    Micro-simulating child poverty in 2010 and 2020

    Get PDF
The 2008 Pre-Budget Report (PBR) said that 'the Government will take stock of progress towards its 2010 and 2020 child poverty target in the [2009] Budget'. As background to that exercise, this paper updates our previous analysis of the prospects for child poverty in the UK in 2010-11 and 2020-21

Reflection high-energy electron diffraction analysis of polycrystalline films with grain size and orientation distributions

We report a computationally efficient algorithm to calculate reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) intensities from well-textured, small-grained polycrystalline films in the kinematic limit. We also show how the intensity maps of the spots in a RHEED pattern from such a film can be quantitatively analyzed to determine the film's average grain size, as well as its in-plane orientation and texture distributions. We find that the in-plane orientation and texture distribution widths of these films can be determined to within 1 degree and that the average lateral grain size can be measured to within a fraction of a nanometer after suitable calibration of our technique

Correction factors for on-line microprobe analysis of multielement alloy systems

    Get PDF
An on-line correction technique was developed for the conversion of electron probe X-ray intensities into concentrations of emitting elements. This technique consisted of off-line calculation and representation of binary interaction data which were read into an on-line minicomputer to calculate variable correction coefficients. These coefficients were used to correct the X-ray data without significantly increasing computer core requirements. The binary interaction data were obtained by running Colby's MAGIC 4 program in the reverse mode. The data for each binary interaction were represented by polynomial coefficients obtained by least-squares fitting a third-order polynomial. Polynomial coefficients were generated for most of the common binary interactions at different accelerating potentials and are included. Results are presented for the analyses of several alloy standards to demonstrate the applicability of this correction procedure

Reflection high-energy electron diffraction experimental analysis of polycrystalline MgO films with grain size and orientation distributions

    Get PDF
Analysis of biaxial texture of MgO films grown by ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) has been performed using a quantitative reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) based method. MgO biaxial texture is determined by analysis of diffraction spot shapes from single RHEED images, and by measuring the width of RHEED in-plane rocking curves for MgO films grown on amorphous Si3N4 by IBAD using 750 eV Ar+ ions, at 45° incidence angle, and MgO e-beam evaporation. RHEED-based biaxial texture measurement accuracy is verified by comparison with in-plane and out-of-plane orientation distribution measurements made using transmission electron microscopy and x-ray rocking curves. In situ RHEED measurements also enable the analysis of the evolution of the biaxial texture which narrows with increasing film thickness. RHEED-based measurements of IBAD MgO biaxial texture show that the minimum in-plane orientation distribution depends on the out-of-plane orientation distribution, and indicates that the minimum obtainable in-plane orientation on distribution is 2°

A comparison of Bayesian and Fourier methods for frequency determination in asteroseismology

Bayesian methods are becoming more widely used in asteroseismic analysis. In particular, they are being used to determine oscillation frequencies, which are also commonly found by Fourier analysis. It is important to establish whether the Bayesian methods provide an improvement on Fourier methods. We compare, using simulated data, the standard iterative sine-wave fitting method against a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) code that has been introduced to infer purely the frequencies of oscillation modes (Brewer et al. 2007). A uniform prior probability distribution function is used for the MCMC method. We find the methods do equally well at determining the correct oscillation frequencies, although the Bayesian method is able to highlight the possibility of a misidentification due to aliasing, which can be useful. In general, we suggest that the least computationally intensive method is preferable.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Communications in Asterosesimolog

NASA participation in the 1980 PEPE/NEROS project: Data archive

    Get PDF
Eight experimental air quality measurement systems were investigated during July and August 1980 as part of the EPA PEPE/NEROS fiel measurement program. Data from those efforts have been entered into an archive that may be accessed by other researchers. The data sets consists of airborne measurements of regional mixed layer heights and aerosol and ozone distributions as well as point measurements of meteorological parameters and ozone obtained during diurnal transitions in the planetary boundary layer. This report gives a discussion of each measurement system, a preliminary assessment of data quality, a description of the archive format for each data set, and a summary of several proposed scientific studies which will utilize these data
