    Transfer of ultra-low phase noise microwave references over the JANET Aurora fibre network using a femtosecond optical frequency comb

    An ultra-low phase noise microwave frequency is transferred over 82 km of installed fibre by propagation of a 30 nm bandwidth optical frequency comb (104 modes). The phase noise induced along the fibre by vibrations and thermal effects is suppressed by implementing a noise cancellation scheme where a portion of the light is sent back to the transmitter through the same fibre. The 6th harmonic of the repetition rate detected before and after the pulse train has travelled a round trip are phase compared and used to generate an error signal that controls a fibre stretcher to compensate for the fibre-induced phase fluctuations. Optical amplifiers are used to compensate for the fibre attenuation and dispersion compensation modules are also employed

    Reclaiming literacies: competing textual practices in a digital higher education

    This essay examines the implications of the ubiquitous use of the term ‘digital literacies’ in higher education and its increasing alignment with institutional and organisational imperatives. It suggests that the term has been stripped of its provenance and association with disciplinary knowledge production and textual practice. Instead it is called into service rhetorically in order to promote competency based agendas both in and outside the academy. The piece also points to a tendency to position teachers in deficit with regard to their technological capabilities and pay scant attention to their own disciplinary and scholarly practices in a digital world. It concludes that there is a case for building on established theoretical and conceptual frameworks from literacy studies if we wish to integrate advantages of the digital landscape with thoughtful teaching practice

    Characterizing Episodic Memory Retrieval: Electrophysiological Evidence for Diminished Familiarity following Unitization

    Episodic memory relies on both recollection and familiarity; why these processes are differentially engaged during retrieval remains unclear. Traditionally, recollection has been considered necessary for tasks requiring associative retrieval, whereas familiarity supports recognition of items. Recently, however, familiarity has been shown to contribute to associative recognition if stimuli are "unitized" at encoding (a single representation is created from multiple elements)-the "benefit" of unitization. Here, we ask if there is also a "cost" of unitization; are the elements of unitized representations less accessible via familiarity? We manipulated unitization during encoding and used ERPs to index familiarity and recollection at retrieval. The data revealed a selective reduction in the neural correlate of familiarity for individual words originally encoded in unitized compared with nonunitized word pairs. This finding reveals a measurable cost of unitization, suggesting that the nature of to-be-remembered stimuli is critical in determining whether familiarity contributes to episodic memory

    This paper describes an action research project on postgraduate students’ scholarly writing in which I employed reflective approaches to examine and enhance my postgraduate supervisory practice. My reflections on three distinct cycles of supervision illustrate a shift in thinking about scholarly writing and an evolving understanding of how to support postgraduate students’ writing. These understandings provide the foundation for a future-oriented fourth cycle of supervisory practice, which is characterised by three principles, namely the empowerment of students as writers, the technological context of contemporary writing, and ethical issues in writing

    Crystal Field, Magnetic Anisotropy and Excitations in Rare-Earth Hexaborides

    We clarify the role of crystalline electric field (CEF) induced magnetic anisotropy in the ground state and spin-wave spectrum of cubic rare-earth materials with dominating isotropic magnetic exchange interactions. In particular we study the hexaboride NdB_6 which is shown to exhibit strong spin-quadrupolar coupling. The CEF scheme is analyzed and a non-collinear magnetization response is found. The spin orientation in the antiferromagnetically ordered ground-state is identified. Moreover, the spin excitations are evaluated and in agreement with inelastic neutron scattering a suppression of one of the two magnetic modes in the strong-coupling regime is predicted.Comment: 4 pages, 1 eps-figur

    Going deeper into the toxicokinetics of synthetic cannabinoids: in vitro contribution of human carboxylesterases

    Synthetic cannabinoids (SC) are new psychoactive substances known to cause intoxications and fatalities. One reason may be the limited data available concerning the toxicokinetics of SC, but toxicity mechanisms are insufficiently understood so far. Human carboxylesterases (hCES) are widely known to play a crucial role in the catalytic hydrolysis of drugs (of abuse). The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro contribution of hCES to the metabolism of the 13 SC 3,5-AB-5F-FUPPYCA, AB-5F-P7AICA, A-CHMINACA, DMBA-CHMINACA, MBA-CHMINACA, MDMB-4F-BINACA, MDMB-4en-PINACA, MDMB-FUBICA, MDMB-5F-PICA, MMB-CHMICA, MMB-4en-PICA, MMB-FUBINACA, and MPhP-5F-PICA. The SC were incubated with recombinant hCES1b, hCES1c, or hCES2 and analyzed by liquid chromatography–ion trap mass spectrometry to assess amide or ester hydrolysis in an initial activity screening. Enzyme kinetic studies were performed if sufficient hydrolysis was observed. No hydrolysis of the amide linker was observed using those experimental conditions. Except for MDMB-5F-PICA, ester hydrolysis was always detected if an ester group was present in the head group. In general, SC with a terminal ester bearing a small alcohol part and a larger acyl part showed higher affinity to hCES1 isozymes. Due to the low hydrolysis rates, enzyme kinetics could not be modeled for the SC with a tert-leucine-derived moiety, but hydrolysis reactions of MPhP-5F-PICA and of those containing a valine-derived moiety followed classic Michaelis–Menten kinetics. In conclusion, drug–drug/drug–food interactions or hCES polymorphisms may prolong the half-life of SC and the current results help to estimate the risk of toxicity in the future after combining them with activity and clinical data

    Magneto-shear modes and a.c. dissipation in a two-dimensional Wigner crystal

    The a.c. response of an unpinned and finite 2D Wigner crystal to electric fields at an angular frequency ω\omega has been calculated in the dissipative limit, ωτ1\omega \tau \ll 1, where τ1\tau ^{-1} is the scattering rate. For electrons screened by parallel electrodes, in zero magnetic field the long-wavelength excitations are a diffusive longitudinal transmission line mode and a diffusive shear mode. A magnetic field couples these modes together to form two new magneto-shear modes. The dimensionless coupling parameter β=2(ct/cl)σxy/σxx\beta =2(c_{t}/c_{l})|\sigma_{xy}/\sigma_{xx}| where ctc_{t} and clc_{l} are the speeds of transverse and longitudinal sound in the collisionless limit and σxy\sigma_{xy} and σxx\sigma_{xx} are the tensor components of the magnetoconductivity. For β1\beta \geqslant 1, both the coupled modes contribute to the response of 2D electrons in a Corbino disk measurement of magnetoconductivity. For β1\beta \gg 1, the electron crystal rotates rigidly in a magnetic field. In general, both the amplitude and phase of the measured a.c. currents are changed by the shear modulus.     Interpocket polarization model for magnetic structures in rare-earth hexaborides

    The origin of peculiar magnetic structures in cubic rare-earth (R) hexaborides RB_6 is traced back to their characteristic band structure. The three sphere-like Fermi surfaces induce interpocket polarization of the conduction band as a part of a RKKY-type interaction. It is shown for the free-electron-like model that the interpocket polarization gives rise to a broad maximum in the intersite interaction I(q) around q=(1/4,1/4,1/2) in the Brillouin zone. This maximum is consistent with the superstructure observed in R=Ce, Gd and Dy. The wave-number dependence of I(q) is independently extracted from analysis of the spin-wave spectrum measured for NdB_6. It is found that I(q) obtained from fitting the data has a similarly to that derived by the interpocket polarization model, except that the absolute maximum now occurs at (0,0,1/2) in consistency with the A-type structure. The overall shape of I(q) gives a hint toward understanding an incommensurate structure in PrB_6 as well.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to J.Phys.Soc.Jp

    New insights into the cardiorespiratory physiology of weaned southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina)

    Southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) pups must strike a balance between conserving energy during their post-weaning fast and simultaneously developing diving abilities to attain nutritional independence. Little is known about environmental influences on cardiorespiratory patterns, hence energy use, throughout the 6 week fast. Continuous heart rates were recorded for free-ranging, newly weaned southern elephant seals using heart rate time-depth recorders for 5-9 days at Sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island, during October 1994 (n = 1), 1995 (n = 4) and 1996 (n = 1). Daytime observations of respiration and behaviour were made throughout. We present the first instance of synchronous heart rate traces recorded simultaneously for individual weaners. Generalized additive models revealed that a sinusoidal pattern of diurnal heart rate elevation and nocturnal depression was evident in all seals and, on at least one occasion, a conspicuous break in this pattern coincided with an extreme cold weather event. Seals in this study were capable of considerable cardiorespiratory control and regularly demonstrated bradycardia during periods of resting apnoea. Apnoeic duration ranged from 33 to 291 s (mean 134 s). Apnoeic heart rates (mean 67 ± 15 beats min(-1), range 40-114 beats min(-1)) were on average 19.7% lower than those exhibited during periods of eupnoea (mean 83 ± 15 beats min(-1), range 44-124 beats min(-1)). The early development of the cardiorespiratory response is characterized by arrhythmic heart and respiration rates. The strong temporal patterns observed are being driven by the opposing requirements of maximizing time spent fasting in order to develop diving capabilities and of maximizing departure mass. This pilot study has highlighted a potentially large effect of ambient weather conditions on newly weaned southern elephant seal cardiorespiratory activity. Given the increasing westerlies and more erratic and increasing storminess associated with the Southern Annular Mode predicted in the Southern Ocean, the patterns observed here warrant further investigation

    Comparison of X-ray and gamma-ray dose-response curves for pink somatic mutations in Tradescantia clone 02

    Microdosimetric data indicate that the mean specific energy,zeta, produced by individual charged particles from X rays and gamma rays is different for the two radiation qualities by nearly a factor of two. In order to test whether this influences the initial, linear component in the dose-effect relations, a comparison was made between dose-response curves for pink somatic mutations inTradescantia clone 02 stamen hairs following X and gamma irradiations. Absorbed doses ranged from 2.66 to 300 rad. The results are in agreement with predictions made on the basis of microdosimetric data. At low doses gamma rays are substantially less effective than X rays. The RBE of gamma rays vs. X rays at low doses was approximately 0.6, a value lower than those usually reported in other experimental systems
