Simulation of Alternative Marketing Strategies for U.S. Cotton
Three marketing strategies (selling a put option, cash sale at harvest, and cash sale in June) are simulated based on historical values and ranked based on certainty equivalents for a representative irrigated and dryland cotton farm Scenario analysis is also used to compare varying yield values.Simulation, Marketing, Cotton, Risk, Marketing, Research Methods/ Statistical Methods,
Two-Rowed Hecke Algebra Representations at Roots of Unity
In this paper, we initiate a study into the explicit construction of
irreducible representations of the Hecke algebra of type in
the non-generic case where is a root of unity. The approach is via the
Specht modules of which are irreducible in the generic case, and
possess a natural basis indexed by Young tableaux. The general framework in
which the irreducible non-generic -modules are to be constructed is set
up and, in particular, the full set of modules corresponding to two-part
partitions is described. Plentiful examples are given.Comment: LaTeX, 9 pages. Submitted for the Proceedings of the 4th

Next-to-Leading order approximation of polarized valon and parton distributions
Polarized parton distributions and structure functions of the nucleon are
analyzed in the improved valon model. The valon representation provides a model
to represent hadrons in terms of quarks, providing a unified description of
bound state and scattering properties of hadrons. Polarized valon distributions
are seen to play an important role in describing the spin dependence of parton
distributions in the leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO)
approximations. In the polarized case, a convolution integral is derived in the
framework of the valon model. The Polarized valon distribution in a proton and
the polarized parton distributions inside the valon are necessary to obtain the
polarized parton distributions in a proton. Bernstein polynomial averages are
used to extract the unknown parameters of the polarized valon distributions by
fitting to the available experimental data. The predictions for the NLO
calculations of the polarized parton distributions and proton structure
functions are compared with the LO approximation. It is shown that the results
of the calculations for the proton structure function, , and its first
moment, , are in good agreement with the experimental data for a
range of values of . Finally the spin contribution of the valons to the
proton is calculated.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures. Published in Journal of High Energy Physics

Mitigating Cotton Revenue Risk Through Irrigation, Insurance, and Hedging
This study focuses on managing cotton production and marketing risks using combinations of irrigation levels, put options (as price insurance), and crop insurance. Stochastic cotton yields and prices are used to simulate a whole-farm financial statement for a 1,000 acre furrow irrigated cotton farm in the Texas Lower Rio Grande Valley under 16 combinations of risk management strategies. Analyses for risk-averse decision makers indicate that multiple irrigations are preferred. The benefits to purchasing put options increase with yields, as they are more beneficial when higher yields are expected from applying more irrigation applications. Crop insurance is strongly preferred at lower irrigation levels.cotton, crop insurance, irrigation, options, puts, risk, simulation, stochastic efficiency with respect to a function, Farm Management, Risk and Uncertainty, D81, Q12, Q15,
Hastings-Levitov aggregation in the small-particle limit
We establish some scaling limits for a model of planar aggregation. The model is described by the composition of a sequence of independent and identically distributed random conformal maps, each corresponding to the addition of one particle. We study the limit of small particle size and rapid aggregation. The process of growing clusters converges, in the sense of Caratheodory, to an inflating disc. A more refined analysis reveals, within the cluster, a tree structure of branching fingers, whose radial component increases deterministically with time. The arguments of any finite sample of fingers, tracked inwards, perform coalescing Brownian motions. The arguments of any finite sample of gaps between the fingers, tracked outwards, also perform coalescing Brownian motions. These properties are closely related to the evolution of harmonic measure on the boundary of the cluster, which is shown to converge to the Brownian web
Quantification of mutant huntingtin protein in cerebrospinal fluid from Huntington's disease patients.
Quantification of disease-associated proteins in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has been critical for the study and treatment of several neurodegenerative disorders; however, mutant huntingtin protein (mHTT), the cause of Huntington's disease (HD), is at very low levels in CSF and, to our knowledge, has never been measured previously
Equation of state and initial temperature of quark gluon plasma at RHIC
In gold-gold collisions of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) a
perfect fluid of quarks, sometimes called the strongly interacting quark gluon
plasma (sQGP) is created for an extremely short time. The time evolution of
this fluid can be described by hydrodynamical models. After expansion and
cooling, the freeze-out happens and hadrons are created. Their distribution
reveals information about the final state of the fluid. To investigate the time
evolution one needs to analyze penetrating probes, such as direct photon
observables. Transverse momentum distributions of low energy direct photons
were mesured in 2010 by PHENIX, while azimuthal asymmetry in 2011. These
measurements can be compared to hydrodynamics to determine the equation of
state and the initial temperature of sQGP. In this paper we analyze an 1+3
dimensional solution of relativistic hydrodynamics. We calculate momentum
distribution, azimuthal asymmetry and momentum correlations of direct photons.
Based on earlier fits to hadronic spectra, we compare photon calculations to
measurements to determine the equation of state and the initial temperature of
sQGP. We find that the initial temperature in the center of the fireball is
507+-12 MeV, while for the sound speed we get a speed of sound of 0.36+-0.02.
We also estimate a systematic error of these results. We find that the measured
azimuthal asymmetry is also not incompatible with this model, and predict a
photon source that is significantly larger in the out direction than in the
side direction.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures. This work was supported by the OTKA grant

Andreev Reflections in Micrometer-Scale Normal-Insulator-Superconductor Tunnel Junctions
Understanding the subgap behavior of Normal-Insulator-Superconductor (NIS)
tunnel junctions is important in order to be able to accurately model the
thermal properties of the junctions. Hekking and Nazarov developed a theory in
which NIS subgap current in thin-film structures can be modeled by multiple
Andreev reflections. In their theory, the current due to Andreev reflections
depends on the junction area and the junction resistance area product. We have
measured the current due to Andreev reflections in NIS tunnel junctions for
various junction sizes and junction resistance area products and found that the
multiple reflection theory is in agreement with our data
The hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum: an emerging public health risk in Australian tropical rainforests and Indigenous communities
Ancylostoma ceylanicum is the common hookworm of domestic dogs and cats throughout Asia, and is an emerging but little understood public health risk in tropical northern Australia. We investigated the prevalence of A. ceylanicum in soil and free-ranging domestic dogs at six rainforest locations in Far North Queensland that are Indigenous Australian communities and popular tourist attractions within the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. By combining PCR-based techniques with traditional methods of hookworm species identification, we found the prevalence of hookworm in Indigenous community dogs was high (96.3% and 91.9% from necropsy and faecal samples, respectively). The majority of these infections were A. caninum. We also observed, for the first time, the presence of A. ceylanicum infection in domestic dogs (21.7%) and soil (55.6%) in an Indigenous community. A. ceylanicum was present in soil samples from two out of the three popular tourist locations sampled. Our results contribute to the understanding of dogs as a public health risk to Indigenous communities and tourists in the Wet Tropics. Dog health needs to be more fully addressed as part of the Australian Government's commitments to "closing the gap" in chronic disease between Indigenous and other Australians, and encouraging tourism in similar locations
