Side-chain liquid crystalline poly(4,4'-biphenylyl methacrylate) was studied by X-ray diffraction. Three smectic phases were described using a ribbon-like structural model for the polymer chain. In the smectic SP phase, ribbons lie flat on their sides to form layers with a spacing equal to the thickness of the ribbons. In the smectic SA phase, the ribbons stand upright giving layers with a thickness corresponding to the length of one extended monomeric unit. In the ordered smectic So phase, the layer thickness also corresponds to one extended repeat unit, and the pendant groups are arranged according to a two-dimensional oblique lattice. The Schlieren texture observed in the SP phase was analysed in terms of symmetry.

Magnetic properties of biogenic selenium nanomaterials

International audienceBioreduction of selenium oxyanions to elemental selenium is ubiquitous; elucidating the properties of this biogenic elemental selenium (BioSe) is thus important to understand its environmental fate. In this study, the magnetic properties of biogenic elemental selenium nanospheres (BioSe-Nanospheres) and nanorods (BioSe-Nanorods) obtained via the reduction of selenium(IV) using anaerobic granular sludge taken from an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating paper and pulp wastewater were investigated. The study indicated that the BioSe nanomaterials have a strong paramagnetic contribution with some ferromagnetic component due to the incorporation of Fe(III) (high-spin and low-spin species) as indicated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The paramagnetism did not saturate up to 50,000 Oe at 5 K, and the hysteresis curve showed the coercivity of 100 Oe and magnetic moment saturation around 10 emu. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and EPR evidenced the presence of Fe(III) in the nanomaterial. Signals for Fe(II) were observed neither in EPR nor in XPS ruling out its presence in the BioSe nanoparticles. Fe(III) being abundantly present in the sludge likely got entrapped in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) coating the biogenic nanomaterials. The presence of Fe(III) in BioSe nanomaterial increases the mobility of Fe(III) and may have an effect on phytoplankton growth in the environment. Furthermore, as supported by the literature, there is a potential to exploit the magnetic properties of BioSe nanomaterials in drug delivery systems as well as in space refrigeration

Phylogeny, biogeography and diversification patterns of side-necked turtles (Testudines: Pleurodira)

Pleurodires or side-necked turtles are today restricted to freshwater environments of South America, Africa– Madagascar and Australia, but in the past they were distributed much more broadly, being found also on Eurasia, India and North America, and marine environments. Two hypotheses were proposed to explain this distribution; in the first, vicariance would have shaped the current geographical distribution and, in the second, extinctions constrained a previously widespread distribution. Here, we aim to reconstruct pleurodiran biogeographic history and diversification patterns based on a new phylogenetic hypothesis recovered from the analysis of the largest morphological dataset yet compiled for the lineage, testing which biogeographical process prevailed during its evolutionary history. The resulting topology generally agrees with previous hypotheses of the group and shows that most diversification shifts were related to the exploration of new niches, e.g. littoral or marine radiations. In addition, as other turtles, pleurodires do not seem to have been much affected by either the Cretaceous– Palaeogene or the Eocene–Oligocene mass extinctions. The biogeographic analyses highlight the predominance of both anagenetic and cladogenetic dispersal events and support the importance of transoceanic dispersals as a more common driver of area changes than previously thought, agreeing with previous studies with other non-turtle lineages.Fil: Ferreira, Gabriel S.. G0^0 Electronics and Data Acquisition (Forward-Angle Measurements)

The G0^0 parity-violation experiment at Jefferson Lab (Newport News, VA) is designed to determine the contribution of strange/anti-strange quark pairs to the intrinsic properties of the proton. In the forward-angle part of the experiment, the asymmetry in the cross section was measured for ep\vec{e}p elastic scattering by counting the recoil protons corresponding to the two beam-helicity states. Due to the high accuracy required on the asymmetry, the G0^0 experiment was based on a custom experimental setup with its own associated electronics and data acquisition (DAQ) system. Highly specialized time-encoding electronics provided time-of-flight spectra for each detector for each helicity state. More conventional electronics was used for monitoring (mainly FastBus). The time-encoding electronics and the DAQ system have been designed to handle events at a mean rate of 2 MHz per detector with low deadtime and to minimize helicity-correlated systematic errors. In this paper, we outline the general architecture and the main features of the electronics and the DAQ system dedicated to G0^0 forward-angle measurements.Comment: 35 pages. 17 figures. Vapor-phase synthesis, growth mechanism and thickness-independent elastic modulus of single-crystal tungsten nanobelts

Single-crystal tungsten nanobelts with thicknesses from tens to hundreds of nanometers, widths of several micrometers and lengths of tens of micrometers were synthesized using chemical vapor deposition. Surface energy minimization was believed to have played a crucial role in the growth of the synthesized nanobelts enclosed by the low-energy {110} crystal planes of body-centered-cubic structure. The anisotropic growth of the crystallographically equivalent {110} crystal planes could be attributable to the asymmetric concentration distribution of the tungsten atom vapor around the nanobelts during the growth process. The elastic moduli of the synthesized tungsten nanobelts with thicknesses ranging from 65 to 306 nm were accurately measured using a newly developed thermal vibration method. The measured modulus values of the tungsten nanobelts were thickness-dependent. After eliminating the effect of surface oxidization using a core-shell model, the elastic modulus of tungsten nanobelts became constant, which is close to that of the bulk tungsten value of 410 GPa
