The rho meson decay constant using a tadpole-improved action
The rho meson decay constant and the associated renormalization factor are
computed in the quenched approximation on coarse lattices using a
tadpole-improved action which is corrected at the classical level to O(a^2).
The improvement is displayed by comparing to Wilson action calculations.Comment: Talk presented at LATTICE96(improvement), 3 pages, LaTeX, uses epsf

Light hadron masses with an improved NNN action
Meson and baryon masses in the light (u,d and s) sector are calculated using
tadpole-improved gauge field and fermion actions. These are corrected to order
on the classical level using next-nearest-neighbour terms. The
results, obtained at lattice spacings of 0.4 and 0.27fm, are compared to Wilson
action calculations.Comment: Talk presented at LATTICE96(improvement
How climate compatible are livelihood adaptation strategies and development programs in rural Indonesia?
AbstractAchieving climate compatible development (CCD) is a necessity in developing countries, but there are few examples of requisite planning processes, or manifestations of CCD. This paper presents a multi-stakeholder, participatory planning process designed to screen and prioritise rural livelihood adaptation strategies against nine CCD criteria. The process also integrated three principles of adaptation pathways: interventions should be (1) ‘no regrets’ and maintain reversibility to avoid mal-adaptation; (2) address both proximate and underlying systemic drivers of community vulnerability; and (3) linked across spatial scales and jurisdictional levels to promote coordination. Using examples of two rural sub-districts in Indonesia, we demonstrate the process and resulting CCD strategies. Priority strategies varied between the sub-districts but all reflected standard development interventions: water management, intensification or diversification of agriculture and aquaculture, education, health, food security and skills-building for communities. Strategies delivered co-benefits for human development and ecosystem services and hence adaptive capacity, but greenhouse mitigation co-benefits were less significant. Actions to deliver the strategies’ objectives were screened for reversibility, and a minority were potentially mal-adaptive (i.e. path dependent, disproportionately burdening the most vulnerable, reducing incentives to adapt, or increasing greenhouse gas emissions) yet highly feasible. These related to infrastructure, which paradoxically is necessary to deliver ‘soft’ adaptation benefits (i.e. road access to health services). Only a small minority of transformative strategies addressed the systemic (i.e. institutional and political) drivers of vulnerability. Strategies were well-matched by development programs, suggesting that current interventions mirror CCD. However, development programs tackled fewer systemic drivers, were poorly coordinated and had a higher risk of mal-adaptation. We conclude that the approach is effective for screening and prioritising no regrets CCD, but more extensive learning processes are necessary to build decision-makers’ capacity to tackle systemic drivers, and to scrutinise potentially mal-adaptive infrastructural investments
Travelling and sticky affects: : Exploring teens and sexualized cyberbullying through a Butlerian-Deleuzian- Guattarian lens
In this paper we combine the thinking of Deleuze and Guattari (1984, 1987) with Judith Butler’s (1990, 1993, 2004, 2009) work to follow the rhizomatic becomings of young people’s affective relations in a range of on- and off-line school spaces. In particular we explore how events that may be designated as sexual cyberbullying are constituted and how they are mediated by technology (such as texting or in/through social networking sites). Drawing on findings from two different studies looking at teens’ uses of and experiences with social networking sites, Arto in Denmark, and Bebo in the UK, we use this approach to think about how affects flow, are distributed, and become fixed in assemblages. We map how affects are manoeuvred and potentially disrupted by young people, suggesting that in the incidences discussed affects travel as well as stick in points of fixation. We argue that we need to grasp both affective flow and fixity in order to gain knowledge of how subjectification of the gendered/classed/racialised/sexualised body emerges. A Butlerian-Deleuzian-Guattarian frame helps us to map some of these affective complexities that shape sexualized cyberbully events; and to recognize technologically mediated lines of flight when subjectifications are at least temporarily disrupted and new terms of recognition and intelligibility staked out. A Pair of Disjoint 3-GDDs of type g^t u^1
Pairwise disjoint 3-GDDs can be used to construct some optimal

Geological relationships and laser ablation ICP-MS U-Pb geochronology of the Saint George Batholith, southwestern New Brunswick, Canada: implications for its tectonomagmatic evolution
The Late Silurian to Late Devonian Saint George Batholith in southwestern New Brunswick is a large composite intrusion (2000 km2) emplaced into the continental margin of the peri-Gondwanan microcontinent of Ganderia. The batholith includes: (1) Bocabec Gabbro; (2) equigranular Utopia and Wellington Lake biotite granites; (3) Welsford, Jake Lee Mountain, and Parks Brook peralkaline granites; (4) two-mica John Lee Brook Granite; (6) Jimmy Hill and Magaguadavic megacrystic granites; and (6) rapakivi Mount Douglas Granite. New LA ICP-MS in situ analyses of six samples from the Saint George Batholith are as follows: (1) U-Pb monazite crystallization age of 425.5 ± 2.1 Ma for the Utopia Granite in the western part of the batholith (2) U-Pb zircon crystallization ages of 420.4 ± 2.4 Ma and 420.0 ± 3.5 Ma for two samples of the Utopia Granite from the central part of the batholith; (3) U-Pb zircon crystallization age of 418.0 ± 2.3 Ma for the Jake Lee Mountain Granite; (4) U-Pb zircon crystallization age of 415.5 ± 2.1 Ma for the Wellington Lake Granite; and (5) U-Pb monazite crystallization age of 413.3 ± 2.1 Ma for the John Lee Brook Granite. The new geochronological together with new and existing geochemical data suggest that the protracted magmatic evolution of the Late Silurian to Early Devonian plutonic rocks is related to the transition of the Silurian Kingston arc-Mascarene backarc system from an extensional to compressional tectonic environment during collision of the Avalonian microcontinent with Laurentia followed by slab break-off.
Quasi-Local Density Functional Theory and its Application within Extended Thomas-Fermi Approximation
A generalization of the Density Functional Theory is proposed. The theory
developed leads to single-particle equations of motion with a quasi-local
mean-field operator, which contains a quasi-particle position-dependent
effective mass and a spin-orbit potential. The energy density functional is
constructed using the Extended Thomas-Fermi approximation. Within the framework
of this approach the ground-state properties of the doubly magic nuclei are
considered. The calculations have been performed using the finite-range Gogny
D1S force. The results are compared with the exact Hartree-Fock calculations
Verifying parameterized timed security protocols
Quantitative timing is often explicitly used in systems for better security, e.g., the credentials for automatic website logon often has limited lifetime. Verifying timing relevant security protocols in these systems is very challenging as timing adds another dimension of complexity compared with the untimed protocol verification. In our previous work, we proposed an approach to check the correctness of the timed authentication in security protocols with fixed timing constraints. However, a more difficult question persists, i.e., given a particular protocol design, whether the protocol has security flaws in its design or it can be configured secure with proper parameter values? In this work, we answer this question by proposing a parameterized verification framework, where the quantitative parameters in the protocols can be intuitively specified as well as automatically analyzed. Given a security protocol, our verification algorithm either produces the secure constraints of the parameters, or constructs an attack that works for any parameter values. The correctness of our algorithm is formally proved. We implement our method into a tool called PTAuth and evaluate it with several security protocols. Using PTAuth, we have successfully found a timing attack in Kerberos V which is unreported before. No Full Tex
Global DNA methylation and cognitive and behavioral outcomes at 4 years of age: A cross‐sectional study
Background
Accumulating evidence suggests that breastfeeding exclusivity and duration are positively associated with child cognition. This study investigated whether DNA methylation, an epigenetic mechanism modified by nutrient intake, may contribute to the link between breastfeeding and child cognition. The aim was to quantify the relationship between global DNA methylation and cognition and behavior at 4 years of age.
Methods
Child behavior and cognition were measured at age 4 years using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, third version (WPPSI‐III), and Child Behavior Checklist (CBC). Global DNA methylation (%5‐methylcytosines (%5mC)) was measured in buccal cells at age 4 years, using an enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) commercial kit. Linear regression models were used to quantify the statistical relationships.
Results
Data were collected from 73 children recruited from the Women and Their Children's Health (WATCH) study. No statistically significant associations were found between global DNA methylation levels and child cognition or behavior (p > .05), though the estimates of effect were consistently negative. Global DNA methylation levels in males were significantly higher than in females (median %5mC: 1.82 vs. 1.03, males and females, respectively, (p < .05)).
Conclusion
No association was found between global DNA methylation and child cognition and behavior; however given the small sample, this study should be pooled with other cohorts in future meta‐analyses
The Centurion 18 telescope of the Wise Observatory
We describe the second telescope of the Wise Observatory, a 0.46-m Centurion
18 (C18) installed in 2005, which enhances significantly the observing
possibilities. The telescope operates from a small dome and is equipped with a
large-format CCD camera. In the last two years this telescope was intensively
used in a variety of monitoring projects.
The operation of the C18 is now automatic, requiring only start-up at the
beginning of a night and close-down at dawn. The observations are mostly
performed remotely from the Tel Aviv campus or even from the observer's home.
The entire facility was erected for a component cost of about 70k$ and a labor
investment of a total of one man-year.
We describe three types of projects undertaken with this new facility: the
measurement of asteroid light variability with the purpose of determining
physical parameters and binarity, the following-up of transiting extrasolar
planets, and the study of AGN variability. The successful implementation of the
C18 demonstrates the viability of small telescopes in an age of huge
light-collectors, provided the operation of such facilities is very efficient.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, some figures quality was degraded, accepted for
