Wind tunnel tests of high-lift systems for advanced transports using high-aspect-ratio supercritical wings
The wind tunnel testing of an advanced technology high lift system for a wide body and a narrow body transport incorporating high aspect ratio supercritical wings is described. This testing has added to the very limited low speed high Reynolds number data base for this class or aircraft. The experimental results include the effects on low speed aerodynamic characteristics of various leading and trailing edge devices, nacelles and pylons, ailerons, and spoilers, and the effects of Mach and Reynolds numbers
Flat slice Hamiltonian formalism for dynamical black holes
We give a Hamiltonian analysis of the asymptotically flat spherically
symmetric system of gravity coupled to a scalar field. This 1+1 dimensional
field theory may be viewed as the "standard model" for studying black hole
physics. Our analysis is adapted to the flat slice Painleve-Gullstrand
coordinates. We give a Hamiltonian action principle for this system, which
yields an asymptotic mass formula. We then perform a time gauge fixing that
gives a Hamiltonian as the integral of a local density. The Hamiltonian takes a
relatively simple form compared to earlier work in Schwarzschild gauge, and
therefore provides a setting amenable to full quantisation.Comment: 11 pages, refererences added, discussions clarified, version to

'It's a Form of Freedom': The experiences of people with disabilities within equestrian sport
This paper explores the embodied, gendered experiences of disabled horseâriders. Drawing on data from five inâdepth interviews with paradressage riders, the ways in which their involvement in elite disability sport impacts upon their sense of identity and confidence are explored, as well as the considerable health and social benefits that this involvement brings. Social models of disability are employed and the shortcomings of such models, when applied to disability sport, are highlighted. The data presented here demonstrates the necessity of seeing disability sport as an embodied experience and acknowledging the importance of impairment to the experiences of disabled athletes. Living within an impaired body is also a gendered experience and the implications of this when applied to elite disability sport are considered
Metal-insulator transition in EuO
It is shown that the spectacular metal-insulator transition in Eu-rich EuO
can be simulated within an extended Kondo lattice model. The different orders
of magnitude of the jump in resistivity in dependence on the concentration of
oxygen vacancies as well as the low-temperature resistance minimum in
high-resistivity samples are reproduced quantitatively. The huge colossal
magnetoresistance (CMR) is calculated and discussed
Electron Entanglement via a Quantum Dot
This Letter presents a method of electron entanglement generation. The system
under consideration is a single-level quantum dot with one input and two output
leads. The leads are arranged such that the dot is empty, single electron
tunneling is suppressed by energy conservation, and two-electron virtual
co-tunneling is allowed. This yields a pure, non-local spin-singlet state at
the output leads. Coulomb interaction is the nonlinearity essential for
entanglement generation, and, in its absence, the singlet state vanishes. This
type of electron entanglement is a four-wave mixing process analogous to the
photon entanglement generated by a Chi-3 parametric amplifier.Comment: 4 page
Large-scale structure in a new deep IRAS galaxy redshift survey
We present here the first results from two recently completed, fully sampled redshift surveys comprising 3703 IRAS Faint Source Survey (FSS) galaxies. An unbiased counts-in-cells analysis finds a clustering strength in broad agreement with other recent redshift surveys and at odds with the standard cold dark matter model. We combine our data with those from the QDOT and 1.2 Jy surveys, producing a single estimate of the IRAS galaxy clustering strength. We compare the data with the power spectrum derived from a mixed dark matter universe. Direct comparison of the clustering strength seen in the IRAS samples with that seen in the APM-Stromlo survey suggests b_O/b_I=1.20+/-0.05 assuming a linear, scale independent biasing. We also perform a cell by cell comparison of our FSS-z sample with galaxies from the first CfA slice, testing the viability of a linear-biasing scheme linking the two. We are able to rule out models in which the FSS-z galaxies identically trace the CfA galaxies on scales 5-20h^{-1}Mpc. On scales of 5 and 10h^{-1}Mpc no linear-biasing model can be found relating the two samples. We argue that this result is expected since the CfA sample includes more elliptical galaxies which have different clustering properties from spirals. On scales of 20h^{-1}Mpc no linear-biasing model with b_O/b_I < 1.70 is acceptable. When comparing the FSS-z galaxies to the CfA spirals, however, the two populations trace the same structures within our uncertaintie
The Impact of Atmospheric Fluctuations on Degree-scale Imaging of the Cosmic Microwave Background
Fluctuations in the brightness of the Earth's atmosphere originating from
water vapor are an important source of noise for ground-based instruments
attempting to measure anisotropy in the Cosmic Microwave Background. This paper
presents a model for the atmospheric fluctuations and derives simple
expressions to predict the contribution of the atmosphere to experimental
measurements. Data from the South Pole and from the Atacama Desert in Chile,
two of the driest places on Earth, are used to assess the level of fluctuations
at each site.Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, appears in The Astrophysical Journa
Coincident electron channeling and cathodoluminescence studies of threading dislocations in GaN
We combine two scanning electron microscopy techniques to investigate the influence of dislocations on the light emission from nitride semiconductors. Combining electron channeling contrast imaging and cathodoluminescence imaging enables both the structural and luminescence properties of a sample to be investigated without structural damage to the sample. The electron channeling contrast image is very sensitive to distortions of the crystal lattice, resulting in individual threading dislocations appearing as spots with blackâwhite contrast. Dislocations giving rise to nonradiative recombination are observed as black spots in the cathodoluminescence image. Comparison of the images from exactly the same micron-scale region of a sample demonstrates a one-to-one correlation between the presence of single threading dislocations and resolved dark spots in the cathodoluminescence image. In addition, we have also obtained an atomic force microscopy image from the same region of the sample, which confirms that both pure edge dislocations and those with a screw component (i.e., screw and mixed dislocations) act as nonradiative recombination centers for the Si-doped c-plane GaN thin film investigated
