Influences of Anthropogenic Noise on Flight Initiation Distance, Foraging Behavior, And Feeder Community Structure of Wild Birds
Throughout the world, birds represent the primary type of wildlife that people experience on a daily basis. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that alterations to the acoustic environment can negatively affect birds as well as humans in a variety of ways, and altered acoustics from noise pollution has the potential to influence human interactions with wild birds. In this thesis, I investigated how anthropogenic noise impacts daily behavior as well as community structure of wild birds. In the first component of this thesis, I assessed the distance at which a bird initiates flight or escape behavior (i.e., flight initiation distance or FID) in varying acoustic conditions. I surveyed 12 songbird species from three foraging guilds, ground foragers, canopy gleaners, and hawking flycatchers, and I predicted FIDs to decrease, remain the same, and increase with noise exposure, respectively. Contrary to expectations, the canopy gleaning and flycatching guilds exhibited mixed responses, with some species exhibiting unchanged FIDs with noise while others exhibited increased FIDs with noise. However, FIDs of all ground foraging species and one canopy gleaner decreased with noise levels. In the second component, I examined the feeding of wild birds, an increasingly popular recreational activity throughout North America that promotes increased sense of wellbeing by connecting people with wildlife and nature. I tested how experimental noise influences abundance, species richness, community structure and foraging behavior of songbirds at maintained bird feeders. By measuring activity levels of all species that utilized the feeders exposed to intervals of quiet and noisy conditions, I found noise to be a significant predictor of community turnover. Specifically, noise exposure resulted in increased feeder activity for two species, and decreased activity for one species. I also confirmed previous research conducted in the laboratory indicating white-crowned sparrows decrease their foraging rate under noise conditions, presumably as a trade off with visual vigilance. Considering the interactions of humans and wild birds, the results from my two thesis components indicate that the acoustic environment can play a role in how species of different foraging guilds respond to birdwatchers and what species visit bird feeders
Hybrid Search: Effectively Combining Keywords and Semantic Searches
This paper describes hybrid search, a search method supporting both document and knowledge retrieval via the flexible combination of ontologybased search and keyword-based matching. Hybrid search smoothly copes with
lack of semantic coverage of document content, which is one of the main limitations of current semantic search methods. In this paper we define hybrid search formally, discuss its compatibility with the current semantic trends and present a reference implementation: K-Search. We then show how the method outperforms both keyword-based search and pure semantic search in terms of precision and recall in a set of experiments performed on a collection of about 18.000 technical documents. Experiments carried out with professional users show that users understand the paradigm and consider it very powerful and reliable. K-Search has been ported to two applications released at Rolls-Royce

Identification of onosma visianii roots extract and purified shikonin derivatives as potential acaricidal agents against tetranychus urticae
There is an increasing need for the discovery of reliable and eco-friendly pesticides and natural plant-derived products may play a crucial role as source of new active compounds. In this research, a lipophilic extract of Onosma visianii roots extract containing 12% of shikonin derivatives demonstrated significant toxicity and inhibition of oviposition against Tetranychus urticae mites. Extensive chromatographic separation allowed the isolation of 11 naphthoquinone derivatives that were identified by spectral techniques and were tested against Tetranychus urticae. All the isolated compounds presented effects against the considered mite and isobutylshikonin (1) and isovalerylshikonin (2) were the most active, being valuable model compounds for the study of new anti-mite agents
Arthropod-Borne Disease Control at a Glance: What's New on Drug Development?
Discovering and validating effective drugs to manage arthropod-borne diseases (ABD) is a timely and important research challenge with major impacts on real-world control programs at the time of quick resistance development in the targeted pathogens. This editorial highlights major research advances in the development of drugs for the control of vector-borne diseases, with a significant focus on malaria, Chagas disease, dengue, human African trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, and Zika. Broad reviews providing new insights on ABD recently published in Molecules have also been covered in "The Editors' pick" section

Colloidal CuFeS2 Nanocrystals: Intermediate Fe d-Band Leads to High Photothermal Conversion Efficiency
We describe the colloidal hot-injection synthesis of phase-pure nanocrystals
(NCs) of a highly abundant mineral, chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). Absorption bands
centered at around 480 and 950 nm, spanning almost the entire visible and near
infrared regions, encompass their optical extinction characteristics. These
peaks are ascribable to electronic transitions from the valence band (VB) to
the empty intermediate band (IB), located in the fundamental gap and mainly
composed of Fe 3d orbitals. Laser-irradiation (at 808 nm) of an aqueous
suspension of CuFeS2 NCs exhibited significant heating, with a photothermal
conversion efficiency of 49%. Such efficient heating is ascribable to the
carrier relaxation within the broad IB band (owing to the indirect VB-IB gap),
as corroborated by transient absorption measurements. The intense absorption
and high photothermal transduction efficiency (PTE) of these NCs in the
so-called biological window (650-900 nm) makes them suitable for photothermal
therapy as demonstrated by tumor cell annihilation upon laser irradiation. The
otherwise harmless nature of these NCs in dark conditions was confirmed by in
vitro toxicity tests on two different cell lines. The presence of the deep Fe
levels constituting the IB is the origin of such enhanced PTE, which can be

Cross-lingual document retrieval categorisation and navigation based on distributed services
The widespread use of the Internet across countries has increased the need for access to document collections
that are often written in languages different from a user’s native language. In this paper we describe Clarity, a
Cross Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) system for English, Finnish, Swedish, Latvian and Lithuanian.
Clarity is a fully-fledged retrieval system that supports the user during the whole process of query formulation,
text retrieval and document browsing. We address four of the major aspects of Clarity: (i) the user-driven
methodology that formed the basis for the iterative design cycle and framework in the project, (ii) the system
architecture that was developed to support the interaction and coordination of Clarity’s distributed services, (iii)
the data resources and methods for query translation, and (iv) the support for Baltic languages. Clarity is an
example of a distributed CLIR system built with minimal translation resources and, to our knowledge, the only
such system that currently supports Baltic languages
Is the choice of statistical model relevant in the cost estimation of patients with chronic diseases? An empirical approach from the Piedmont Diabetes Registry.
BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases impose large economic burdens. Cost analysis is not straightforward, particularly when the goal is to relate costs to specific patterns of covariates, and to compare costs between diseased and healthy populations. Using different statistical methods this study describes the impact on results and conclusions of analyzing health care costs in a population with diabetes. METHODS: Direct health care costs of people living in Turin were estimated from administrative databases of the Regional Health System. Patients with diabetes were identified through the Piedmont Diabetes Registry. The effect of diabetes on mean annual expenditure was analyzed using the following multivariable models: 1) an ordinary least squares regression (OLS); 2) a lognormal linear regression model; 3) a generalized linear model (GLM) with gamma distribution. Presence of zero cost observation was handled by means of a two part model. RESULTS: The OLS provides the effect of covariates in terms of absolute additive costs due to the presence of diabetes (€ 1,832). Lognormal and GLM provide relative estimates of the effect: the cost for diabetes would be six fold that for non diabetes patients calculated with the lognormal. The same data give a 2.6-fold increase if calculated with the GLM. Different methods provide quite different estimated costs for patients with and without diabetes, and different costs ratios between them, ranging from 3.2 to 5.6. CONCLUSIONS: Costs estimates of a chronic disease vary considerably depending on the statistical method employed; therefore a careful choice of methods to analyze data is required before inferring results
Report of the QCD Tools Working Group
We report on the activities of the ``QCD Tools for heavy flavors and new
physics searches'' working group of the Run II Workshop on QCD and Weak Bosons.
The contributions cover the topics of improved parton showering and comparisons
of Monte Carlo programs and resummation calculations, recent developments in
Pythia, the methodology of measuring backgrounds to new physics searches,
variable flavor number schemes for heavy quark electro-production, the
underlying event in hard scattering processes, and the Monte Carlo MCFM for NLO
