    Nothing but Relativity, Redux

    Here we show how spacetime transformations consistent with the principle of relativity can be derived without an explicit assumption of the constancy of the speed of light, without gedanken experiments involving light rays, and without an assumption of differentiability, or even continuity, for the spacetime mapping. Hence, these historic results could have been derived centuries ago, even before the advent of calculus. This raises an interesting question: Could Galileo have derived Einsteinian relativity

    The 10Be contents of SNC meteorites

    Several authors have explored the possibility that the Shergottites, Nakhlites, and Chassigny (SNC) came from Mars. The spallogenic gas contents of the SNC meteorites have been used to: constrain the sizes of the SNC's during the last few million years; to establish groupings independent of the geochemical ones; and to estimate the likelihood of certain entries in the catalog of all conceivable passages from Mars to Earth. The particular shielding dependence of Be-10 makes the isotope a good probe of the irradiation conditions experienced by the SNC meteorites. The Be-10 contents of nine members of the group were measured using the technique of accelerator mass spectrometry. The Be-10 contents of Nakhla, Governador Valadares, Chassigny, and probably Lafayette, about 20 dpm/kg, exceed the values expected from irradiation of the surface of a large body. The Be-10 data therfore do not support scenario III of Bogard et al., one in which most of the Be-10 in the SNC meteorites would have formed on the Martian surface; they resemble rather the Be-10 contents found in many ordinary chondrites subjected to 4 Pi exposures. The uncertainties of the Be-10 contents lead to appreciable errors in the Be-10 ages, t(1) = -1/lambda ln(1 Be-10/Be-10). Nonetheless, the Be-10 ages are consistent with the Ne-21 ages calculated assuming conventional, small-body production rates and short terrestrial ages for the finds. It is believed that this concordance strengthens the case for at least 3 different irradiation ages for the SNC meteorites. Given the similar half-thicknesses of the Be-10 and Ne-21 production rates, the ratios of the Be-10 and Ne-21 contents do not appear consistent with common ages for any of the groups. In view of the general agreement between the Be-10 and Ne-21 ages it does not seem useful at this time to construct multiple-stage irradiation histories for the SNC meteorites

    Relativistic coupled-cluster single-double method applied to alkali-metal atoms

    A relativistic version of the coupled-cluster single-double (CCSD) method is developed for atoms with a single valence electron. In earlier work, a linearized version of the CCSD method (with extensions to include a dominant class of triple excitations) led to accurate predictions for energies, transition amplitudes, hyperfine constants, and other properties of monovalent atoms. Further progress in high-precision atomic structure calculations for heavy atoms calls for improvement of the linearized coupled-cluster methodology. In the present work, equations for the single and double excitation coefficients of the Dirac-Fock wave function, including all non-linear coupled-cluster terms that contribute at the single-double level are worked out. Contributions of the non-linear terms to energies, electric-dipole matrix elements, and hyperfine constants of low-lying states in alkali-metal atoms from Li to Cs are evaluated and the results are compared with other calculations and with precise experiments.Comment: 12 page

    The strong-CP question in SU(3)_c X SU(3)_L X U(1)_N models

    We analyze two recent models based on the gauge group SU(3)c×_c\timesSU(3)L×_L\timesU(1)N_N where each generation is not anomaly-free, but anomaly cancels when three generations are taken into account. We show that the most general Yukawa couplings of these models admit of a Peccei-Quinn symmetry. This symmetry can be extended to the entire Lagrangian by using extra fields in a very elegant way so that the resulting axion can be made invisible.Comment: Latex, 8 pages, no figure

    A Multi-Phase Transport Model for Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

    We describe in detail how the different components of a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model, that uses the Heavy Ion Jet Interaction Generator (HIJING) for generating the initial conditions, Zhang's Parton Cascade (ZPC) for modeling partonic scatterings, the Lund string fragmentation model or a quark coalescence model for hadronization, and A Relativistic Transport (ART) model for treating hadronic scatterings, are improved and combined to give a coherent description of the dynamics of relativistic heavy ion collisions. We also explain the way parameters in the model are determined, and discuss the sensitivity of predicted results to physical input in the model. Comparisons of these results to experimental data, mainly from heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), are then made in order to extract information on the properties of the hot dense matter formed in these collisions.Comment: 33 pages, 38 figures, revtex.     Analytical and experimental studies of impinging liquid jets

    Impinging injectors are a common type of injector used in liquid propellant rocket engines and are typically used in engines where both propellants are injected as a liquid, e.g., engines using LOX/hydrocarbon and storable propellant combinations. The present research program is focused on providing the requisite fundamental understanding associated with impinging jet injectors for the development of an advanced a priori combustion stability design analysis capability. To date, a systematic study of the atomization characteristics of impinging liquid jets under cold-flow conditions have been completed. Effects of orifice diameter, impingement angle, pre-impingement length, orifice length-to-diameter ratio, fabrication procedure, jet flow condition and jet velocity under steady and oscillating, and atmospheric- and high-pressure environments have been investigated. Results of these experimental studies have been compared to current models of sheet breakup and drop formation. In addition, the research findings have been scrutinized to provide a fundamental explanation for a proven empirical correlation used in the design of stable impinging injector-based rocket engines

    Approximate joint measurement of qubit observables through an Arthur-Kelly type model

    We consider joint measurement of two and three unsharp qubit observables through an Arthur-Kelly type joint measurement model for qubits. We investigate the effect of initial state of the detectors on the unsharpness of the measurement as well as the post-measurement state of the system. Particular emphasis is given on a physical understanding of the POVM to PVM transition in the model and entanglement between system and detectors.Two approaches for characterizing the unsharpness of the measurement and the resulting measurement uncertainty relations are considered.The corresponding measures of unsharpness are connected for the case where both the measurements are equally unsharp. The connection between the POVM elements and symmetries of the underlying Hamiltonian of the measurement interaction is made explicit and used to perform joint measurement in arbitrary directions. Finally in the case of three observables we derive a necessary condition for the approximate joint measurement and use it show the relative freedom available when the observables are non-orthogonal.Comment: 22 pages; Late

    Noise-robust method for image segmentation

    Segmentation of noisy images is one of the most challenging problems in image analysis and any improvement of segmentation methods can highly influence the performance of many image processing applications. In automated image segmentation, the fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering has been widely used because of its ability to model uncertainty within the data, applicability to multi-modal data and fairly robust behaviour. However, the standard FCM algorithm does not consider any information about the spatial linage context and is highly sensitive to noise and other imaging artefacts. Considering above mentioned problems, we developed a new FCM-based approach for the noise-robust fuzzy clustering and we present it in this paper. In this new iterative algorithm we incorporated both spatial and feature space information into the similarity measure and the membership function. We considered that spatial information depends on the relative location and features of the neighbouring pixels. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested on synthetic image with different noise levels and real images. Experimental quantitative and qualitative segmentation results show that our method efficiently preserves the homogeneity of the regions and is more robust to noise than other FCM-based methods

    Isotope thermometery in nuclear multifragmentation

    A systematic study of the effect of fragment-fragment interaction, quantum statistics, γ\gamma-feeding and collective flow is made in the extraction of the nuclear temperature from the double ratio of the isotopic yields in the statistical model of one-step (Prompt) multifragmentation. Temperature is also extracted from the isotope yield ratios generated in the sequential binary-decay model. Comparison of the thermodynamic temperature with the extracted temperatures for different isotope ratios show some anomaly in both models which is discussed in the context of experimentally measured caloric curves.Comment: uuencoded gzipped file containing 20 pages of text in REVTEX format and 12 figures (Postscript files).
