    Horizontal deflection of single particle in a paramagnetic fluid

    This paper describes the horizontal deflection behaviour of a single particle in paramagnetic fluids under a high-gradient superconducting magnetic field. A glass box was designed to carry out experiments and test assumptions. It was found that the particles were deflected away from the magnet bore centre and particles with different density and/or susceptibility settled at a certain position on the container floor due to the combined forces of gravity and magneto-Archimedes as well as lateral buoyant (displacement) force. Matlab was chosen to simulate the movement of the particle in the magnetic fluid, the simulation results were in good accordance with experimental data. The results presented here, though, are still very much in their infancy, which could potentially form the basis of a new approach to separating materials based on a combination of density and susceptibility.     Community-based processes behind species richness gradients: contrasting abundance–extinction dynamics and sampling effects in areas of low and high productivity

    Aim To consider the role of local colonization and extinction rates in explaining the generation and maintenance of species richness gradients at the regional scale. Location A Mediterranean biome (oak forests, deciduous forests, shrublands, pinewoods, firwoods, alpine heathlands, crops) in Catalonia, Spain. Methods We analysed the relative importance of direct and indirect effects of community size in explaining species richness gradients. Direct sampling effects of community size on species richness are predicted by Hubbell’s neutral theory of biodiversity and biogeography. The greater the number of individuals in a locality, the greater the number of species expected by random direct sampling effects. Indirect effects are predicted by the abundance–extinction hypothesis, which states that in more productive sites increased population densities and reduced extinction rates may lead to high species richness. The study system was an altitudinal gradient of forest bird species richness. Results We found significant support for the existence of both direct and indirect effects of community size in species richness. Thus, both the neutral and the abundance–extinction hypotheses were supported for the altitudinal species rich- ness gradient of forest birds in Catalonia. However, these mechanisms seem to drive variation in species richness only in low-productivity areas; in high-productivity areas, species richness was uncorrelated with community size and productivity measures.Peer reviewe

    Pattern Formation in Laser Induced Melting

    A laser focussed onto a semiconductor film can create a disordered lamellae pattern of coexisting molten-solid regions. We present a continuum model based on the higher reflectivity of the molten regions. For large latent heat, this model becomes equivalent to a model of block copolymers. The characteristic wavenumber of the lamellae is that marginally stable to slow variations in the orientation (the zig-zag instability) and is obtained via systematic expansions from two limits. The lamellae can also be unstable to the zig-zag instability and Eckhaus instability simultaneously. This instability is a signal of dynamic steady states. We numerically study the behaviour after a quench. The lamellar size agrees with the analytic results and experiments. For shallow quenches, locally parallel stripes slowly straighten in time. For deep quenches, a disordered lamellae forms. We construct the director field and determine the orientational correlation length. Near onset the correlation is fixed by the system size. Far from onset the correlation length saturates at a finite value.
