    Complex-Temperature Singularities in the d=2d=2 Ising Model. III. Honeycomb Lattice

    We study complex-temperature properties of the uniform and staggered susceptibilities χ\chi and χ(a)\chi^{(a)} of the Ising model on the honeycomb lattice. From an analysis of low-temperature series expansions, we find evidence that χ\chi and χ(a)\chi^{(a)} both have divergent singularities at the point z=1zz=-1 \equiv z_{\ell} (where z=e2Kz=e^{-2K}), with exponents γ=γ,a=5/2\gamma_{\ell}'= \gamma_{\ell,a}'=5/2. The critical amplitudes at this singularity are calculated. Using exact results, we extract the behaviour of the magnetisation MM and specific heat CC at complex-temperature singularities. We find that, in addition to its zero at the physical critical point, MM diverges at z=1z=-1 with exponent β=1/4\beta_{\ell}=-1/4, vanishes continuously at z=±iz=\pm i with exponent βs=3/8\beta_s=3/8, and vanishes discontinuously elsewhere along the boundary of the complex-temperature ferromagnetic phase. CC diverges at z=1z=-1 with exponent α=2\alpha_{\ell}'=2 and at v=±i/3v=\pm i/\sqrt{3} (where v=tanhKv = \tanh K) with exponent αe=1\alpha_e=1, and diverges logarithmically at z=±iz=\pm i. We find that the exponent relation α+2β+γ=2\alpha'+2\beta+\gamma'=2 is violated at z=1z=-1; the right-hand side is 4 rather than 2.     Statistics of lattice animals (polyominoes) and polygons

    We have developed an improved algorithm that allows us to enumerate the number of site animals (polyominoes) on the square lattice up to size 46. Analysis of the resulting series yields an improved estimate, τ=4.062570(8)\tau = 4.062570(8), for the growth constant of lattice animals and confirms to a very high degree of certainty that the generating function has a logarithmic divergence. We prove the bound τ>3.90318.\tau > 3.90318. We also calculate the radius of gyration of both lattice animals and polygons enumerated by area. The analysis of the radius of gyration series yields the estimate ν=0.64115(5)\nu = 0.64115(5), for both animals and polygons enumerated by area. The mean perimeter of polygons of area nn is also calculated. A number of new amplitude estimates are given.Comment: 10 pages, 2 eps figure

    The Gibbs-Thomson formula at small island sizes - corrections for high vapour densities

    In this paper we report simulation studies of equilibrium features, namely circular islands on model surfaces, using Monte-Carlo methods. In particular, we are interested in studying the relationship between the density of vapour around a curved island and its curvature-the Gibbs-Thomson formula. Numerical simulations of a lattice gas model, performed for various sizes of islands, don't fit very well to the Gibbs-Thomson formula. We show how corrections to this form arise at high vapour densities, wherein a knowledge of the exact equation of state (as opposed to the ideal gas approximation) is necessary to predict this relationship. Exploiting a mapping of the lattice gas to the Ising model one can compute the corrections to the Gibbs-Thomson formula using high field series expansions. We also investigate finite size effects on the stability of the islands both theoretically and through simulations. Finally the simulations are used to study the microscopic origins of the Gibbs-Thomson formula. A heuristic argument is suggested in which it is partially attributed to geometric constraints on the island edge.Comment: 27 pages including 7 figures, tarred, gzipped and uuencoded.     Series expansions without diagrams

    We discuss the use of recursive enumeration schemes to obtain low and high temperature series expansions for discrete statistical systems. Using linear combinations of generalized helical lattices, the method is competitive with diagramatic approaches and is easily generalizable. We illustrate the approach using the Ising model and generate low temperature series in up to five dimensions and high temperature series in three dimensions.     Zeros of the Partition Function for Higher--Spin 2D Ising Models

    We present calculations of the complex-temperature zeros of the partition functions for 2D Ising models on the square lattice with spin s=1s=1, 3/2, and 2. These give insight into complex-temperature phase diagrams of these models in the thermodynamic limit. Support is adduced for a conjecture that all divergences of the magnetisation occur at endpoints of arcs of zeros protruding into the FM phase. We conjecture that there are 4[s2]24[s^2]-2 such arcs for s1s \ge 1, where [x][x] denotes the integral part of xx.Comment: 8 pages, latex, 3 uuencoded figure

    There is strong evidence that rare copy number variants (CNVs) have a role in susceptibility to autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Much research has focused on how CNVs mediate a phenotypic effect by altering gene expression levels. We investigated an alternative mechanism whereby CNVs combine the 5' and 3' ends of two genes, creating a 'fusion gene'. Any resulting mRNA with an open reading frame could potentially alter the phenotype via a gain-of-function mechanism. We examined 2382 and 3096 rare CNVs from 996 individuals with ASD and 1287 controls, respectively, for potential to generate fusion transcripts. There was no increased burden in individuals with ASD; 122/996 cases harbored at least one rare CNV of this type, compared with 179/1287 controls (P=0.89). There was also no difference in the overall frequency distribution between cases and controls. We examined specific examples of such CNVs nominated by case-control analysis and a candidate approach. Accordingly, a duplication involving REEP1-POLR1A (found in 3/996 cases and 0/1287 controls) and a single occurrence CNV involving KIAA0319-TDP2 were tested. However, no fusion transcripts were detected by RT-PCR. Analysis of additional samples based on cell line availability resulted in validation of a MAPKAPK5-ACAD10 fusion transcript in two probands. However, this variant was present in controls at a similar rate and is unlikely to influence ASD susceptibility. In summary, although we find no evidence that fusion-gene generating CNVs lead to ASD susceptibility, discovery of a MAPKAPK5-ACAD10 transcript with an estimated frequency of ~1/200 suggests that gain-of-function mechanisms should be considered in future CNVs studies

It combines an analytical description of the turbulent wind velocity field above the dune with a continuum saltation model that allows for saturation transients in the sand flux.     Determination of the bond percolation threshold for the Kagome lattice

    The hull-gradient method is used to determine the critical threshold for bond percolation on the two-dimensional Kagome lattice (and its dual, the dice lattice). For this system, the hull walk is represented as a self-avoiding trail, or mirror-model trajectory, on the (3,4,6,4)-Archimedean tiling lattice.     Square lattice site percolation at increasing ranges of neighbor interactions

    We report site percolation thresholds for square lattice with neighbor interactions at various increasing ranges. Using Monte Carlo techniques we found that nearest neighbors (N2^2), next nearest neighbors (N3^3), next next nearest neighbors (N4^4) and fifth nearest neighbors (N6^6) yield the same pc=0.592...p_c=0.592.... At odds, fourth nearest neighbors (N5^5) give pc=0.298...p_c=0.298.... These results are given an explanation in terms of symmetry arguments. We then consider combinations of various ranges of interactions with (N2^2+N3^3), (N2^2+N4^4), (N2^2+N3^3+N4^4) and (N2^2+N5^5). The calculated associated thresholds are respectively pc=0.407...,0.337...,0.288...,0.234...p_c=0.407..., 0.337..., 0.288..., 0.234.... The existing Galam--Mauger universal formula for percolation thresholds does not reproduce the data showing dimension and coordination number are not sufficient to build a universal law which extends to complex lattices.Comment: 4 pages, revtex
