    Effects of flight on noise radiated from convected ring sources in coaxial dual flow. Part 2: The noise from heated jets

    The effects of flight on noise from heated jets are discussed. The effects of the additionally, extraneously-generated dipole and simple source terms which arise as a result of the density gradients across the fluid interfaces were incorporated. The coaxial flows with inverted profiles are shown to be quieter than the conventional profiles; however, the benefit of noise reduction at higher outer-to-inner area ratios is totally offset as the inverted profile incurs a significant massloss and thrust-loss. Amongst all the possible coaxial configurations when on of the coaxial streams is heated-conventional profile (CP), inverted profile (IP) and the variable stream control engine (VSCE) cycle-and at constant massflow and thrust, a VSCE-cycle is the most desirable and the best possible engine cycle inasmuch as it provides over more than 18.0 dB reduction in SPL (as compared against noise from a CP-cycle) at all angles, both statically and in flight, for area ratios Sigma 0.25

    The effects of flight on sound radiated from embedded, uncorrelated ring sources convecting along the midst of the primary and the secondary streams of a coaxial dual flow which emerges from a moving nozzle into the ambience are studied. Cold jets are examined. The problem is posed as a double vortex-sheet flow model which involves deliberate suppression of inherent instabilities of the flow and is formulated, as a linear problem, in terms of the combined contributions of two independent uncorrelated quadrupole-type ring sources, the one convecting in the primary flow representing the sources generated due to the interaction at the primary/secondary interface and the other convecting in the secondary flow representing the sources generated due to the interaction at the secondary/ambient interface. The analysis shows that the effects of flight induce (1) amplication of noise in the forward quadrant, (2) reduction of noise in the aft quadrant and (3) absolutely no impact on radiation of noise at Theta = 90 deg to the jet axis

    Optimal bidding strategies for simultaneous Vickrey auctions with perfect substitutes

    In this paper, we derive optimal bidding strategies for a global bidder who participates in multiple, simultaneous second-price auctions with perfect substitutes. We first consider a model where all other bidders are local and participate in a single auction. For this case, we prove that, assuming free disposal, the global bidder should always place non-zero bids in all available auctions, irrespective of the local bidders’ valuation distribution. Furthermore, for nondecreasing valuation distributions, we prove that the problem of finding the optimal bids reduces to two dimensions. These results hold both in the case where the number of local bidders is known and when this number is determined by a Poisson distribution. In addition, by combining analytical and simulation results, we demonstrate that similar results hold in the case of several global bidders, provided that the market consists of both global and local bidders. Finally, we address the efficiency of the overall market, and show that information about the number of local bidders is an important determinant for the way in which a global bidder affects efficiency

    Sellers Competing for Buyers in Online Markets

    We consider competition between sellers offering similar items in concurrent online auctions, where each seller must set its individual auction parameters (such as the reserve price) in such a way as to attract buyers. We show that there exists a pure Nash equilibrium in the case of two sellers with asymmetric production costs. In addition, we show that, rather than setting a reserve price, a seller can further improve its utility by shill bidding (i.e., pretending to be a buyer in order to bid in its own auction). But, using an evolutionary simulation, we show that this shill bidding introduces inefficiencies within the market. However, we then go on to show that these inefficiencies can be reduced when the mediating auction institution uses appropriate auction fees that deter sellers from submitting shill bids

    An investigation on texture property correlation in annealed CP-Titanium

    Rapid industrial development and advances in the fields of engineering and related technologies during the last five decades have led to the extensive use of traditional metals and their alloy counterparts. Ti is one such metal which has gained popularity in the aerospace and defence related applications due to its wide range of mechanical properties like excellent specific strength , stiffness, corrosion and erosion resistance, fracture toughness and capability to withstand significant temperature variations. The present investigation is a step at correlating the crystallographic orientation and mechanical properties of commercially pure Ti (CP-Ti). Annealed CP-Ti specimens were prepared along the rolling direction, perpendicular to the rolling direction and 45o to the rolling direction. The specimens were then deformed to failure under uniaxial tension test in tensile test. Crystallographic textures of the specimens were measured before and after tensile deformation. Correlation of texture and mechanical properties was investigated. Subsequently, hardness of different grains/orientations of CP-Ti was measured through nano-indentation, grain average misorientation, elastic stiffness and Taylor factor measurement
