção de CO2 em operárias da formiga cortadeira Atta sexdens rubropilosa
Does the social life entail greater individual activity, and consequently, higher energy expenditure? To answer this question, we hypothesized that there is higher CO2 production, when we increase the size of the group of workers, and hence a higher energy cost to the individual when they are in groups. Thus, groups of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 workers were sealed in a hermetic chamber for 24 hours. Subsequently, we performed the measurements of the CO2 concentration in the containers respirometric. Unlike the expected CO2 production, and consequently the individual energy expenditure did not differ when we increase the size of the group of workers. Thus, we refuted the hypothesis that the group size leads to a higher cost individual energy, since the greater interaction between individuals. Social Media, Gender and the Mediatisation of War: Exploring the German Armed Forces’ Visual Representation of the Afghanistan Operation on Facebook
Studies on the mediatisation of war point to attempts of governments to regulate the visual perspective of their involvements in armed conflict – the most notable example being the practice of ‘embedded reporting’ in Iraq and Afghanistan. This paper focuses on a different strategy of visual meaning-making, namely, the publication of images on social media by armed forces themselves. Specifically, we argue that the mediatisation of war literature could profit from an increased engagement with feminist research, both within Critical Security/Critical Military Studies and within Science and Technology Studies that highlight the close connection between masculinity, technology and control. The article examines the German military mission in Afghanistan as represented on the German armed forces’ official Facebook page. Germany constitutes an interesting, and largely neglected, case for the growing literature on the mediatisation of war: its strong antimilitarist political culture makes the representation of war particularly delicate. The paper examines specific representational patterns of Germany’s involvement in Afghanistan and discusses the implications which arise from what is placed inside the frame of visibility and what remains out of its view
Aerobic and anaerobic energy expenditure during rest and activity in montane Bufo b. boreas and Rana pipiens
The relations of standard and active aerobic and anaerobic metabolism and heart rate to body temperature ( T b ) were measured in montane groups of Bufo b. boreas and Rana pipiens maintained under field conditions. These amphibians experience daily variation of T b over 30°C and 23°C, respectively (Carey, 1978). Standard and active aerobic and anaerobic metabolism, heart rate, aerobic and anaerobic scope are markedly temperature-dependent with no broad plateaus of thermal independence. Heart rate increments provide little augmentation of oxygen transport during activity; increased extraction of oxygen from the blood probably contributes importantly to oxygen supply during activity. Development of extensive aerobic capacities in Bufo may be related to aggressive behavior of males during breeding. Standard metabolic rates of both species are more thermally dependent than comparable values for lowland relatives. Thermal sensitivity of physiological functions may have distinct advantages over thermally compensated rates in the short growing season and daily thermal fluctuations of the montane environment.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47726/1/442_2004_Article_BF00348070.pd

Dynamics of an integral membrane peptide: a deuterium NMR relaxation study of gramicidin
Solid state deuterium (2H) NMR inversion-recovery and Jeener-Broekaert relaxation experiments were performed on oriented multilamellar dispersions consisting of 1,2-dilauroyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine and 2H exchange-labeled gramicidin D, at a lipid to protein molar ratio (L/P) of 15:1, in order to study the dynamics of the channel conformation of the peptide in a liquid crystalline phase. Our dynamic model for the whole body motions of the peptide includes diffusion of the peptide around its helix axis and a wobbling diffusion around a second axis perpendicular to the local bilayer normal in a simple Maier-Saupe mean field potential. This anisotropic diffusion is characterized by the correlation times, tau R parallel and tau R perpendicular. Aligning the bilayer normal perpendicular to the magnetic field and graphing the relaxation rate, 1/T1Z, as a function of (1-S2N-2H), where S2N-2H represents the orientational order parameter, wer were able to estimate the correlation time, tau R parallel, for rotational diffusion. Although in the quadrupolar splitting, which varies as (3 cos2 theta D-1), has in general two possible solutions to theta D in the range 0< or = theta D < or = 90 degrees, the 1/T1Z vs. (1-S2N-2H) curve can be used to determine a single value of theta D in this range. Thus, the 1/T1Z vs. (1-S2N-2H) profile can be used both to define the axial diffusion rate and to remove potential structural ambiguities in the splittings. The T1Z anisotropy permits us to solve for the two correlation times (tau R parallel = 6.8 x 10(-9) s and tau R perpendicular = 6 x 10(-6) s). The simulated parameters were corroborated by a Jeener-Broekaert experiment where the bilayer normal was parallel to the principal magnetic field. At this orientation the ratio, J2(2 omega 0)/J1(omega 0) was obtained in order to estimate the strength of the restoring potential in a model-independent fashion. This measurement yields the rms angle, <theta 2>1/2 (= 16 +/- 2 degrees at 34 degrees C), formed by the peptide helix axis and the average bilayer normal
