Potential for Precision Measurement of Solar Neutrino Luminosity by HERON
Results are presented for a simulation carried out to test the precision with
which a detector design (HERON) based on a superfluid helium target material
should be able to measure the solar pp and Be7 fluxes. It is found that
precisions of +/- 1.68% and +/- 2.97% for pp and Be7 fluxes, respectively,
should be achievable in a 5-year data sample. The physics motivation to aim for
these precisions is outlined as are the detector design, the methods used in
the simulation and sensitivity to solar orbit eccentricity.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figure
Rayleigh Scattering in Rare Gas Liquids
The Rayleigh scattering length has been calculated for rare-gas liquids in
the ultraviolet for the frequencies at which they luminesce. The calculations
are based on the measured dielectric constants in the gas phase, except in the
case of xenon for which measurements are available in the liquid. The
scattering length mayplace constraints on the design of some large-scale
detectors, using uv luminescence, being proposed to observe solar neutrinos and
dark matter. Rayleigh scattering in mixtures of rare-gas mixtures is also
discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 4 tables; This version corrects erratum in table and has

Solar Neutrinos with Three Flavor Mixings
The recent 71Ga solar neutrino observation is combined with the 37Cl and
Kamiokande-II observations in an analysis for neutrino masses and mixings. The
allowed parameter region is found for matter enhanced mixings among all three
neutrino flavors. Distortions of the solar neutrino spectrum unique to three
flavors are possible and may be observed in continuing and next generation
experiments.Comment: August 1992 (Revised) PURD-TH-92-
Solar Neutrinos: What We Have Learned
The four operating solar neutrino experiments confirm the hypothesis that the
energy source for solar luminosity is hydrogen fusion. However, the measured
rate for each of the four solar neutrino experiments differs significantly (by
factors of 2.0 to 3.5) from the corresponding theoretical prediction that is
based upon the standard solar model and the simplest version of the standard
electroweak theory. If standard electroweak theory is correct, the energy
spectrum for \b8 neutrinos created in the solar interior must be the same (to
one part in ) as the known laboratory \b8 neutrino energy spectrum.
Direct comparison of the chlorine and the Kamiokande experiments, both
sensitive to \b8 neutrinos, suggests that the discrepancy between theory and
observations depends upon neutrino energy, in conflict with standard
expectations. Monte Carlo studies with 1000 implementations of the standard
solar model confirm that the chlorine and the Kamiokande experiments cannot be
reconciled unless new weak interaction physics changes the shape of the \b8
neutrino energy spectrum. The results of the two gallium solar neutrino
experiments strengthen the conclusion that new physics is required and help
determine a relatively small allowed region for the MSW neutrino parameters.Comment: LaTeX file, 19 pages. For hardcopy with figures contact

Supernova Observation Via Neutrino-Nucleus Elastic Scattering in the CLEAN Detector
Development of large mass detectors for low-energy neutrinos and dark matter
may allow supernova detection via neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering. An
elastic-scattering detector could observe a few, or more, events per ton for a
galactic supernova at 10 kpc ( m). This large yield, a
factor of at least 20 greater than that for existing light-water detectors,
arises because of the very large coherent cross section and the sensitivity to
all flavors of neutrinos and antineutrinos. An elastic scattering detector can
provide important information on the flux and spectrum of and
from supernovae. We consider many detectors and a range of target
materials from He to Pb. Monte Carlo simulations of low-energy
backgrounds are presented for the liquid-neon-based Cryogenic Low Energy
Astrophysics with Noble gases (CLEAN) detector. The simulated background is
much smaller than the expected signal from a galactic supernova.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Research program in experimental high energy physics. Task C. Progress report, January 1, 1979-December 31, 1979. [Summaries of research activities at Brown Univ]
An experimental program in strong and weak interaction physics of elementary particles is being carried out using electronic detection techniques. Experiments have been performed or have been proposed utilizing the accelerators of the laboratories at Brookhaven, Fermilab, LAMPF, and SLAC. The experiments described by the Electronic Detector Group include the following: an analysis of resonances in the proton-antiproton system, a study of inclusive scattering in hadron reactions of the form a + p(n) ..-->.. b + X, where a and b can be ..pi..+-, K+-, p+- in any combination at incident momenta up to 175 GeV/c, an experiment to measure neutrino-electron and other neutral current phenomena at the BNL-AGS, and development of a muon polarimeter and proposals for its use in further experiments.
