    Early above- and below-ground responses of subboreal conifer seedlings to various levels of deciduous canopy removal

    We examined the growth of understory conifers, following partial or complete deciduous canopy removal, in a field study established in two regions in Canada. In central British Columbia, we studied the responses of three species (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco, Picea glauca (Moench) Voss x Picea engelmannii Parry ex Engelm., and Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt.), and in northwestern Quebec, we studied one species (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.). Stem and root diameter and height growth were measured 5 years before and 3 years after harvesting. Both root and stem diameter growth increased sharply following release but seedlings showed greater root growth, suggesting that in the short term, improvement in soil resource capture and transport, and presumably stability, may be more important than an increase in stem diameter and height growth. Response was strongly size dependent, which appears to reflect greater demand for soil resources as well as higher light levels and greater tree vigour before release for taller individuals. Growth ratios could not explain the faster response generally attributed to true fir species or the unusual swift response of spruces. Good prerelease vigour of spruces, presumably favoured by deciduous canopies, could explain their rapid response to release

    Using laboratory experiments to study law and crime

    The 19th and 20th centuries produced breakthroughs in physics, chemistry, and the biological sciences. Laboratory research played an important role in the rapid advances made in these fields. Laboratory research can also contribute progress in the social sciences and, in particular, to law and criminology. To make this argument, we begin by discussing what laboratory experiments can and cannot do. We then provide three illustrations of lab experiments that have contributed to understanding of crime and law and discuss how these laboratory data complement those gained through other methods

    Reviews on drag reducing polymers

    Polymers are effective drag reducers owing to their ability to suppress the formation of turbulent eddies at low concentrations. Existing drag reduction methods can be generally classified into additive and non-additive techniques. The polymer additive based method is categorized under additive techniques. Other drag reducing additives are fibers and surfactants. Non-additive techniques are associated with the applications of different types of surfaces: riblets, dimples, oscillating walls, compliant surfaces and microbubbles. This review focuses on experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling studies on polymer-induced drag reduction in turbulent regimes. Other drag reduction methods are briefly addressed and compared to polymer-induced drag reduction. This paper also reports on the effects of polymer additives on the heat transfer performances in laminar regime. Knowledge gaps and potential research areas are identified. It is envisaged that polymer additives may be a promising solution in addressing the current limitations of nanofluid heat transfer applications
