    Validity and practical utility of accelerometry for the measurement of in-hand physical activity in horses

    Background: Accelerometers are valid, practical and reliable tools for the measurement of habitual physical activity (PA). Quantification of PA in horses is desirable for use in research and clinical settings. The objective of this study was to evaluate a triaxial accelerometer for objective measurement of PA in the horse by assessment of their practical utility and validity. Horses were recruited to establish both the optimal site of accelerometer attachment and questionnaire designed to explore owner acceptance. Validity and cut-off values were obtained by assessing PA at various gaits. Validation study- 20 horses wore the accelerometer while being filmed for 10Ā min each of rest, walking and trotting and 5 mins of canter work. Practical utility study- five horses wore accelerometers on polls and withers for 18Ā h; compliance and relative data losses were quantified. Results: Accelerometry output differed significantly between the four PA levels (Pā€‰<0ā€¢001) for both wither and poll placement. For withers placement, ROC analyses found optimal sensitivity and specificity at a cut-off of <47 counts per minute (cpm) for rest (sensitivity 99.5Ā %, specificity 100Ā %), 967ā€“2424Ā cpm for trotting (sensitivity 96.7Ā %, specificity 100Ā %) and ≥2425Ā cpm for cantering (sensitivity 96.0Ā %, specificity 97.0Ā %). Attachment at the poll resulted in optimal sensitivity and specificity at a cut-off of <707 counts per minute (cpm) for rest (sensitivity 97.5Ā %, specificity 99.6Ā %), 1546ā€“2609Ā cpm for trotting (sensitivity 90.33Ā %, specificity 79.25Ā %) and ≥2610Ā cpm for cantering (sensitivity 100Ā %, specificity 100Ā %) In terms of practical utility, accelerometry was well tolerated and owner acceptance high. Conclusion: Accelerometry data correlated well with varying levels of in-hand equine activity. The use of accelerometers is a valid method for objective measurement of controlled PA in the horse

    Fluctuations in the brightness of the Earth's atmosphere originating from water vapor are an important source of noise for ground-based instruments attempting to measure anisotropy in the Cosmic Microwave Background. This paper presents a model for the atmospheric fluctuations and derives simple expressions to predict the contribution of the atmosphere to experimental measurements.     Decision theory formally solves the problem of rational agents in uncertain worlds if the true environmental probability distribution is known. Solomonoff's theory of universal induction formally solves the problem of sequence prediction for unknown distribution. We unify both theories and give strong arguments that the resulting universal AIXI model behaves optimal in any computable environment. The major drawback of the AIXI model is that it is uncomputable.     Sulfur Isotopes in Gas-rich Impact-Melt Glasses in Shergottites

    Large impact melt glasses in some shergottites contain huge amounts of Martian atmospheric gases and they are known as gas-rich impact-melt (GRIM) glasses. By studying the neutron-induced isotopic deficits and excesses in Sm-149 and Sm-150 isotopes resulting from Sm-149 (n,gamma) 150Sm reaction and 80Kr excesses produced by Br-79 (n,gamma) Kr-80 reaction in the GRIM glasses using mass-spectrometric techniques, it was shown that these glasses in shergottites EET79001 and Shergotty contain regolith materials irradiated by a thermal neutron fluence of approx.10(exp 15) n/sq cm near Martian surface. Also, it was shown that these glasses contain varying amounts of sulfates and sulfides based on the release patterns of SO2 (sulfate) and H2S (sulfide) using stepwise-heating mass-spectrometric techniques. Furthermore, EMPA and FE-SEM studies in basaltic-shergottite GRIM glasses EET79001, LithB (,507& ,69), Shergotty (DBS I &II), Zagami (,992 & ,994) showed positive correlation between FeO and "SO3" (sulfide + sulfate), whereas those belonging to olivine-phyric shergottites EET79001, LithA (,506, & ,77) showed positive correlation between CaO/Al2O3 and "SO3"

    In this paper, we consider the use of artificial intelligence techniques to aid in discovery of winning strategies for the Commons Game (CG). The game represents a common scenario in which multiple parties share the use of a self-replenishing resource. The resource deteriorates quickly if used indiscriminately. If used responsibly, however, the resource thrives. We consider the scenario one player uses hill climbing or particle swarm optimization to select the course of action, while the remaining N āˆ’ 1 players use a fixed probability vector. We show that hill climbing and particle swarm optimization consistently generate winning strategies
