Exploring Millions of 6-State FSSP Solutions: the Formal Notion of Local CA Simulation
In this paper, we come back on the notion of local simulation allowing to
transform a cellular automaton into a closely related one with different local
encoding of information. This notion is used to explore solutions of the Firing
Squad Synchronization Problem that are minimal both in time (2n -- 2 for n
cells) and, up to current knowledge, also in states (6 states). While only one
such solution was proposed by Mazoyer since 1987, 718 new solutions have been
generated by Clergue, Verel and Formenti in 2018 with a cluster of machines. We
show here that, starting from existing solutions, it is possible to generate
millions of such solutions using local simulations using a single common
personal computer
Cellular structure of -Brauer algebras
In this paper we consider the -Brauer algebra over a commutative
noetherian domain. We first construct a new basis for -Brauer algebras, and
we then prove that it is a cell basis, and thus these algebras are cellular in
the sense of Graham and Lehrer. In particular, they are shown to be an iterated
inflation of Hecke algebras of type Moreover, when is a field of
arbitrary characteristic, we determine for which parameters the -Brauer
algebras are quasi-heredity. So the general theory of cellular algebras and
quasi-hereditary algebras applies to -Brauer algebras. As a consequence, we
can determine all irreducible representations of -Brauer algebras by linear
algebra methods
The Unidimensional Solidification of a Binary Eutectic System Willi a Time- Dependent Surface Temperature 1
The realistic boundary condition of the surface temperature varying with time is used in the heat transfer analysis of the solidification of a binary eutectic alloy system. The system occupies a semi-infinite region and consists of a solid zone, a freezing zone, and a liquid zone. The heat released in the freezing zone is treated as a discontinuous heal generation. The solid-fraction distribution in the freezing zone, given as a function of temperature, is solved simultaneously with the temperature distribution, which is given as a function of distance within the freezing zone. Using the "heat balance integral" technique, the method for the solution of the temperature distribution and the thickness of each region is given. A s an example, the results are shown in graphical form for an Al-5 percent Cu alloy
Transition Matrix Monte Carlo Reweighting and Dynamics
We study an induced dynamics in the space of energy of single-spin-flip Monte
Carlo algorithm. The method gives an efficient reweighting technique. This
dynamics is shown to have relaxation times proportional to the specific heat.
Thus, it is plausible for a logarithmic factor in the correlation time of the
standard 2D Ising local dynamics.Comment: RevTeX, 5 pages, 3 figure
Transport and Boundary Scattering in Confined Geometries: Analytical Results
We utilize a geometric argument to determine the effects of boundary
scattering on the carrier mean-free path in samples of various cross sections.
Analytic expressions for samples with rectangular and circular cross sections
are obtained. We also outline a method for incorporating these results into
calculations of the thermal conductivity.Comment: 35 pages, Late
Determination of the complex microwave photoconductance of a single quantum dot
A small quantum dot containing approximately 20 electrons is realized in a
two-dimensional electron system of an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. Conventional
transport and microwave spectroscopy reveal the dot's electronic structure. By
applying a coherently coupled two-source technique, we are able to determine
the complex microwave induced tunnel current. The amplitude of this
photoconductance resolves photon-assisted tunneling (PAT) in the non-linear
regime through the ground state and an excited state as well. The out-of-phase
component (susceptance) allows to study charge relaxation within the quantum
dot on a time scale comparable to the microwave beat period.Comment: 5.5 pages, 6 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev. B (Jan. B15 2001
Magnetic behaviour of Eu_2CuSi_3: Large negative magnetoresistance above Curie temperature
We report here the results of magnetic susceptibility,
electrical-resistivity, magnetoresistance (MR), heat-capacity and ^{151}Eu
Mossbauer effect measurements on the compound, Eu_2CuSi_3, crystallizing in an
AlB_2-derived hexagonal structure. The results establish that Eu ions are
divalent, undergoing long-range ferromagnetic-ordering below (T_C=) 37 K. An
interesting observation is that the sign of MR is negative even at temperatures
close to 3T_C, with increasing magnitude with decreasing temperature exhibiting
a peak at T_C. This observation, being made for a Cu containing magnetic
rare-earth compound for the first time, is of relevance to the field of
collosal magnetoresistance.Comment: To appear in PRB, RevTex, 4 pages text + 6 psFigs. Related to our
