By means of a UV microbeam the effects of nucleolar irradiation on some cellular processes are studied. On the basis of the results obtained some conclusions are made concerning the role of nucleoli in mitotic processes and the synthesis of ribonucleic acids and proteins.Opisan je uređaj za zračenje tzv. »mikro-snopom« (micro-beam) ultravioletnih zraka. Studij inkorporacije nukleozida, markiranih tricijem, u RNK (ribonukleinsku kiselinu) i DNK (deoksiribonukleinsku kiselinu) He La stanica u kulturi, iza ozračivanja nukleolusa »mikro snopom« ultravioleta, pokazao je slijedeće. Inkorporacija markiranih aminokiselina u proteine nukleusa i citoplazme ostala je (do polovice prve generacije) praktički normalna iza ozračenja nukleolusa »mikro snopom« ultravioletnih zraka.

Dose-Ranging Effect of Adjunctive Oral Cannabidiol vs Placebo on Convulsive Seizure Frequency in Dravet Syndrome A Randomized Clinical Trial

    Get PDF
Question Is adjunctive cannabidiol at doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg/d superior to placebo in reducing convulsive seizure frequency in patients with Dravet syndrome? Findings This double-blind clinical trial randomized 199 children with Dravet syndrome to cannabidiol (10 or 20 mg/kg/d) or matched placebo for 14 weeks. Convulsive seizure frequency compared with baseline was reduced by 48.7% in the 10-mg/kg/d cannabidiol group and 45.7% in the 20-mg/kg/d cannabidiol group vs 26.9% in the placebo group. Meaning Both doses of adjunctive cannabidiol were similarly efficacious in reducing convulsive seizures associated with Dravet syndrome

Towards Solving QCD - The Transverse Zero Modes in Light-Cone Quantization

    Get PDF
We formulate QCD in (d+1) dimensions using Dirac's front form with periodic boundary conditions, that is, within Discretized Light-Cone Quantization. The formalism is worked out in detail for SU(2) pure glue theory in (2+1) dimensions which is approximated by restriction to the lowest {\it transverse} momentum gluons. The dimensionally-reduced theory turns out to be SU(2) gauge theory coupled to adjoint scalar matter in (1+1) dimensions. The scalar field is the remnant of the transverse gluon. This field has modes of both non-zero and zero {\it longitudinal} momentum. We categorize the types of zero modes that occur into three classes, dynamical, topological, and constrained, each well known in separate contexts. The equation for the constrained mode is explicitly worked out. The Gauss law is rather simply resolved to extract physical, namely color singlet states. The topological gauge mode is treated according to two alternative scenarios related to the In the one, a spectrum is found consistent with pure SU(2) gluons in (1+1) dimensions. In the other, the gauge mode excitations are estimated and their role in the spectrum with genuine Fock excitations is explored. A color singlet state is given which satisfies Gauss' law. Its invariant mass is estimated and discussed in the physical limit.Comment: LaTex document, 26 pages, one figure (obtainable by contacting authors). To appear in Physical. Review

Equivalence of Light-Front and Covariant Field Theory

In this paper we discuss the relation between the standard covariant quantum field theory and light-front field theory. We define covariant theory by its Feynman diagrams, whereas light-front field theory is defined in terms of light-cone time-ordered diagrams. A general algorithm is proposed that produces the latter from any Feynman diagram. The procedure is illustrated in several cases. Technical problems that occur in the light-front formulation and have no counterpart in the covariant formulation are identified and solved.Comment: 47 Pages, LaTeX with LaTeX figures included in the tex

Constraining the electric charges of some astronomical bodies in Reissner-Nordstrom spacetimes and generic r^-2-type power-law potentials from orbital motions

We put model-independent, dynamical constraints on the net electric charge Q of some astronomical and astrophysical objects by assuming that their exterior spacetimes are described by the Reissner-Nordstroem metric, which induces an additional potential U_RN \propto Q^2 r^-2. Our results extend to other hypothetical power-law interactions inducing extra-potentials U_pert = r^-2 as well (abridged).Comment: LaTex2e, 16 pages, 3 figures, no tables, 128 references. Please click on the hyperlink in Additional Links fieldEffects of susceptibility variants may depend on from which parent they are inherited. Although many associations between sequence variants and human traits have been discovered through genome-wide associations, the impact of parental origin has largely been ignored. Here we show that for 38,167 Icelanders genotyped using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chips, the parental origin of most alleles can be determined. For this we used a combination of genealogy and long-range phasing. We then focused on SNPs that associate with diseases and are within 500 kilobases of known imprinted genes. Seven independent SNP associations were examined. Five-one with breast cancer, one with basal-cell carcinoma and three with type 2 diabetes-have parental-origin-specific associations. These variants are located in two genomic regions, 11p15 and 7q32, each harbouring a cluster of imprinted genes. Furthermore, we observed a novel association between the SNP rs2334499 at 11p15 and type 2 diabetes. Here the allele that confers risk when paternally inherited is protective when maternally transmitted. We identified a differentially methylated CTCF-binding site at 11p15 and demonstrated correlation of rs2334499 with decreased methylation of that site.info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/EC/FP7/21807

Psychosocial Treatment of Children in Foster Care: A Review

    Get PDF
A substantial number of children in foster care exhibit psychiatric difficulties. Recent epidemiologi-cal and historical trends in foster care, clinical findings about the adjustment of children in foster care, and adult outcomes are reviewed, followed by a description of current approaches to treatment and extant empirical support. Available interventions for these children can be categorized as either symptom-focused or systemic, with empirical support for specific methods ranging from scant to substantial. Even with treatment, behavioral and emotional problems often persist into adulthood, resulting in poor functional outcomes. We suggest that self-regulation may be an important mediat-ing factor in the appearance of emotional and behavioral disturbance in these children
