A Multi-Moded RF Delay Line Distribution System for the Next Linear Collider
The Delay Line Distribution System (DLDS) is an alternative to conventional
pulse compression, which enhances the peak power of rf sources while matching
the long pulse of those sources to the shorter filling time of accelerator
structures. We present an implementation of this scheme that combines pairs of
parallel delay lines of the system into single lines. The power of several
sources is combined into a single waveguide delay line using a multi-mode
launcher. The output mode of the launcher is determined by the phase coding of
the input signals. The combined power is extracted from the delay line using
mode-selective extractors, each of which extracts a single mode. Hence, the
phase coding of the sources controls the output port of the combined power. The
power is then fed to the local accelerator structures. We present a detailed
design of such a system, including several implementation methods for the
launchers, extractors, and ancillary high power rf components. The system is
designed so that it can handle the 600 MW peak power required by the NLC design
while maintaining high efficiency.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figure
Exclusive Photoproduction of Large Momentum-Transfer K and K* Mesons
The reactions gamma p -> K+ Lambda and gamma p -> K* Lambda are analyzed
within perturbative QCD, allowing for diquarks as quasi-elementary constituents
of baryons. The diquark-model parameters and the quark-diquark distribution
amplitudes of proton and Lambda are taken from previous investigations of
electromagnetic baryon form factors and Compton-scattering off protons.
Unpolarized differential cross sections and polarization observables are
computed for different choices of the K and K* distribution amplitudes. The
asymptotic form of the K distribution amplitude (proportional to x1 x2) is
found to provide a satisfactory description of the K photoproduction data.Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures available as tared, compressed and uuencoded

Octet-Baryon Form Factors in the Diquark Model
We present an alternative parameterization of the quark-diquark model of
baryons which particularly takes care of the most recent proton electric
form-factor data from the E136 experiment at SLAC. In addition to
electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon, for which good agreement with data
is achieved, we discuss the weak axial vector form factor of the nucleon as
well as electromagnetic form factors of and hyperons.
Technical advance in calculating the pertinent analytic expressions within
perturbative quantum chromodynamics is gained by formulating the wave function
of the quark-diquark system in a covariant way. Finally, we also comment on the
influence of Sudakov corrections within the scope of the diquark model.Comment: 16 pages, WU-B 93-07, latex, uuencoded postscript files of 7 figures

Dynamic correlations in stochastic rotation dynamics
The dynamic structure factor, vorticity and entropy density dynamic
correlation functions are measured for Stochastic Rotation Dynamics (SRD), a
particle based algorithm for fluctuating fluids. This allows us to obtain
unbiased values for the longitudinal transport coefficients such as thermal
diffusivity and bulk viscosity. The results are in good agreement with earlier
numerical and theoretical results, and it is shown for the first time that the
bulk viscosity is indeed zero for this algorithm. In addition, corrections to
the self-diffusion coefficient and shear viscosity arising from the breakdown
of the molecular chaos approximation at small mean free paths are analyzed. In
addition to deriving the form of the leading correlation corrections to these
transport coefficients, the probabilities that two and three particles remain
collision partners for consecutive time steps are derived analytically in the
limit of small mean free path. The results of this paper verify that we have an
excellent understanding of the SRD algorithm at the kinetic level and that
analytic expressions for the transport coefficients derived elsewhere do indeed
provide a very accurate description of the SRD fluid.Comment: 33 pages including 16 figure
High-pressure phases and transitions of the layered alkaline earth nitridosilicates SrSiN2 and BaSiN2
We investigate the high-pressure phase diagram of SrSiN2 and BaSiN2 with density-functional calculation. Searching a manifold of possible candidate structures, we propose new structural modifications of SrSiN2 and BaSiN2 attainable in high-pressure experiments. The monoclinic ground state of SrSiN2 transforms at 3 GPa into an orthorhombic BaSiN2 type. At 14 GPa a CaSiN2-type structure becomes the most stable configuration of SrSiN2. A hitherto unknown Pbcm modification is adopted at 85 GPa and, finally, at 131 GPa a LiFeO2-type structure. The higher homologue BaSiN2 transforms to a CaSiN2 type at 41 GPa and further to a Pbcm modification at 105 GPa. Both systems follow the pressure-coordination rule: the coordination environment of Si increases from tetrahedral through trigonal bipyramidal to octahedral. Some high-pressure phases are related in structure through simple group–subgroup mechanisms, indicating displacive phase transformations with low activation barriers
Management and pest management considerations on droughty soils: four year results
Four year survival of pines on droughty (Typic Quartzips~mments) soils was best for longleaf pine and Terr-Sorb -treated loblolly pine. Pest considerations include town ants and Nantucket pine tip moths on loblolly pine. Untreated loblolly pine had reduced leader and total height growth anH increased tip moth infestations, compared to Terra-Sorb and clay-slurry treated loblolly pine. Soil texture averaged less than eight percent silt and clay combined in the treatment areas
Incorporating interactive 3-dimensional graphics in astronomy research papers
Most research data collections created or used by astronomers are
intrinsically multi-dimensional. In contrast, all visual representations of
data presented within research papers are exclusively 2-dimensional. We present
a resolution of this dichotomy that uses a novel technique for embedding
3-dimensional (3-d) visualisations of astronomy data sets in electronic-format
research papers. Our technique uses the latest Adobe Portable Document Format
extensions together with a new version of the S2PLOT programming library. The
3-d models can be easily rotated and explored by the reader and, in some cases,
modified. We demonstrate example applications of this technique including: 3-d
figures exhibiting subtle structure in redshift catalogues, colour-magnitude
diagrams and halo merger trees; 3-d isosurface and volume renderings of
cosmological simulations; and 3-d models of instructional diagrams and
instrument designs.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, submitted to New Astronomy. For paper with

Determining the phonon density of states from specific heat measurements via maximum entropy methods
The maximum entropy and reverse Monte Carlo methods are applied to the computation of the phonon density of states (DOS) from heat capacity data. The approach is introduced and the formalism is described. Simulated data are used to test the method, and its sensitivity to noise. Heat capacity measurements from diamond are used to demonstrate the use of the method with experimental data. Comparison between maximum entropy and reverse Monte Carlo results shows that the form of the entropy used here is correct, and that results are stable and reliable. Major features of the DOS are picked out, and acoustic and optical phonons can be treated with the same approach. The treatment set out in this paper provides a cost-effective and reliable method for studies of the phonon properties of materials
