    Various Correlations between the H-Index and Citation Rate (CPP) in Neuroscience and Quantum Physics: New Findings

    Traditional bibliometric indicators are only partially suitable for evaluating the scientific achievements of individual people. They are either notdefinitive or they are too complicated to use due to technical and methodological difficulties. There is still no definite evidence for thecorrelation between the citation rate (CPP) and the H-Index. In order to obtain a reliable assessment of what the relation is between the H-Index andthe citation rate, we performed a study on 30 relevant scientists from the disciplines of "particle physics" and "neurology". The foregoing discussionson the different correlations revealed that the form and degree of correlation do not just vary considerably between the individual comparisons but alsoamongst the disciplines. In both disciplines, the correlation between the citation rate CPP and the H-Index was relatively low. We also found varyingdegrees of correlation here

    Is This a Joke? Detecting Humor in Spanish Tweets

    While humor has been historically studied from a psychological, cognitive and linguistic standpoint, its study from a computational perspective is an area yet to be explored in Computational Linguistics. There exist some previous works, but a characterization of humor that allows its automatic recognition and generation is far from being specified. In this work we build a crowdsourced corpus of labeled tweets, annotated according to its humor value, letting the annotators subjectively decide which are humorous. A humor classifier for Spanish tweets is assembled based on supervised learning, reaching a precision of 84% and a recall of 69%.Comment: Preprint version, without referra

    Fundamental limitations for quantum and nano thermodynamics

    The relationship between thermodynamics and statistical physics is valid in the thermodynamic limit - when the number of particles becomes very large. Here, we study thermodynamics in the opposite regime - at both the nano scale, and when quantum effects become important. Applying results from quantum information theory we construct a theory of thermodynamics in these limits. We derive general criteria for thermodynamical state transformations, and as special cases, find two free energies: one that quantifies the deterministically extractable work from a small system in contact with a heat bath, and the other that quantifies the reverse process. We find that there are fundamental limitations on work extraction from nonequilibrium states, owing to finite size effects and quantum coherences. This implies that thermodynamical transitions are generically irreversible at this scale. As one application of these methods, we analyse the efficiency of small heat engines and find that they are irreversible during the adiabatic stages of the cycle.Comment: Final, published versio

    Automatic medical encoding with SNOMED categories

    BACKGROUND: In this paper, we describe the design and preliminary evaluation of a new type of tools to speed up the encoding of episodes of care using the SNOMED CT terminology. METHODS: The proposed system can be used either as a search tool to browse the terminology or as a categorization tool to support automatic annotation of textual contents with SNOMED concepts. The general strategy is similar for both tools and is based on the fusion of two complementary retrieval strategies with thesaural resources. The first classification module uses a traditional vector-space retrieval engine which has been fine-tuned for the task, while the second classifier is based on regular variations of the term list. For evaluating the system, we use a sample of MEDLINE. SNOMED CT categories have been restricted to Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) using the SNOMED-MeSH mapping provided by the UMLS (version 2006). RESULTS: Consistent with previous investigations applied on biomedical terminologies, our results show that performances of the hybrid system are significantly improved as compared to each single module. For top returned concepts, a precision at high ranks (P0) of more than 80% is observed. In addition, a manual and qualitative evaluation on a dozen of MEDLINE abstracts suggests that SNOMED CT could represent an improvement compared to existing medical terminologies such as MeSH. CONCLUSION: Although the precision of the SNOMED categorizer seems sufficient to help professional encoders, it is concluded that clinical benchmarks as well as usability studies are needed to assess the impact of our SNOMED encoding method in real settings.     Migraine and Happiness

    Objective: To investigate the association between happiness and migraine. Background: Contemporary operationalizations of happiness include the prevailing positive over negative affect and the satisfaction with life. Generally, extreme events and circumstances influence happiness only temporarily. However, how does periodic cycling between being relatively healthy and relatively disabled-as in migraineurs-affect happiness? Migraine is a primary headache disorder, in which headache attacks intermittently interfere with normal living and cause a significant personal, societal, and potentially irreversible disease burden. Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, migraineurs completed the satisfaction with life scale (SWLS), the Patient Health Questionnaire, and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale and reported their headache frequency as well as recent changes in that frequency. Furthermore, participants answered a free text question on how to remain happy despite migraine attacks. We built a regression model with the SWLS score as the dependent variable. Results: Seventy participants completed the questionnaire. The regression model revealed that happiness increases with headache days, and subsequent analysis showed a U-shaped relationship between headache frequency and happiness. The participants' advice on remaining happy focused on upvaluing the pain-free time or relieving the attacks themselves. The latter was increasingly common with longer disease durations. Conclusions: Both high and low headache frequencies facilitate adaptation to the disorder, while intermediate frequencies resulted in lower life satisfaction. The nonlinear relationship between happiness and headache days may be due to "hedonic habituation" and implies that headache calendars do not necessarily correctly reflect patients' difficulty to feel well despite the disorder. Many patients advised other migraineurs to increase happiness by enjoying pain-free time. However, with increasing disease duration, patients' recommendations focused on coping with attacks.     Integrating protein-protein interactions and text mining for protein function prediction

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Functional annotation of proteins remains a challenging task. Currently the scientific literature serves as the main source for yet uncurated functional annotations, but curation work is slow and expensive. Automatic techniques that support this work are still lacking reliability. We developed a method to identify conserved protein interaction graphs and to predict missing protein functions from orthologs in these graphs. To enhance the precision of the results, we furthermore implemented a procedure that validates all predictions based on findings reported in the literature.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using this procedure, more than 80% of the GO annotations for proteins with highly conserved orthologs that are available in UniProtKb/Swiss-Prot could be verified automatically. For a subset of proteins we predicted new GO annotations that were not available in UniProtKb/Swiss-Prot. All predictions were correct (100% precision) according to the verifications from a trained curator.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our method of integrating CCSs and literature mining is thus a highly reliable approach to predict GO annotations for weakly characterized proteins with orthologs.</p

    From Aristotle to Arendt : a phenomenological exploration of forms of knowledge and practice in the context of child protection social work in the UK

    This paper attempts to explore the relationship between different forms of knowledge and the kinds of activity that arise from them within child protection social work practice. The argument that social work is more than either ‘science’ or ‘art’ but distinctly ‘practice’ is put through a historical description of the development of Aristotle’s views of the forms of knowledge and Hannah Arendt’s later conceptualisations as detailed in The Human Condition (1958). The paper supports Arendt’s privileging of Praxis over Theoria within social work and further draws upon Arendt’s distinctions between Labour, Work and Action to delineate between different forms of social work activity. The author highlights dangers in social work relying too heavily on technical knowledge and the use of theory as a tool in seeking to understand and engage with the people it serves and stresses the importance of a phenomenological approach to research and practice as a valid, embodied form of knowledge. The argument further explores the constructions of service users that potentially arise from different forms of social work activity and cautions against over-prescriptive use of ‘outcomes’ based practice that may reduce the people who use services to products or consumables. The author concludes that social work action inevitably involves trying to understand humans in a complex and dynamic way that requires engagement and to seek new meanings for individual humans

    Differentiation potential of STRO-1+ dental pulp stem cells changes during cell passaging

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) can be driven into odontoblast, osteoblast, and chondrocyte lineages in different inductive media. However, the differentiation potential of naive DPSCs after serial passaging in the routine culture system has not been fully elucidated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>DPSCs were isolated from human/rat dental pulps by the magnetic activated cell sorting based on STRO-1 expression, cultured and passaged in the conventional culture media. The biological features of STRO-1<sup>+ </sup>DPSCs at the 1<sup>st </sup>and 9<sup>th </sup>passages were investigated. During the long-term passage, the proliferation ability of human STRO-1<sup>+ </sup>DPSCs was downregulated as indicated by the growth kinetics. When compared with STRO-1<sup>+ </sup>DPSCs at the 1<sup>st </sup>passage (DPSC-P1), the expression of mature osteoblast-specific genes/proteins (alkaline phosphatase, bone sialoprotein, osterix, and osteopontin), odontoblast-specific gene/protein (dentin sialophosphoprotein and dentin sialoprotein), and chondrocyte-specific gene/protein (type II collagen) was significantly upregulated in human STRO-1<sup>+ </sup>DPSCs at the 9<sup>th </sup>passage (DPSC-P9). Furthermore, human DPSC-P9 cells in the mineralization-inducing media presented higher levels of alkaline phosphatase at day 3 and day 7 respectively, and produced more mineralized matrix than DPSC-P9 cells at day 14. <it>In vivo </it>transplantation results showed that rat DPSC-P1 cell pellets developed into dentin, bone and cartilage structures respectively, while DPSC-P9 cells can only generate bone tissues.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These findings suggest that STRO-1<sup>+ </sup>DPSCs consist of several interrelated subpopulations which can spontaneously differentiate into odontoblasts, osteoblasts, and chondrocytes. The differentiation capacity of these DPSCs changes during cell passaging, and DPSCs at the 9<sup>th </sup>passage restrict their differentiation potential to the osteoblast lineage <it>in vivo</it>.</p

    An exploration of the use of infant observation methods to research the identities of severely learning disabled adolescents and to enhance relationship-based practice for professional social work practice

    This paper considers how infant observation methods may be adapted to explore and research the identities of severely learning disabled adolescents, a group of young people whose experiences are poorly represented in the literature. Through focusing on emotion and relationship, this ‘practice-near’ research method also offers a way for social workers to develop their reflective capacity in relation to the often hidden, uncomfortable emotions aroused by experiencing impairment and difference, but without the defences usually involved in assuming the professional role. The importance of taking time to get on a disabled child’s ‘wavelength’ is illustrated through extracts from the research which show how a young person’s agency and identity can be appreciated. The method also has the potential to develop social workers’ awareness of the powerful undercurrent of emotions apparent at times within families of severely disabled young people and tentative suggestions are made about the projective processes and hidden hostilities at work within one of the families observed as part of the research project. Professionals may be able to use this knowledge to become resilient and reflective practitioners and the observation method itself has something to offer by way of a containing experience for families
