Effective generation of cat and kitten states
We present an effective method of coherent state superposition (cat state)
generation using single trapped ion in a Paul trap. The method is
experimentally feasible for coherent states with amplitude using
available technology. It works both in and beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
Quantum signatures of chaos in the dynamics of a trapped ion
We show how a nonlinear chaotic system, the parametrically kicked nonlinear
oscillator, may be realised in the dynamics of a trapped, laser-cooled ion,
interacting with a sequence of standing wave pulses. Unlike the original
optical scheme [G.J.Milburn and C.A.Holmes, Phys. Rev A, 44, p4704, (1991)],
the trapped ion enables strongly quantum dynamics with minimal dissipation.
This should permit an experimental test of one of the quantum signatures of
chaos; irregular collapse and revival dynamics of the average vibrational
energy.Comment: 9 pages, 9 Postscript figures, Revtex, submitted to Phys. Rev.
The B subunit of Escherichia coli heat-labile toxin alters the development and antigen-presenting capacity of dendritic cells
Escherichia coli’s heat-labile enterotoxin (Etx) and its non-toxic B subunit (EtxB) have been characterized as adjuvants capable of enhancing T cell responses to co-administered antigen. Here, we investigate the direct effect of intravenously administered EtxB on the size of the dendritic and mye-loid cell populations in spleen. EtxB treatment appears to enhance the development and turnover of dendritic and myeloid cells from precursors within the spleen. EtxB treatment also gives a dendritic cell (DC) population with higher viability and lower activation status based on the reduced expression of MHC-II, CD80 and CD86. In this respect, the in vivo effect of EtxB differs from that of the highly inflammatory mediator lipopolysaccharide. In in vi-tro bone marrow cultures, EtxB treatment was also found to enhance the development of DC from precursors dependent on Flt3L. In terms of the in vivo effect of EtxB on CD4 and CD8 T cell responses in mice, the interaction of EtxB directly with DC was demonstrated following conditional deple-tion of CD11c+ DC. In summary, all results are consistent with EtxB displaying adjuvant ability by enhancing the turnover of DC in spleen, leading to newly mature myeloid and DC in spleen, thereby increasing DC capacity to perform as antigen-presenting cells on encounter with T cells
Reflections on the identity and contribution of doctoral graduates. A work in progress
This presentation introduces a reflective study on the identity and contribution of professional doctorate graduates. The study charts the learning journey of three professional doctorate graduates through their vignette stories. A narrative analysis highlighted a range of themes including leadership, service and responsibility to others and trust and ethical practice. These themes are considered in light of the doctorate contribution and longer term sphere of influence that the professional doctors may have. Engendering trust through the title 'Dr' seemed to be relevant. Looking at how other professions build trust in a role and title, led to consideration of the medical doctor Hippocratic Oath. A range of oaths and pledges are considered in the development of a General Hippocratic Oath for Professional Doctors (a Prof Doc Pledge) which has been included. The Prof Doc Pledge is seen as open and relevant to all doctoral graduates outside of the medical practitioner Hippocratic Oath
Cool for Cats
The iconic Schr\"odinger's cat state describes a system that may be in a
superposition of two macroscopically distinct states, for example two clearly
separated oscillator coherent states. Quite apart from their role in
understanding the quantum classical boundary, such states have been suggested
as offering a quantum advantage for quantum metrology, quantum communication
and quantum computation. As is well known these applications have to face the
difficulty that the irreversible interaction with an environment causes the
superposition to rapidly evolve to a mixture of the component states in the
case that the environment is not monitored. Here we show that by engineering
the interaction with the environment there exists a large class of systems that
can evolve irreversibly to a cat state. To be precise we show that it is
possible to engineer an irreversible process so that the steady state is close
to a pure Schr\"odinger's cat state by using double well systems and an
environment comprising two-photon (or phonon) absorbers. We also show that it
should be possible to prolong the lifetime of a Schr\"odinger's cat state
exposed to the destructive effects of a conventional single-photon decohering
environment. Our protocol should make it easier to prepare and maintain
Schr\"odinger cat states which would be useful in applications of quantum
metrology and information processing as well as being of interest to those
probing the quantum to classical transition.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. Significantly updated version with supplementary

Quantum Estimation of Parameters of Classical Spacetimes
We describe a quantum limit to measurement of classical spacetimes.
Specifically, we formulate a quantum Cramer-Rao lower bound for estimating the
single parameter in any one-parameter family of spacetime metrics. We employ
the locally covariant formulation of quantum field theory in curved spacetime,
which allows for a manifestly background-independent derivation. The result is
an uncertainty relation that applies to all globally hyperbolic spacetimes.
Among other examples, we apply our method to detection of gravitational waves
using the electromagnetic field as a probe, as in laser-interferometric
gravitational-wave detectors. Other applications are discussed, from
terrestrial gravimetry to cosmology.Comment: 23 pages. This article supersedes arXiv:1108.522
Quantum entanglement between a nonlinear nanomechanical resonator and a microwave field
We consider a theoretical model for a nonlinear nanomechanical resonator
coupled to a superconducting microwave resonator. The nanomechanical resonator
is driven parametrically at twice its resonance frequency, while the
superconducting microwave resonator is driven with two tones that differ in
frequency by an amount equal to the parametric driving frequency. We show that
the semi-classical approximation of this system has an interesting fixed point
bifurcation structure. In the semi-classical dynamics a transition from stable
fixed points to limit cycles is observed as one moves from positive to negative
detuning. We show that signatures of this bifurcation structure are also
present in the full dissipative quantum system and further show that it leads
to mixed state entanglement between the nanomechanical resonator and the
microwave cavity in the dissipative quantum system that is a maximum close to
the semi-classical bifurcation. Quantum signatures of the semi-classical
limit-cycles are presented.Comment: 36 pages, 18 figure
The nonlinear directional coupler. An analytic solution
Linear and nonlinear directional couplers are currently used in fiber optics
communications. They may also play a role in multiphoton approaches to quantum
information processing if accurate control is obtained over the phases and
polarizations of the signals at the output of the coupler. With this
motivation, the constants of motion of the coupler equation are used to obtain
an explicit analytical solution for the nonlinear coupler.Comment: 6 pages Late
