    Management practices for the amelioration of urban stormwater

    AbstractUrban runoff has been identified as a non-point source (NPS) contributor. The most effective mechanism for controlling urban NPS pollution is to reduce the amount of runoff through infiltration and storage on the landscape. Traditional infiltration best management practices (BMPs) have lacked long-term effectiveness because of clogging. The addition of vegetation to the system enhances the longevity of infiltration BMPs by enhancing soil structure. In order to better understand the design and function of vegetated, infiltration-based BMPs, Kansas State University is monitoring several sites in Kansas. Results indicate that vegetation enhances the ability of stormwater systems to store water and reduce down channel erosion and flooding

    The phenomenon of gyroscopic precession is studied within the framework of Frenet-Serret formalism adapted to quasi-Killing trajectories. Its relation to the congruence vorticity is highlighted with particular reference to the irrotational congruence admitted by the stationary, axisymmetric spacetime. General precession formulae are obtained for circular orbits with arbitrary constant angular speeds. By successive reduction, different types of precessions are derived for the Kerr - Schwarzschild - Minkowski spacetime family. The phenomenon is studied in the case of other interesting spacetimes, such as the De Sitter and G\"{o}del universes as well as the general stationary, cylindrical, vacuum spacetimes.Comment: 37 pages, Paper in Late

    Out-of-equilibrium evolution of scalar fields in FRW cosmology: renormalization and numerical simulations

    We present a renormalized computational framework for the evolution of a self-interacting scalar field (inflaton) and its quantum fluctuations in an FRW background geometry. We include a coupling of the field to the Ricci scalar with a general coupling parameter ξ\xi. We take into account the classical and quantum back reactions, i.e., we consider the the dynamical evolution of the cosmic scale factor. We perform, in the one-loop and in the large-N approximation, the renormalization of the equation of motion for the inflaton field, and of its energy momentum tensor. Our formalism is based on a perturbative expansion for the mode functions, and uses dimensional regularization. The renormalization procedure is manifestly covariant and the counter terms are independent of the initial state. Some shortcomings in the renormalization of the energy-momentum tensor in an earlier publication are corrected. We avoid the occurence of initial singularities by constructing a suitable class of initial states.     Social capital and soil conservation: Evidence from the Philippines

    The formation of social capital is hypothesised to enhance collective efforts for soil conservation. The Landcare Program in the Southern Philippines promotes simple conservation practices in upland environments by supporting community landcare groups and municipal landcare associations, thus augmenting social capital. A study was conducted in 2002 to evaluate the Landcare Program, using a mix of quantitative and qualitative techniques. In this paper the relationship between social capital formation and adoption of soil conservation is investigated. It is concluded that, although membership in a local landcare group was not a major factor in adoption, the Landcare Program as a whole created a valuable stock of bridging social capital, with significant benefits for long-term natural resource management

    Nonlinear evolution of the momentum dependent condensates in strong interaction: the ``pseudoscalar laser''

    We discuss the relaxation of the scalar and pseudoscalar condensates after a rapid quench from an initial state with fluctuations. If we include not only the zero-mode but also higher modes of the condensates in the classical evolution, we observe parametric amplification of those ``hard'' modes. Thus, they couple nonlinearly to the ``soft'' modes. As a consequence, domains of coherent pi-field emerge long after the initial spinodal decomposition.     Gauge Theory and the Excision of Repulson Singularities

    We study brane configurations that give rise to large-N gauge theories with eight supersymmetries and no hypermultiplets. These configurations include a variety of wrapped, fractional, and stretched branes or strings. The corresponding spacetime geometries which we study have a distinct kind of singularity known as a repulson. We find that this singularity is removed by a distinctive mechanism, leaving a smooth geometry with a core having an enhanced gauge symmetry.     Project manager-to-project allocations in practice: an empirical study of the decision-making practices of a multi-project based organization

    Empirical studies that examine how managers make project manager-to-project (PM2P) allocation decisions in multi-project settings are currently limited. Such decisions are crucial to organizational success. An empirical study of the PM2P practice, conducted in the context of Botswana, revealed ineffective processes in terms of optimality in decision-making. A conceptual model to guide effective PM2P practices was developed. The focus of this study is on deploying the model as a lens to study the PM2P practices of a large organization, with a view to identify and illustrate strengths and weaknesses. A case study was undertaken in the mining industry, where core activities in terms of projects are underground mineral explorations at identified geographical regions. A semi-structured interview protocol was used to collect data from 15 informants, using an enumeration. Integrated analysis of both data types (using univariate descriptive analysis for the quantitative data, content and thematic analysis for the qualitative data) revealed strengths in PM2P practices, demonstrated by informants’ recognition of some important criteria to be considered. The key weaknesses were exemplified by a lack of effective management tools and techniques to match project managers to projects. The findings provide a novel perspective through which improvements in working practices can be made
