VAST: An ASKAP Survey for Variables and Slow Transients
The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) will give us an
unprecedented opportunity to investigate the transient sky at radio
wavelengths. In this paper we present VAST, an ASKAP survey for Variables and
Slow Transients. VAST will exploit the wide-field survey capabilities of ASKAP
to enable the discovery and investigation of variable and transient phenomena
from the local to the cosmological, including flare stars, intermittent
pulsars, X-ray binaries, magnetars, extreme scattering events, interstellar
scintillation, radio supernovae and orphan afterglows of gamma ray bursts. In
addition, it will allow us to probe unexplored regions of parameter space where
new classes of transient sources may be detected. In this paper we review the
known radio transient and variable populations and the current results from
blind radio surveys. We outline a comprehensive program based on a multi-tiered
survey strategy to characterise the radio transient sky through detection and
monitoring of transient and variable sources on the ASKAP imaging timescales of
five seconds and greater. We also present an analysis of the expected source

Combinations of IFN-gamma and IL-4 Induce Distinct Profiles of Dendritic Cell Associated Immunoregulatory Properties
Interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) and interleukin-4 (IL-4) are not only generated during cell-mediated immunity (CMI) and humoral immunity (HI), but are also generated by innate immune cells in response to pathogenic factors. How these cytokines differentially effect the development of dendritic cell (DC)-associated immunoregulatory properties from progenitor cells during innate immunity is unresolved. To address this we have utilized a homogeneous DC progenitor-like cell line, MTHC-D2, as a model to examine cytokine-induced maturation of DCs. By 6 h IFN-gamma induced genes that are important for antiviral activity and development of CMI, whereas IL-4 induced genes involved in cellular adhesion, uptake of extracellular antigen, suppression of cytotoxic T-cell responses, and that repair the extracellular matrix. By 48 h the cytokine stimulus had induced many properties characteristic of immature DCs; however, these were differentially effected by IFN-gamma and IL-4. IFN-gamma induced the greatest levels of costimulatory/ activation marker expression, and the highest levels of T-cell proliferation, whereas IL-4 induced the greatest levels of phagocytic activity. Stimulation of the cells with CD40 Ab enhanced the levels of costimulatory marker expression and T-cell stimulatory capacity of cells exposed to IFN-gamma, but had little effect on cells exposed to IL-4 in the absence of IFN-gamma
A survey for transients and variables with the Murchison Widefield Array 32-tile prototype at 154 MHz
We present a search for transient and variable radio sources at 154 MHz with the Murchison Widefield Array 32-tile prototype. Fifty-one images were obtained that cover a field of view of 1430 deg2 centred on Hydra A. The observations were obtained over three days in 2010 March and three days in 2011 April and May. The mean cadence of the observations was 26 minutes and there was additional temporal information on day and year timescales. We explore the variability of a sample of 105 low frequency radio sources within the field. Four bright (S > 6 Jy) candidate variable radio sources were identified that displayed low levels of short timescale variability (26 minutes). We conclude that this variability is likely caused by simplifications in the calibration strategy or ionospheric effects. On the timescale of one year we find two sources that show significant variability. We attribute this variability to either refractive scintillation or intrinsic variability. No radio transients were identified and we place an upper limit on the surface density of sources p 5.5 Jy, and characteristic timescales of both 26 minutes and one year
