Testing reflection features in 4U 1705-44 with XMM-Newton, BeppoSAX and RXTE in the hard and soft state
We use data of the bright atoll source 4U 1705-44 taken with XMM-Newton,
BeppoSAX and RXTE both in the hard and in the soft state to perform a
self-consistent study of the reflection component in this source. Although the
data from these X-ray observatories are not simultaneous, the spectral
decomposition is shown to be consistent among the different observations, when
the source flux is similar. We therefore select observations performed at
similar flux levels in the hard and soft state in order to study the spectral
shape in these two states in a broad band (0.1-200 keV) energy range, with good
energy resolution, and using self-consistent reflection models. These
reflection models provide a good fit for the X-ray spectrum both in the hard
and in the soft state in the whole spectral range. We discuss the differences
in the main spectral parameters we find in the hard and the soft state,
respectively, providing evidence that the inner radius of the optically thick

Oxygen transfer in the solid-state cultivation of D. Monoceras on polyurethane foam as an inert support
In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest concerning solid-state cultivation processes due to a number of advantages over submerged cultivation. However, studies on oxygen transfer and the performance of bioreactors are lacking. Processes that use inert supports loaded with chemically-defined liquid media have several potential applications and offer numerous advantages, such as improved process control and monitoring and enhanced process consistency compared with cultivation on natural solid substrates. The aim of this research was to study the oxygen transfer for the production of allergenic proteins from a biomass of Drechslera (Helminthosporium) monoceras cultured in a packed-bed reactor filled with polyurethane foam. Evaluating the semantic web: a task-based approach
The increased availability of online knowledge has led to the design of several algorithms that solve a variety of tasks by harvesting the Semantic Web, i.e. by dynamically selecting and exploring a multitude of online ontologies. Our hypothesis is that the performance of such novel algorithms implicity provides an insight into the quality of the used ontologies and thus opens the way to a task-based evaluation of the Semantic Web. We have investigated this hypothesis by studying the lessons learnt about online ontologies when used to solve three tasks: ontology matching, folksonomy enrichment, and word sense disambiguation. Our analysis leads to a suit of conclusions about the status of the Semantic Web, which highlight a number of strengths and weaknesses of the semantic information available online and complement the findings of other analysis of the Semantic Web landscape

O milheto [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Brown] é uma opção importante dentre as espécies vegetais para adubação verde. É uma planta anual, forrageira de verão, de clima tropical, hábito ereto, porte alto, e pode atingir até 5 m de altura. Dentre as principais características do milheto ressaltam-se: tolerância à seca, capacidade em adaptar-se a diferentes solos, facilidade de produzir sementes e boa adaptação à mecanização. Oncogenic Gain of Function in Glioblastoma Is Linked to Mutant p53 Amyloid Oligomers.
Tumor-associated p53 mutations endow cells with malignant phenotypes, including chemoresistance. Amyloid-like oligomers of mutant p53 transform this tumor suppressor into an oncogene. However, the composition and distribution of mutant p53 oligomers are unknown and the mechanism involved in the conversion is sparse. Here, we report accumulation of a p53 mutant within amyloid-like p53 oligomers in glioblastoma-derived cells presenting a chemoresistant gain-of-function phenotype. Statistical analysis from fluorescence fluctuation spectroscopy, pressure-induced measurements, and thioflavin T kinetics demonstrates the distribution of oligomers larger than the active tetrameric form of p53 in the nuclei of living cells and the destabilization of native-drifted p53 species that become amyloid. Collectively, these results provide insights into the role of amyloid-like mutant p53 oligomers in the chemoresistance phenotype of malignant and invasive brain tumors and shed light on therapeutic options to avert cancer

Late-onset neonatal sepsis in preterm infants with birth weight under 1.500g
Objective: the research objective was to characterize preterm infants with birth weight under 1500 g, and to identify the incidence of late-onset neonatal sepsis among this population.
Methods: a prospective cohort study with a sample of 30 preterm newborns that weighed under 1500 g and were hospitalized in the NICU of the university hospital. Data were collected from January to December 2013 using a structured instrument.
Results: of the 30 neonates included in the study, 14 developed late-onset neonatal sepsis with a prevalence of coagulase-negative staphylococci.
Conclusions: the incidence of late-onset neonatal sepsis indicates a vulnerability in preterm infants due to immunological immaturity. These results reveal that knowledge of the profi le of newborn infants admitted to the NICU and the risk factors to which they are exposed are central to the planning of nursing care for these patients. Future studies should address strategies for preventing nosocomial infection
Spatial distribution of two symmetric four-wave mixing signals induced by Gaussian beams
We present a theoretical analysis of the spatial shape of two symmetric
signals of degenerate four-wave mixing induced by Gaussian beams in a thin
sample of two-level atoms. Our calculations take into account the full spatial
and spectral dependencies of the relevant nonlinear susceptibilities that
govern the two processes. This reveals two interesting effects. The first one
is that the total power of incident beams affects the transverse profile of the
four-wave mixing signals at the medium exit and their free propagation. The
second one is the influence of the spectral characteristics of the medium on
the longitudinal profile of both generated signals upon free propagation. We
argue that the first effect can be seen as the saturation of the medium in
regions of higher intensity, while the second can be understood as the result
of a nonlinear contribution to the refractive index inside the atomic medium.
These effects can be symmetric between the two signals, with asymmetries
induced by different detunings from resonance of the incident fields
