    Self-esteem and wellbeing among tribal and non-tribal adolescent girls

     Background: Adolescent period reports experiences of changes in physical, mental and social functions. Self-esteem has a significant contribution to wellbeing and depression in adolescent. The aim and objective was to evaluate self-esteem and wellbeing among adolescent girls with tribal and non-tribal ethnicity.Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted in which 2 schools and 1 institute selected using purposive sampling. The total enumeration method of random sampling was obtained to select participants. Total of 360 adolescent girls (180 each tribal and non-tribal adolescent girls) were selected for the study. Socio-demographic datasheet, adolescent wellbeing scale and Rosenberg self-esteem scale were used for the assessment.Results: The adolescent girls with tribal ethnicity found to have low self-esteem and wellbeing (depressive) compared to adolescent girls with non-tribal ethnicity. 33.9% of tribal adolescent girls and 13.3% of non-tribal adolescent girls found in depressive dimension.Conclusions: The deliberate efforts to build self-esteem and wellbeing among tribal adolescent girls can help to promote their mental health. The mental health promotion and wellness programs specific to ethnicity and culture requires to uphold the wellbeing of the adolescent girls with tribal ethnicity

    Sensory evaluation of different pashmina shawls

    Pashmina shawls prepared from different hand spun, machine spun and blended yarns have been evaluated subjectively. The important handle properties such as softness, smoothness, lustre and total hand value have been assessed by sensory evaluation through expert judges of different age and gender. The correlation coefficient between the groups for individual property has been determined.  The softness and smoothness values found highest agreement between different groups  followed by smoothness and total hand value. The good agreement between groups indicates that difference in pashmina shawl manufacturing and blend composition can be distinguished.  The subjective test results were compared with FAST objective values and good correlation has been observed

    AbstractThis paper deals with singularly perturbed boundary value problem for a linear second order delay differential equation. It is known that the classical numerical methods are not satisfactory when applied to solve singularly perturbed problems in delay differential equations. In this paper we present an exponentially fitted finite difference scheme to overcome the drawbacks of the corresponding classical counter parts. The stability of the scheme is investigated. The proposed scheme is analyzed for convergence. Several linear singularly perturbed delay differential equations have been solved and the numerical results are presented to support the theory

    Observation of transient superconductivity at the LaAlO3_3/SrTiO3_3 interface

    We report the observation of a magnetic field assisted transient superconducting state in the two dimensional electron gas existing at the interface of LaAlO3_3/SrTiO3_3 heterostructures. This metastable state depends critically on the density of charge carriers in the system. It appears concomitantly with a Lifshitz transition as a consequence of the interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity and the finite relaxation time of the in-plane magnetization. Our results clearly demonstrate the inherently metastable nature of the superconducting state competing with a magnetic order in these systems. The co-existence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in the conducting electronic layer formed at the interface of insulating oxides has thrown up several intriguing and as yet unanswered questions. An open question in this field is the energetics of the interplay between these two competing orders and the present observation goes a long way in understanding the underlying mechanism.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figure

    Surgical Management of Pyogenic Discitis of Lumbar Region

    Study DesignRetrospective review of patients who had pyogenic discitis and were managed surgically.PurposeTo analyze the bacteriology, pathology, management and outcome of pyogenic discitis of the lumbar region treated surgically.Overview of LiteratureSurgical management of pyogenic discitis is still an infrequently used modality of treatment.MethodsA total of 42 patients comprised of 33 males and 9 females who had pyogenic discitis with a mean age of 51.61 years (range, 16-75 years) were included in this study. All the cases were confirmed as having pyogenic discitis by pus culture report and histopathological examination. The mean follow-up period was 41.9 months.ResultsDebridement and posterior lumbar interbody fusion with autologous iliac bone graft was done in all cases. Thirteen (30.95%) patients had other medical co-morbidities. Five cases had a previous operation of the spine, and three cases had a history of vertebral fracture. Three patients were operated for gynaecological problems, and four cases had a history of urological surgery. L4-5 level was the most frequent site of pyogenic discitis. The most common bacterium isolated was Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Radiologically good fusion was seen in the majority of patients.ConclusionsPyogenic discitis should be suspected in people having pain and local tenderness in the spinal region with a rise in inflammatory parameters in blood. The most common bacterium was S. aureus, but there were still a greater number of patients infected with other types of bacteria. Therefore, antibiotics therapy should be started only after isolating the bacteria and making the culture sensitivity report

    Madhugiri, also known as Maddagiri is a Taluk headquarter in Tumkur districtin the Indian state of Karnataka, geographically located at 13.66°N and 77.21°E, with anaverage elevation of 787 m (2582 ft), located at ~43 km north of Tumkur town and 107km north-west of Bangalore city. The present study aimed to analyze the crime scenarioin Madugiri town police station jurisdiction by using Hot Spot and Buffer Analysis.Based on Madugiri police station records, the crime data were classified under variousgroup of offence such as Murder, Robbery, Cheating, House theft, Motor-vehicles theft,Missing, Mobile theft, Pick pocketing, Burglary, Chain snatching, Quarreling andHouse breaking (day), House breaking (Night), etc. The distribution of crime incidenceshowed that KHB colony, Madugiri old and new bus-stand around Madugiri fort,Gowribidanur road, Koratgere road, Sira road and Madugiri market areas were affectedby notorious activities. Crime maps generated were able to identify and differentiate hotspot of crime and their displacement, illustrate the relationship between the mappedcrimes patterns and socio-economic characteristics of Madugiri town. It was concludedthat in Madugiri police jurisdiction, crime rates were not so high, but still occurrences ofcrimes like house theft, material theft, etc., were of a great concern. The crime patternschange over space and time in an area and hence the data so generated will be ofimmense help to Indian Police Department to utilize GIS tools and techniques instead oftraditional pin and dot maps to determine spatio-temporal crime pattern as well as tocapture crime series and forecast future crime occurrences. The public can also beeducated with the visual information obtained through GIS analysis to clarify crimeconcerns and enlist community action and finally to arrive at reducing overall crimedisorders.Key words: GIS, GPS, Hot spot analysis, Buffer analysis, Crime analysis

    Harnessing ornamental fisheries resources for sustainable growth and development: A trade perspective from Kerala, India

    Ornamental fish trade has gained paramount importance with more than 125 countries involved in the freshwater and marine fishes. The global trade is estimated to be around US $ 450 million registering a growth rate of ten percent since 2001. Asia caters up to 60 per cent of the global trade while India stands with a dismal 0.9 per cent with a portfolio of 30-35 fresh water species. The ornamental fish resources of Kerala has huge potential with untapped and unexploited resources. However the performance of the sector is not worthy and production is much below the demand. The SWOL analysis - Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Limitations analysis - is done to analyse the status of ornamental fish industry in Kerala. The results indicated that good export market, high demand, availability of under-utilized marine resources, potential for rural development, low cost effort, efficiency of ornamental fish marketers, institutional support for development and promotions were the major strengths. Dependence on wild caught species, inadequate data on resources, wastage of resources, unwillingness towards marine fishes, lack of trained/ skilled manpower and organized trade, lack of adept technologies, poor marketing facilities, backwardness in international market, weak market image and lack of fishing regulations were the major inherent weaknesses. The major opportunities were enhancement of species portfolio, increasing market value, less capital intensive, high popularity and demand, breeding and culture of indigenous fishes, faster market growth, entry to new market destinations, increased awareness of international buyers and support of government. Technological backwardness, technology transfer, insufficient awareness programmes, adverse government policies, competitions from neighboring countries, sustainability of resources and drastic drop in fish prices were the major limitations. The study suggests concerted efforts by the different stakeholders to enhance the production of the sector

    Student engagement in online learning during COVID-19

    Online teaching and learning have become the novel norm amidst COVID-19 pandemic crisis across the world. The educational institutions across the world have switched to online mode of instruction to continue to provide education. Thus, research on effectiveness of online teaching and factors affecting the student’s engagement in a virtual classroom has gained importance. Students during pandemic are learning at home and lack motivation and confidence in their academic life. The present study aimed to analyse the student engagement and the factors that affect the student engagement in online learning environment. The study employed a quantitative research design to collect data from 600 students attending online classes in schools and colleges of Bangalore, India. The study found that there is a positive correlation between students’ intrinsic motivation and student engagement. Student engagement increases as the academic pressure or tension decreases. The core findings of the study showed that interest towards learning, perceived competence, and perceived choice of students determines student engagement in online classroom. Almost 33.7 % variance in student engagement is because of students’ intrinsic motivation. Future researchers may explore external factors affecting student engagement. Student engagement is significant for meaningful learning in online learning environment
