A Link Between the Semi-Major Axis of Extrasolar Gas Giant Planets and Stellar Metallicity
The fact that most extrasolar planets found to date are orbiting metal-rich
stars lends credence to the core accretion mechanism of gas giant planet
formation over its competitor, the disc instability mechanism. However, the
core accretion mechanism is not refined to the point of explaining orbital
parameters such as their unexpected semi-major axes and eccentricities. We
propose a model, which correlates the metallicity of the host star with the
original semi-major axis of its most massive planet, prior to migration,
considering that the core accretion scenario governs giant gas planet
formation. The model predicts that the optimum regions for planetary formation
shift inward as stellar metallicity decreases, providing an explanation for the
observed absence of long period planets in metal-poor stars. We compare our
predictions with the available data on extrasolar planets for stars with masses
similar to the mass of the Sun. A fitting procedure produces an estimate of
what we define as the Zero Age Planetary Orbit (ZAPO) curve as a function of
the metallicity of the star. The model also hints that the lack of planets
circling metal-poor stars may be partly caused by an enhanced destruction
probability during the migration process, since the planets lie initially
closer to the central stars.Comment: Nature of the replacement: According to recent simulations, the

Superscars in the LiNC=LiCN isomerization reaction
We demonstrate the existence of superscarring in the LiNC=LiCN isomerization
reaction described by a realistic potential interaction in the range of readily
attainable experimental energies. This phenomenon arises as the effect of two
periodic orbits appearing "out of the blue"in a saddle--node bifurcation taking
place in the dynamics of the system. Potential practical consequences of this

The Network of Epicenters of the Olami-Feder-Christensen Model of Earthquakes
We study the dynamics of the Olami-Feder-Christensen (OFC) model of
earthquakes, focusing on the behavior of sequences of epicenters regarded as a
growing complex network. Besides making a detailed and quantitative study of
the effects of the borders (the occurrence of epicenters is dominated by a
strong border effect which does not scale with system size), we examine the
degree distribution and the degree correlation of the graph. We detect sharp
differences between the conservative and nonconservative regimes of the model.
Removing border effects, the conservative regime exhibits a Poisson-like degree
statistics and is uncorrelated, while the nonconservative has a broad
power-law-like distribution of degrees (if the smallest events are ignored),
which reproduces the observed behavior of real earthquakes. In this regime the
graph has also a unusually strong degree correlation among the vertices with
higher degree, which is the result of the existence of temporary attractors for
the dynamics: as the system evolves, the epicenters concentrate increasingly on
fewer sites, exhibiting strong synchronization, but eventually spread again
over the lattice after a series of sufficiently large earthquakes. We propose
an analytical description of the dynamics of this growing network, considering
a Markov process network with hidden variables, which is able to account for

Influence of physical and chemical characteristics of wine grapes on the incidence of Penicillium and Aspergillus fungi in grapes and ochratoxin A in wines
The incidence of filamentous fungi and toxin levels in grapes and wines varies depending on the variety of grapes, the wine region, agricultural practices, weather conditions, the harvest and the winemaking process. In this sense, the objective of this study was to evaluate the diversity of Aspergillus and Penicillium fungi isolated fromwine grapes of the semi-arid tropical region of Brazil, evaluate the presence of ochratoxin A (OTA) in the experimental wine and verify if there is a correlation between occurrence of these fungi and the physicochemical characteristics of the wine grapes grown in the region. For the isolation of fungi we used the direct plating technique. The presence of OTA in the experimental wine was detected by high-performance liquid chromatography. The species found were Aspergillus niger, A. carbonarius, A. aculeatus, A. niger Aggregate, A. flavus, A. sojae, Penicillium sclerotiorum, P. citrinum, P. glabrum, P. decumbens, P. solitum and P. implicatum. All isolates of A. carbonarius were OTA producers and all P. citrinum were citrinin producers. The highest concentration of OTA was found in red wine (0.29 ?g/L). All species identified in this study, except A. flavus, showed a positive correlation with at least one physicochemical parameter assessed, highlighting the pectin content, total sugar, total acidity and phenolic compounds
Detection of ochratoxin A in tropical wine and grape juice from Brazil.
Ochratoxin A (OTA) is the main mycotoxin found in grapes, wines and grape juices and is considered one of the most harmful contaminants to human health. In this study, samples of tropical wines and grape juices from different grape varieties grown in Brazil were analysed for their OTA content by high-performance liquid chromatography. The detection and quantification limits for OTA were 0.01 and 0.03 μg L−1 respectively. OTA was detected in 13 (38.24%) of the samples analysed, with concentrations ranging from <0.03 to 0.62 μg L−1. OTA was not detected in any of the grape juice samples. Most of the red wine samples proved to be contaminated with OTA (75%), while only one white wine sample was contaminated. However, the OTA levels detected in all samples were well below the maximum tolerable limit (2 μg L−1) in wine and grape juice established by the European Community and Brazilian legislature. The results of this study indicate a low risk of exposure to OTA by consumption of tropical wines and grape juices from Brazil
Aspergillus ocratoxigênicos em uvas e no solo de cultivo da variedade Sauvignon Blanc no Nordeste brasileiro.
A ocratoxina A (OTA) é um metabólito secundário de fungos freqüentemente encontrado como contaminante de uvas, vinhos e suco de uva, sendo considerada uma das micotoxinas mais prejudiciais para a saúde humana. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a incidência de Aspergillusocratoxigênicos em uvas e no solo de cultivo da variedade Sauvignon Blanc utilizada para produção de vinho no nordeste brasileiro. As amostras de uva e de solo foram coletadas em uma região vitivinícola do Submédio São Francisco (Casa Nova, Bahia). Para o isolamento de fungos das uvas e sementes utilizou-se a Técnica de Plaqueamento Direto em meio de cultura DRBC (Dicloran Rosa Bengal Cloranfenicol); para a amostra de solo foi utilizada a técnica de espalhamento superficial, em DG 18 (Dichloran 18% Glycerol Agar), a partir de diluições seriadas. Selecionou-se para obtenção de culturas puras apenas os fungos do gênero Aspergillus que foram identificados por características morfológicas e avaliados, quanto à produção de OTA, pelo Método Plug Agar. Das uvas foram isoladas e identificadas as seguintes espécies A. foetidus, A. tubingensis e A. sp.. Destes isolados nenhum foi ocratoxigênico. Dos vinte e nove isolados obtidos do solo, quatro foram ocratoxigênicos (A. niger agregado (1), A. carbonarius agregado (2) e A. carbonarius (1)), o que realça a importância de evitar durante a colheita o contato das uvas com o solo, visto que este pode representar uma fonte de contaminação com esta micotoxina para as uvas e vinhos. Orbital Magnetism in Ensembles of Parabolic Potentials
We study the magnetic susceptibility of an ensemble of non-interacting
electrons confined by parabolic potentials and subjected to a perpendicular
magnetic field at finite temperatures. We show that the behavior of the average
susceptibility is qualitatively different from that of billiards. When averaged
over the Fermi energy the susceptibility exhibits a large paramagnetic response
only at certain special field values, corresponding to comensurate classical
frequencies, being negligible elsewhere. We derive approximate analytical
formulae for the susceptibility and compare the results with numerical
