    Long secondary periods in variable red giants

DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2009.15401.xWe present a study of a sample of Large Magellanic Cloud red giants exhibiting Long Secondary Periods (LSPs). We use radial velocities obtained from VLT spectral observations and MACHO and OGLE light curves to examine properties of the stars and to evaluate models for the cause of LSPs. This sample is much larger than the combined previous studies of Hinkle et al. and Wood, Olivier & Kawaler. Binary and pulsation models have enjoyed much support in recent years. Assuming stellar pulsation, we calculate from the velocity curves that the typical fractional radius change over an LSP cycle is greater than 30 per cent. This should lead to large changes in Teff that are not observed. Also, the small light amplitude of these stars seems inconsistent with the radius amplitude. We conclude that pulsation is not a likely explanation for the LSPs. The main alternative, physical movement of the star – binary motion – also has severe problems. If the velocity variations are due to binary motion, the distribution of the angle of periastron in our large sample of stars has a probability of 1.4 × 10−3 that it comes from randomly aligned binary orbits. In addition, we calculate a typical companion mass of 0.09 M⊙ . Less than 1 per cent of low-mass main-sequence stars have companions near this mass (0.06–0.12 M⊙) whereas ∼25–50 per cent of low-mass red giants end up with LSPs. We are unable to find a suitable model for the LSPs and conclude by listing their known properties.Peer reviewe

    The search for exudates from Eurasian watermilfoil and hydrilla

    Secondary metabolites are produced by aquatic plants, and in some instances, exudation of these metabolites into the surrounding water has been detected. To determine whether infestations of Eurasian watermilfoil or hydrilla produce such exudates, plant tissues and water samples were collected from laboratory cultures and pond populations and were analyzed using solid phase extraction, HPLC, and various methods of mass spectrometry including electrospray ionization, GC/MS, electron impact and chemical ionization. Previously reported compounds such as tellimagrandin II (from Eurasian watermilfoil) and a caffeic acid ester (from hvdrilla), along with a newly discovered flavonoid, cyanidin 3 dimalonyl glucoside (from hydrilla), were readily detected in plant tissues used in this research but were not detected in any of the water samples. If compounds are being released, as suggested by researchers using axenic cultures, we hypothesize that they may be rapidly degraded by bacteria and therefore undetectable

    Evaluating Tisza River Basin Development Plans Using Multiattribute Utility Theory

    Selecting a plan to develop the water resources of a region involves the consideration of economic, environmental, social, and technical objectives. Twelve attributes are defined to indicate the degree to which these objectives are achieved in the Tisza River basin of Hungary. A preliminary multiattribute utility function is assessed over these attributes. This is combined with existing information describing the possible consequences of five alternative development plans to yield an overall rating of their desirability. The utility function explicitly indicates the preference tradeoffs among attributes. Discussion indicates further uses of the utility function in the planning and evaluation processes

    Intellectual functioning in clinically confirmed fetal valproate syndrome

    Background: An increased risk of impaired intelligence (IQ) has been documented in valproate-exposed children, but investigations have not previously focused on those with a clinical diagnosis of Fetal Valproate Syndrome (FVS). Methods: This cross sectional observational study recruited individuals with a diagnosis of FVS and completed standardized assessments of intellectual abilities making comparisons to a normative comparison group. Both mean difference (MD) and prevalence of scores below the lower average range were analyzed. Results: The mean full-scale IQ in 31 individuals with FVS (mean age 14.97; range 6–27 years) was 19 points lower (19.55, 95% CI −24.94 to 14.15), and IQ scores <70 were present in 26%. The mean differences for verbal comprehension (21.07, 95% CI −25.84 to −16.29), working memory (19.77, 95% CI −25.00 to −14.55) and processing speed (16.87, 95% CI −22.24 to −11.50) performances were poorer than expected with the mean differences over one standard deviation from the comparison group. Sixty one percent of cases demonstrated disproportionately lower verbal comprehension ability. There were no significant group differences for IQ in high vs. moderate dose valproate or mono vs. polytherapy. There were no differences in IQ between those with and those without a major congenital malformation. The requirement for educational intervention was high at 74%. Conclusion: Intellectual difficulties are a central feature of FVS and are more severe in their presentation in individuals with a diagnosis of valproate embryopathy. Individuals with FVS who present with the characteristic facial presentation should be considered at high risk of cognitive difficulties regardless of the dose of valproate exposure or the presence of a major congenital malformation

    An agent-based traffic simulation framework to model intelligent virtual driver behaviour

    This paper presents an agent-based traffic simulation framework that supports intelligent virtual driver behaviour. The framework exploits concepts used in Artificial Life (ALife), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Agent technology to model the inherent unpredictability and autonomous behaviour of drivers within traffic simulation models. Each driver agent in our system contains knowledge and a decision-making mechanism, both of which are based on heuristics. This approach replaces some of the prescriptive nature of driving simulation models by allowing behaviours to emerge as a result of individual driver agent interactions. The framework also contributes to accident analysis by improving current limitations in which accident investigation methods concentrate on the events themselves, rather than pre-crash influences. Within this context, the framework provides an opportunity to increase the understanding of accident causation factors, to examine alternative traffic scenarios (what if analyses) and methodology to obtain quantitative estimates of accident risk. Current implementation results show that driver agents within the integrated simulation are able to perceive other drivers’ speeds and distances, avoid collisions, perform realistic vehicle following, and demonstrate emergent traffic flow. A major application area for this framework includes the evaluation of vehicle, highway and road user factors that precede a collision, or near misses

    Encrypted Shared Data Spaces

    The deployment of Share Data Spaces in open, possibly hostile, environments arises the need of protecting the confidentiality of the data space content. Existing approaches focus on access control mechanisms that protect the data space from untrusted agents. The basic assumption is that the hosts (and their administrators) where the data space is deployed have to be trusted. Encryption schemes can be used to protect the data space content from malicious hosts. However, these schemes do not allow searching on encrypted data. In this paper we present a novel encryption scheme that allows tuple matching on completely encrypted tuples. Since the data space does not need to decrypt tuples to perform the search, tuple confidentiality can be guaranteed even when the data space is deployed on malicious hosts (or an adversary gains access to the host). Our scheme does not require authorised agents to share keys for inserting and retrieving tuples. Each authorised agent can encrypt, decrypt, and search encrypted tuples without having to know other agents’ keys. This is beneficial inasmuch as it simplifies the task of key management. An implementation of an encrypted data space based on this scheme is described and some preliminary performance results are given

    Metal-rich carbon stars in the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy

DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2009.14736.xWe present spectroscopic observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope of six carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph) and two foreground Galactic carbon stars. The band strengths of the observed C2H2 and SiC features are very similar to those observed in Galactic AGB stars. The metallicities are estimated from an empirical relation between the acetylene optical depth and the strength of the SiC feature. The metallicities are higher than those of the Large Magellanic Cloud, and close to Galactic values. While the high metallicity could imply an age of around 1 Gyr, for the dusty AGB stars, the pulsation periods suggest ages in excess of 2 or 3 Gyr. We fit the spectra of the observed stars using the dusty radiative transfer model and determine their dust mass-loss rates to be in the range 1.0–3.3 × 10−8 M⊙ yr−1 . The two Galactic foreground carbon-rich AGB stars are located at the far side of the solar circle, beyond the Galactic Centre. One of these two stars shows the strongest SiC feature in our present Local Group sample.Peer reviewe

    A Lagrangian model for simulating the dispersal of sand-sized particles in coastal waters

    A model, SandTrack, has been established to simulate movements of sand-sized particles in coastal waters within a Lagrangian framework. The model can be applied to assess the dispersal of contaminated particulate material, such as may be associated with industrial discharges, or the dispersal of dredged spoil. For such applications, the Lagrangian approach is essential, as the identity of the particles is important. Although Lagrangian models existed previously which could simulate fine sediment constantly in suspension, there are certain applications, such as dealing with the movement of bed particles, in which intermittent physical processes are critical. SandTrack has been tested against field observations from the coastal waters near Dounreay, United Kingdom. The tests strengthened confidence in the model predictions, and enabled appropriate values of some of the model's main physical parameters to be set. Some features of the particle distributions simulated by SandTrack are consistent with field observations, and are not achievable with simpler sediment transport models. The model's run times are sufficiently short for simulations of particle movement in moderately large coastal areas over several decades to be practical

    Classifying livestock production systems for targeting agricultural research and development in a rapidly changing world

    A myriad of agricultural and livestock production systems co-exist in the developing countries. Agricultural research for development should therefore aim at delivering strategies that are well targeted to the heterogeneous landscapes and diverse biophysical and socioeconomic contexts the agricultural production system is operating in. To that end, in the recent past several approaches to spatially delineate landscapes with broadly similar production strategies, constraints and investment opportunities, have been applied. The mapped Seré and Steinfeld livestock production classification, for example, has been widely used for the targeting of pro-poor livestock intervention within ILRI. In this paper we describe potential methodologies for the inclusion of crop-specificity and intensification in the existing Seré and Steinfeld livestock systems classification. We also present some first broad-brush future projections of these detailed crop-livestock production systems. A number of example applications are discussed and recommendations for future improvement and use are made. While the production system classifications are especially useful for bio-physical applications such as livestock-environment interactions and feed assessments, the links with socioeconomic factors still need to be explored further. Also, it is only one of the necessary building blocks for better targeting of research and development efforts. We, however,believe that the proposed system classifications will be of use to a variety of agricultural and livestock scientists and development agents alike. In addition, they serve as practical examples making the case for the use of spatial stratification when targeting agricultural research and development
