Lowest Landau Level vortex structure of a Bose-Einstein condensate rotating in a harmonic plus quartic trap

We investigate the vortex patterns appearing in a two-dimensional annular Bose-Einstein condensate rotating in a quadratic plus quartic confining potential. We show that in the limit of small anharmonicity the Gross-Pitaevskii energy can be minimized amongst the Lowest Landau Level wave functions and use this particular form to get theoretical results in the spirit of [A. Aftalion X. Blanc F. Nier, Phys. Rev. A 73, 011601(R) (2006)]. In particular, we show that the vortex pattern is infinite but not uniform. We also compute numerically the complete vortex structure: it is an Abrikosov lattice strongly distorted near the edges of the condensate with multiply quantized vortices appearing at the center of the trap.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

Antioxidant activity of aminodiarylamines in the thieno[3,2-b]pyridine series: radical scavenging activity, lipid peroxidation inhibition and redox profile

The antioxidant activity of the aminodi(hetero)arylamines, prepared by C-N coupling of the methyl 3-aminothieno[3,2-b]pyridine-2-carboxylate with bromonitrobenzenes and further reduction of the obtained nitro compounds, was evaluated by chemical, biochemical and electrochemical assays. The aminodi(hetero)arylamine with the amino group ortho to the NH and a methoxy group in para, was the most efficient in radical scavenging activity (RSA, 63 µM) and reducing power (RP, 33 µM), while the aminodiarylamine with the amino group in para to the NH, gave the best results in β-carotene-linoleate system (41 µM) and inhibition of formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in porcine brain cells homogenates (7 µM), with EC50 values even lower than those obtained for the standard trolox. This diarylamine also presented the lowest oxidation potential, lower than the one of trolox, and the highest antioxidant power in the electrochemical assays. The para substitution with an amino group enables higher antioxidant potential. The authors are grateful to FCT and FEDER (European Fund for Regional Development)-COMPETE/QREN/EU for financial support through the research unities PEst-C/QUI/UI686/2011 and PEst-OE/AGR/UI0690/2011, the research project PTDC/QUI-QUI/111060/2009 and the post-Doctoral grant attributed to R.C.C. Beyond the average: Detecting global singular nodes from local features in complex networks

Deviations from the average can provide valuable insights about the organization of natural systems. The present article extends this important principle to the systematic identification and analysis of singular motifs in complex networks. Six measurements quantifying different and complementary features of the connectivity around each node of a network were calculated, and multivariate statistical methods applied to identify singular nodes. The potential of the presented concepts and methodology was illustrated with respect to different types of complex real-world networks, namely the US air transportation network, the protein-protein interactions of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the Roget thesaurus networks. The obtained singular motifs possessed unique functional roles in the networks. Three classic theoretical network models were also investigated, with the Barab\'asi-Albert model resulting in singular motifs corresponding to hubs, confirming the potential of the approach. Interestingly, the number of different types of singular node motifs as well as the number of their instances were found to be considerably higher in the real-world networks than in any of the benchmark networks

Conditional generation of arbitrary multimode entangled states of light with linear optics

We propose a universal scheme for the probabilistic generation of an arbitrary multimode entangled state of light with finite expansion in Fock basis. The suggested setup involves passive linear optics, single photon sources, strong coherent laser beams, and photodetectors with single-photon resolution. The efficiency of this setup may be greatly enhanced if, in addition, a quantum memory is available.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

Characterization of complex networks: A survey of measurements

Each complex network (or class of networks) presents specific topological features which characterize its connectivity and highly influence the dynamics of processes executed on the network. The analysis, discrimination, and synthesis of complex networks therefore rely on the use of measurements capable of expressing the most relevant topological features. This article presents a survey of such measurements. It includes general considerations about complex network characterization, a brief review of the principal models, and the presentation of the main existing measurements. Important related issues covered in this work comprise the representation of the evolution of complex networks in terms of trajectories in several measurement spaces, the analysis of the correlations between some of the most traditional measurements, perturbation analysis, as well as the use of multivariate statistics for feature selection and network classification. Depending on the network and the analysis task one has in mind, a specific set of features may be chosen. It is hoped that the present survey will help the proper application and interpretation of measurements.Comment: A working manuscript with 78 pages, 32 figures. Lower birth weight and increased body fat at school age in children prenatally exposed to modern pesticides: a prospective study

Background: Endocrine disrupting chemicals have been hypothesized to play a role in the obesity epidemic. Long-term effects of prenatal exposure to non-persistent pesticides on body composition have so far not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to assess possible effects of prenatal exposure to currently used pesticides on children's growth, endocrine and reproductive function. Methods: In a prospective study of 247 children born by women working in greenhouses in early pregnancy, 168 were categorized as prenatally exposed to pesticides. At three months (n = 203) and at 6 to11 years of age (n = 177) the children underwent a clinical examination and blood sampling for analysis of IGF-I, IGFBP3 and thyroid hormones. Body fat percentage at age 6 to11 years was calculated from skin fold measurements. Pesticide related associations were tested by linear multiple regression analysis, adjusting for relevant confounders. Results: Compared to unexposed children birth weight and weight for gestational age were lower in the highly exposed children: -173 g (-322; -23), -4.8% (-9.0; -0.7) and medium exposed children: -139 g (-272; -6), -3.6% (-7.2; -0.0). Exposed (medium and highly together) children had significantly larger increase in BMI Z-score (0.55 SD (95% CI: 0.1; 1.0) from birth to school age) and highly exposed children had 15.8% (0.2; 34.6) larger skin folds and higher body fat percentage compared to unexposed. If prenatally exposed to both pesticides and maternal smoking (any amount), the sum of four skin folds was 46.9% (95% CI: 8.1; 99.5) and body fat percentage 29.1% (95% CI: 3.0; 61.4) higher. There were subtle associations between exposure and TSH Z-score -0.66(-1.287; -0.022) and IGF-I Z-score (girls: -0.62(-1.0; -0.22), boys: 0.38(-0.03; 0.79)), but not IGFBP3. Conclusions: Occupational exposure to currently used pesticides may have adverse effects in spite of the added protection offered to pregnant women. Maternal exposure to combinations of modern, non-persistent pesticides during early pregnancy was associated with affected growth, both prenatally and postnatally. We found a biphasic association with lower weight at birth followed by increased body fat accumulation from birth to school age. We cannot rule out some residual confounding due to differences in social class, although this was adjusted for. Associations were stronger in highly exposed than in medium exposed children, and effects on body fat content at school age was potentiated by maternal smoking in pregnancy

Analyzing and Modeling Real-World Phenomena with Complex Networks: A Survey of Applications

    Get PDF
The success of new scientific areas can be assessed by their potential for contributing to new theoretical approaches and in applications to real-world problems. Complex networks have fared extremely well in both of these aspects, with their sound theoretical basis developed over the years and with a variety of applications. In this survey, we analyze the applications of complex networks to real-world problems and data, with emphasis in representation, analysis and modeling, after an introduction to the main concepts and models. A diversity of phenomena are surveyed, which may be classified into no less than 22 areas, providing a clear indication of the impact of the field of complex networks.Comment: 103 pages, 3 figures and 7 tables.
