    Get PDF
This paper analyses the progression of eurosceptic groups within the European Parliament between 2009 and 2019. Through pre-established definitions of Euroscepticism as a political phenomenon, we conduct a quantitative and qualitative analysis, which gathers data from the official results of 3 European legislative elections (2009, 2014 and 2019) and later interprets them with the aid of previous academic production on eurosceptic values and strategies within the European Union’s institutions. As a conclusion, we seek to demonstrate that Euroscepticism is a consequence of a greater scenario, which relates to a gradual loss of public trust in the European political establishment.

    Get PDF
Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe soft tissue infection with a high mortality rate and therefore requires emergent surgical treatment. Several microorganisms can cause this infection, Photobacterium damselae being one of them, with only eight cases previously published in the literature. We report the first ever case of necrotizing fasciitis, caused by this microorganism, in Portugal. In this case report the patient survived after several debridement procedures and reconstruction of the upper limb with acellular dermal matrix and skin graft. A brief review of the Photobacterium damselae soft tissue infection reports as well as the clinical presentation, diagnosis, pathophysiology and treatment of necrotizing fasciitis can also be found in this paper.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Experimental observation of quantum entanglement in low dimensional spin systems

We report macroscopic magnetic measurements carried out in order to detect and characterize field-induced quantum entanglement in low dimensional spin systems. We analyze the pyroborate MgMnB_2O_5 and the and the warwickite MgTiOBO_3, systems with spin 5/2 and 1/2 respectively. By using the magnetic susceptibility as an entanglement witness we are able to quantify entanglement as a function of temperature and magnetic field. In addition, we experimentally distinguish for the first time a random singlet phase from a Griffiths phase. This analysis opens the possibility of a more detailed characterization of low dimensional materials

Group theory analysis of electrons and phonons in N-layer graphene systems

In this work we study the symmetry properties of electrons and phonons in graphene systems as function of the number of layers. We derive the selection rules for the electron-radiation and for the electron-phonon interactions at all points in the Brillouin zone. By considering these selection rules, we address the double resonance Raman scattering process. The monolayer and bilayer graphene in the presence of an applied electric field are also discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

Collapse of an ecological network in Ancient Egypt

    Get PDF
The dynamics of ecosystem collapse are fundamental to determining how and why biological communities change through time, as well as the potential effects of extinctions on ecosystems. Here we integrate depictions of mammals from Egyptian antiquity with direct lines of paleontological and archeological evidence to infer local extinctions and community dynamics over a 6000-year span. The unprecedented temporal resolution of this data set enables examination of how the tandem effects of human population growth and climate change can disrupt mammalian communities. We show that the extinctions of mammals in Egypt were nonrandom, and that destabilizing changes in community composition coincided with abrupt aridification events and the attendant collapses of some complex societies. We also show that the roles of species in a community can change over time, and that persistence is predicted by measures of species sensitivity, a function of local dynamic stability. Our study is the first high-resolution analysis of the ecological impacts of environmental change on predator-prey networks over millennial timescales, and sheds light on the historical events that have shaped modern animal communities

    Carbon nanotube: a low-loss spin-current waveguide

We demonstrate with a quantum-mechanical approach that carbon nanotubes are excellent spin-current waveguides and are able to carry information stored in a precessing magnetic moment for long distances with very little dispersion and with tunable degrees of attenuation. Pulsed magnetic excitations are predicted to travel with the nanotube Fermi velocity and are able to induce similar excitations in remote locations. Such an efficient way of transporting magnetic information suggests that nanotubes are promising candidates for memory devices with fast magnetization switchings
