Downwind rotor horizontal axis wind turbine noise prediction
NASA and industry are currently cooperating in the conduct of extensive experimental and analytical studies to understand and predict the noise of large, horizontal axis wind turbines. This effort consists of (1) obtaining high quality noise data under well controlled and documented test conditions, (2) establishing the annoyance criteria for impulse noise of the type generated by horizontal axis wind turbines with rotors downwind of the support tower, (3) defining the wake characteristics downwind of the axial location of the plane of rotation, (4) comparing predictions with measurements made by use of wake data, and (5) comparing predictions with annoyance criteria. The status of work by Hamilton Standard in the above areas which was done in support of the cooperative NASA and industry studies is briefly summarized
Experimental Observation of a Fundamental Length Scale of Waves in Random Media
Waves propagating through a weakly scattering random medium show a pronounced
branching of the flow accompanied by the formation of freak waves, i.e.,
extremely intense waves. Theory predicts that this strong fluctuation regime is
accompanied by its own fundamental length scale of transport in random media,
parametrically different from the mean free path or the localization length. We
show numerically how the scintillation index can be used to assess the scaling
behavior of the branching length. We report the experimental observation of
this scaling using microwave transport experiments in quasi-two-dimensional
resonators with randomly distributed weak scatterers. Remarkably, the scaling
range extends much further than expected from random caustics statistics.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
A Definitive Optical Detection of a Supercluster at z = 0.91
We present the results from a multi-band optical imaging program which has
definitively confirmed the existence of a supercluster at z = 0.91. Two massive
clusters of galaxies, CL1604+4304 at z = 0.897 and CL1604+4321 at z = 0.924,
were originally observed in the high-redshift cluster survey of Oke, Postman &
Lubin (1998). They are separated by 4300 km/s in radial velocity and 17
arcminutes on the plane of the sky. Their physical and redshift proximity
suggested a promising supercluster candidate. Deep BRi imaging of the region
between the two clusters indicates a large population of red galaxies. This
population forms a tight, red sequence in the color--magnitude diagram at (R-i)
= 1.4. The characteristic color is identical to that of the
spectroscopically-confirmed early-type galaxies in the two member clusters. The
red galaxies are spread throughout the 5 Mpc region between CL1604+4304 and
CL1604+4321. Their spatial distribution delineates the entire large scale
structure with high concentrations at the cluster centers. In addition, we
detect a significant overdensity of red galaxies directly between CL1604+4304
and CL1604+4321 which is the signature of a third, rich cluster associated with
this system. The strong sequence of red galaxies and their spatial distribution
clearly indicate that we have discovered a supercluster at z = 0.91.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters. 13 pages,

Surface chemistry of selected lunar regions
A completely new analysis has been carried out on the data from the Apollo 15 and 16 gamma ray spectrometer experiments. The components of the continuum background have been estimated. The elements Th, K, Fe and Mg give useful results; results for Ti are significant only for a few high Ti regions. Errors are given, and the results are checked by other methods. Concentrations are reported for about sixty lunar regions; the ground track has been subdivided in various ways. The borders of the maria seem well-defined chemically, while the distribution of KREEP is broad. This wide distribution requires emplacement of KREEP before the era of mare formation. Its high concentration in western mare soils seems to require major vertical mixing

The main aspects of the attitude control system used on both the IMP-H and J spacecraft are presented. The mechanical configuration is described. Information on all the specific components comprising the flight system is provided. The acceptance and qualification testing of both individual components and the installed system are summarized. Functional information regarding the operation and performance in relation to the orbiting spacecraft and its mission is included. Related topics which are discussed are: (1) safety requirements, (2) servicing procedures, (3) anomalous behavior, and (4) pyrotechnic devices
Lunar elemental analysis obtained from the Apollo gamma-ray and X-ray remote sensing experiment
Gamma-ray and X-ray spectrometers carried in the service modules of the Apollo 15 and Apollo 16 spacecraft were employed for compositional mapping of the lunar surface. The measurements involved the observation of the intensity and characteristic energy distribution of gamma rays and X-rays emitted from the lunar surface. A large-scale compositional map of over 10 percent of the lunar surface was obtained from an analysis of the observed spectra. The objective of the X-ray experiment was to measure the K spectral lines from Mg, Al, and Si. Spectra were obtained and the data were reduced to Al/Si and Mg/Si intensity ratios and ultimately to chemical ratios. Analyses of the results have indicated (1) that the Al/Si ratios are highest in the lunar highlands and considerably lower in the maria, and (2) that the Mg/Si concentrations generally show the opposite relationship. The objective of the gamma-ray experiment was to measure the natural and cosmic-ray-induced activity emission spectrum. At this time, the elemental abundances for Th, U, K, Fe, Ti, Si, and O have been determined over a number of major lunar regions. Regions of relatively high natural radioactivity were found in the Mare Imbrium and Oceanus Procellarum regions
