    Fear of Recurrence in Ovarian Cancer Survivors and Their Spouses

    Problem: Fear of Cancer Recurrence (FCR) is a frequent and prevalent phenomenon experienced by ovarian cancer survivors and spouses throughout survivorship. Purpose: The purpose of this secondary analysis was to analyze the perceived level of FCR by the years of survivorship in women with ovarian cancer and their spouses. Theoretical/Conceptual Framework: The theoretical framework for this research study was based on the Common-Sense Model of Illness developed by Leventhal, Diefenbach, & Leventhal (1992) and further expanded by Lee-Jones et al. (1997). Method: This was a secondary analysis of data from a large study of predictors of adjustment using the demographic and Fear of Cancer Questionnaire (FRQ) results. The secondary analysis is a descriptive correlational design to analyze cross-sectional data from the primary study of subset of cancer survivors who experienced recurrence(s) of ovarian cancer and their spouses (n = 32 dyads). Results: No significant correlation with FCR scores and years of survival in ovarian cancer survivors (r = -0.18, p = 0.33) and spouses (r = -0.31, p = 0.08). ANOVA yielded no difference in FCR scores by age in survivors (F = 0.16, p = 0.69) with 95% CI (76.08, 89.92) and spouses (F = 0.17, p = 0.69) with 95% CI (86.9, 95.9). Conclusions/Implications: It is recommended future research of this study sample perform multiple linear regression or factor analysis statistical tests to demographic variables which may influence FCR scores in ovarian cancer survivors and their spouse

    Metal-only Lewis pairs between group 10 metals and Tl(I) or Ag(I): insights into the electronic consequences of Z-type ligand binding†

    Complexes bearing electron rich transition metal centers, especially those displaying coordinative unsaturation, are well-suited to form reverse-dative σ-interactions with Lewis acids. Herein we demonstrate the generality of zerovalent, group 10 m-terphenyl isocyanide complexes to form reverse-dative σ-interactions to Tl(I) and Ag(I) centers. Structural and spectroscopic investigations of these metal-only Lewis pairs (MOLPs) has allowed insight into the electronic consequences of Lewis-acid ligation within the primary coordination sphere of a transition metal center. Treatment of the bis-isocyanide complex, Pt(CNArDipp2)2 (ArDipp2 = 2,6-(2,6-(i-Pr)2C6H3)2C6H3) with TlOTf (OTf = [O3SCF3]−) yields the Pt/Tl MOLP [TlPt(CNArDipp2)2]OTf (1). 1H NMR and IR spectroscopic studies on 1, and its Pd congener [TlPd(CNArDipp2)2]OTf (2), demonstrate that the M → Tl interaction is labile in solution. However, treatment of complexes 1 and 2 with Na[BArF4] (ArF = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3) produces [TlPt(CNArDipp2)2]BArF4 (3) and [TlPd(CNArDipp2)2]BArF4 (4), in which Tl(I) binding is shown to be static by IR spectroscopy and, in the case of 3, 195Pt NMR spectroscopy as well. This result provides strong evidence that the M → Tl linkages can be attributed primarily to σ-donation from the group 10 metal to Tl, as loss of ionic stabilization of Tl by the triflate anion is compensated for by increasing the degree of M → Tl σ-donation. In addition, X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) on the Pd/Tl and Ni/Tl MOLPs, [TlPd(CNArDipp2)2]OTf (2) and [TlNi(CNArMes2)3]OTf, respectively, is used to illustrate that the formation of a reverse-dative σ-interaction with Tl(I) does not alter the spectroscopic oxidation state of the group 10 metal. Also reported is the ability of M(CNArDipp2)2 (M = Pt, Pd) to form MOLPs with Ag(I), yielding the complexes [AgM(CNArDipp2)2]OTf (5, M = Pt; 6, M = Pd). As was determined for the Tl-containing MOLPs 1–4, it is shown that the spectroscopic oxidation states of the group 10 metal in 5 and 6 are essentially unchanged compared to the zerovalent precursors M(CNArDipp2)2. However, in the case of 5 and 6, the formation of a dative M → Ag σ-bonding interaction facilitates the binding of Lewis bases to the group 10 metal trans to Ag, illustrating the potential of acceptor fragments to open up new coordination sites on transition metal complexes without formal, two-electron oxidation

    Efficacy of a Workbook to Promote Forgiveness: A Randomized Controlled Trial with University Students

    Objective The present study investigated the efficacy of a 6-hour self-directed workbook adapted from the REACH Forgiveness intervention. Method Undergraduates (N = 41) were randomly assigned to either an immediate treatment or waitlist control condition. Participants were assessed across 3 time periods using a variety of forgiveness outcome measures. Results The 6-hour workbook intervention increased forgiveness, as indicated by positive changes in participants’ forgiveness ratings that differed by condition. In addition, benchmarking analysis showed that the self-directed workbook intervention is at least as efficacious as the delivery of the REACH Forgiveness model via group therapy. Conclusion A self-directed workbook intervention adapted from the REACH Forgiveness intervention provides an adjunct to traditional psychotherapy that could assist the mental health community to manage the burden of unforgiveness among victims of interpersonal harm

    Morphological Classification of Galaxies by Shapelet Decomposition in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey II: Multiwavelength Classification

    We describe the application of the `shapelet' linear decomposition of galaxy images to multi-wavelength morphological classification using the u,g,r,i,u,g,r,i, and zz-band images of 1519 galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We utilize elliptical shapelets to remove to first-order the effect of inclination on morphology. After decomposing the galaxies we perform a principal component analysis on the shapelet coefficients to reduce the dimensionality of the spectral morphological parameter space. We give a description of each of the first ten principal component's contribution to a galaxy's spectral morphology. We find that galaxies of different broad Hubble type separate cleanly in the principal component space. We apply a mixture of Gaussians model to the 2-dimensional space spanned by the first two principal components and use the results as a basis for classification. Using the mixture model, we separate galaxies into three classes and give a description of each class's physical and morphological properties. We find that the two dominant mixture model classes correspond to early and late type galaxies, respectively. The third class has, on average, a blue, extended core surrounded by a faint red halo, and typically exhibits some asymmetry. We compare our method to a simple cut on u−ru-r color and find the shapelet method to be superior in separating galaxies. Furthermore, we find evidence that the u−r=2.22u-r=2.22 decision boundary may not be optimal for separation between early and late type galaxies, and suggest that the optimal cut may be u−r∼2.4u-r \sim 2.4.Comment: 42 pages, 18 figs, revised version in press at AJ.     Closing International Law\u27s Innocence Gap

    Over the last decade, a growing number of countries have adopted new laws and other mechanisms to address a gap in national criminal legal systems: the absence of meaningful procedures to raise post-conviction claims of factual innocence. These legal and policy reforms have responded to a global surge of exonerations facilitated by the growth of national innocence organizations that increasingly collaborate across borders. It is striking that these developments have occurred with little direct help from international law. Although many treaties recognize extensive fair trial and appeal rights, no international human rights instrument—in its text, existing interpretation, or implementation—explicitly and fully recognizes the right to assert a claim of factual innocence. We label this omission international law’s innocence gap. The gap appears increasingly anomalous given how foundational innocence protection has become at the national level, as well as international law’s longstanding commitment to the presumption of innocence, fair trial, and other criminal process guarantees. We argue the time has come to close this innocence gap by recognizing a new international human right to assert post-trial claims of factual innocence

    Prenatal and Postnatal Sonographic Confirmation of Congenital Absence of the Ductus Venosus in a Child with Noonan Syndrome

    The ductus venosus serves as an important vascular pathway for intrauterine circulation. This case presents a description of an absent ductus venosus in a female patient with Noonan syndrome, including both prenatal and postnatal imaging of the anomaly. In the setting of the anomalous vascular connection, the umbilical vein courses inferiorly to the iliac vein in parallel configuration with the umbilical artery. This finding was suspected based on prenatal imaging and the case was brought to attention when placement of an umbilical catheter was thought to be malpositioned given its appearance on radiography. Ultrasound imaging confirmed the anomalous course. This is in keeping with prior descriptions in the literature of an association between Noonan syndrome and aberrant umbilical venous drainage. This case illustrates the need for awareness of this condition by the radiologist, allowing for identification on radiographs and the recommendation for further confirmatory imaging. Further, the case illustrates the value of paying particular attention to the fetal course of the umbilical vessels in patients with suspected Noonan syndrome, as this population is particularly at risk for anomalous vasculature

    Polarization Requirements for Ensemble Implementations of Quantum Algorithms with a Single Bit Output

    We compare the failure probabilities of ensemble implementations of quantum algorithms which use pseudo-pure initial states, quantified by their polarization, to those of competing classical probabilistic algorithms. Specifically we consider a class algorithms which require only one bit to output the solution to problems. For large ensemble sizes, we present a general scheme to determine a critical polarization beneath which the quantum algorithm fails with greater probability than its classical competitor. We apply this to the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm and show that the critical polarization is 86.6%.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

    Efficacy of REACH Forgiveness across Cultures

    Across cultures, most people agree that forgiveness is a virtue. However, culture may influence how willing one should be to forgive and how one might express forgiveness. At a university in the United States, we recruited both foreign-extraction students and domestic students (N = 102) to participate in a six-hour REACH Forgiveness intervention. We investigated the efficacy of the intervention overall as well as whether foreign-extraction and domestic students responded differently to treatment. Forgiveness was assessed using two measures—decisional forgiveness and emotional forgiveness. The six-hour REACH Forgiveness intervention improved participants’ ratings of emotional forgiveness, but not decisional forgiveness, regardless of their culture. Thus, the REACH Forgiveness intervention appears equally efficacious for participants from different cultural backgrounds when conducted in the United States with college students

    The Effect of Alcohol Consumption History on Sensitivity and Acute Functional Tolerance to the Ataxic Effects of Alcohol in C57BL/6J Mice

    Binge alcohol drinking may increase the rate of development of acute functional tolerance (AFT; within session tolerance) and decrease initial sensitivity to alcohol, which in turn may increase the binge drinking behavior. The focus of this study is to determine the effects of the alcohol pre-exposure on two major responses to alcohol, sensitivity and tolerance. Sixty male C57BL/6J mice in the range of 60 to 80 days old were placed in one of the five groups varying their duration of the alcohol pre-exposure. Mice were tested for ataxic sensitivity and tolerance following 0, 1, 4, 8, or 15 days of binge alcohol consumption. The pre-exposure was conducted in the limited access drinking paradigm over the course of the dark cycle for fifteen consecutive days. The static dowel task, which requires mice to balance on an elevated wooden dowel, was utilized to determine the sensitivity, recovery length, and AFT capacity to alcohol-induced ataxia. AFT was quantified by comparing the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) at loss of balance to the BAC at recovery. Although it appeared that 4 and 15 days of repeated binge alcohol drinking reduced sensitivity to alcohol, there were no main effect of the group (p > 0.05). Analysis of the recovery of balance was significant (p < 0.05), with post-hoc tests indicating that mice with 4, 8, and 15 days of repeated binge alcohol drinking recovering the ability to balance on the static dowel earlier than the 0 group. However, the analysis of AFT was not significant, indicating that prior binge alcohol drinking, regardless of duration, did not alter development of within session tolerance. Future studies evaluating AFT using these physiological markers are needed to validate the contradictory findings and advance the scientific knowledge of the relationship between binge drinking and AFT

    We Would If We Could: Examining Culturally Responsive Teaching Self-Efficacy in a Middle School Mathematics Methods Course

    Despite mounting evidence of the pedagogical importance of culturally responsive teaching, many teachers do not implement culturally responsive practices in their classrooms. The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service mathematics teachers’ culturally responsive teaching and outcome expectancy in order to inform teacher preparation in mathematics methods courses. Participants completed the Culturally Responsive Teaching Self-efficacy Scale (CRTSE) and the Culturally Response Teaching Outcome Expectancy (CRTOE) Scale. Results suggest that middle school mathematics teachers were only moderately efficacious in their ability to implement culturally responsive teaching practices, despite strong beliefs in the instructional utility of culturally responsive teaching practices
