An evolved cognitive bias for social norms
Social norms are a widely used concept for explaining human behavior, but there are few studies exploring how we cognitively utilize them. We incorporate here an evolutionary approach to studying social norms, predicting that if norms have been critical to biological fitness, then individuals should have adaptive mechanisms to conform to, and avoid violating, norms. A cognitive bias toward norms is one specific means by which individuals could achieve this. To test this, we assessed whether individuals have greater recall for normative information than for nonnormative information. Three experiments were performed in which participants read a text and were then tested on their recall of behavioral content. The data suggest that individuals have superior recall for normative social information and that performance is not related to rated importance. We discuss how such a cognitive bias may ontogenetically develop and identify possible hypotheses that distinguish between alternative explanatory accounts for social norms
Administrative Performance of “No-Fault” Compensation for Medical Injury
No-fault is the leading alternative to traditional liability systems for resolving medically caused injuries, and policy interest in such reform reflects numerous concerns with the traditional tort system as it operates in the medical field through malpractice insurance. The administrative experience of the Florida and Virginia no-fault programs is examined
Investigation of refracting flows for acoustic suppression
An experimental investigation to determine the possibility of using refracting flows for the suppression of aircraft inlet noise is described. Observations of wave refraction in duct flows and measurements of the increase in effectiveness of acoustic linings due to refraction have suggested methods for the design of engine inlet ducts which can either suppress noise internally or direct it to where it causes less annoyance
John 14:17 and the Holy Spirit in the Gospel of John
This thesis examines John 14:17, along with other passages in John, and identifies whether or not the disciples were indwelled before Jesus’ glorification or after his glorification. It does this through defining of Holy Spirit terms, a study on the Holy Spirit in John, and word studies on different words throughout John. The conclusion of the paper shows that the Holy Spirit could not indwell the disciples before the glorification of Jesus and gives evidence to show why this could not occur
Newport living : an affordable mixed-use community in the heart of a city
Many cities in the United States are in need of redeveloped urban spaces to reverse the decline of the city and its neighborhoods. Urban redevelopment can help to reconnect communities and draw more people downtown rather than to the suburbs, while saving rural areas for natural resources. Redeveloping these spaces and providing sustainable affordable housing will rejuvenate neighborhoods to include residents on all economic levels.Brownfields have become a major crisis in the urban fabric of American cities. These areas are frequently eyesores that are contaminated by waste and therefore a safety hazard to the public. After intense clean-up and revitalization these spaces can become engaging attractions that include amenities and places to live and work. After a Brownfield or dilapidated neighborhood has been revitalized, it is important that its new use will be conducive to the context of the neighborhood. The amenities, including the scale of the development and affordability of housing and services within the development, are important factors to consider when planning for a new community. The new and existing neighborhoods must correlate together to create an effective patch in the urban fabric. The greater Cincinnati area lacks affordable urban communities that are in good working and living conditions. This study explored the possibilities for and impacts of the development of a sustainable urban mixed-use community to draw all types of people to downtown areas rather than to suburbs and contributing to urban sprawl. Its particular focus is providing affordable housing in a new development.College of Architecture and PlanningTitle from signature sheet: Newport living : an affordable mixed-use community in the heart of the city.Thesis (B.L.A.
Juries and Justice: Are Malpractice and Other Personal Injuries Created Equal?
A study analyzed the civil jury system and the difference in personal injury awards between automobile and deep-pocket defendants, especially in medical malpractice cases. Six conclusions were reached, including the finding that juries sometimes respond emotionally and award some objectively similar cases higher damages than others
