Sm-Nd isotopic systematics of the ancient Gneiss complex, southern Africa
In order to shed some new light on the question of the absolute and relative ages of the Ancient Gneiss Complex and Onverwacht Group, a Sm-Nd whole-rock and mineral isochron study of the AGC was begun. At this point, the whole-rock study of samples from the Bimodal Suite selected from those studied for their geochemical characteristics by Hunter et al., is completed. These results and their implications for the chronologic evolution of the Kaapvaal craton and the sources of these ancient rocks are discussed

Mode-locked Bloch oscillations in a ring cavity
We present a new technique for stabilizing and monitoring Bloch oscillations
of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice under the action of a constant
external force. In the proposed scheme, the atoms also interact with a
unidirectionally pumped optical ring cavity whose one arm is collinear with the
optical lattice. For weak collective coupling, Bloch oscillations dominate over
the collective atomic recoil lasing instability and develop a synchronized
regime in which the atoms periodically exchange momentum with the cavity field.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Laser velocimetry technique applied to the Langley 0.3 meter transonic cryogenic tunnel
A low power laser velocimeter operating in the forward scatter mode was used to measure free stream mean velocities in the Langley 0.3 Meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel. Velocity ranging from 51 to 235 m/s was measured. Measurements were obtained for a variety of nominal tunnel conditions: Mach numbers from 0.20 to 0.77, total temperatures from 100 to 250 K, and pressures from 101 to 152 kPa. Particles were not injected to augment the existing Mie scattering materials. Liquid nitrogen droplets were the existing liqht scattering material. Tunnel vibrations and thermal effects had no detrimental effects on the optical system
Stabilization of colloidal suspensions by means of highly-charged nanoparticles
We employ a novel Monte Carlo simulation scheme to elucidate the
stabilization of neutral colloidal microspheres by means of highly-charged
nanoparticles [V. Tohver et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 98, 8950
(2001)]. In accordance with the experimental observations, we find that small
nanoparticle concentrations induce an effective repulsion that prevents
gelation caused by the intrinsic van der Waals attraction between colloids.
Higher nanoparticle concentrations induce an attractive potential which is,
however, qualitatively different from the regular depletion attraction. We also
show how colloid-nanoparticle size asymmetry and nanoparticle charge can be

II Zwicky 23 and Family
II Zwicky 23 (UGC 3179) is a luminous, nearby compact narrow emission line
starburst galaxy with blue optical colors and strong emission lines. We present
a photometric and morphological study of II Zw 23 and its interacting
companions using data obtained with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope in Kitt Peak,
Arizona. II Zwicky 23 has a highly disturbed outer structure with long trails
of debris that may be feeding tidal dwarfs. Its central regions appear disky, a
structure that is consistent with the overall rotation pattern observed in the
H-alpha velocity field measured from Densepak observations obtained with WIYN.
We discuss the structure of II Zwicky 23 and its set of companions and possible

Electrophoresis of colloidal dispersions in the low-salt regime
We study the electrophoretic mobility of spherical charged colloids in a
low-salt suspension as a function of the colloidal concentration. Using an
effective particle charge and a reduced screening parameter, we map the data
for systems with different particle charges and sizes, including numerical
simulation data with full electrostatics and hydrodynamics and experimental
data for latex dispersions, on a single master curve. We observe two different
volume fraction-dependent regimes for the electrophoretic mobility that can be
explained in terms of the static properties of the ionic double layer.Comment: Substantially revised versio
Lensing Properties of Cored Galaxy Models
A method is developed to evaluate the magnifications of the images of
galaxies with lensing potentials stratified on similar concentric ellipses. A
simple contour integral is provided which enables the sums of the
magnifications of even parity or odd parity or the central image to be easily
calculated. The sums for pairs of images vary considerably with source
position, while the signed sums can be remarkably uniform inside the tangential
caustic in the absence of naked cusps. For a family of models in which the
potential is a power-law of the elliptic radius, the number of visible images
is found as a function of flattening, external shear and core radius. The
magnification of the central image depends on the core radius and the slope of
the potential. For typical source and lens redshifts, the missing central image
leads to strong constraints; the mass distribution in the lensing galaxy must
be nearly cusped, and the cusp must be isothermal or stronger. This is in
accord with the cuspy cores seen in high resolution photometry of nearby,
massive, early-type galaxies, which typically have the surface density falling
like distance^{-1.3} outside a break radius of a few hundred parsecs. Cuspy
cores by themselves can provide an explanation of the missing central images.
Dark matter at large radii may alter the slope of the projected density;
provided the slope remains isothermal or steeper and the break radius remains
small, then the central image remains unobservable. The sensitivity of the
radio maps must be increased fifty-fold to find the central images in
