Effective Quantum Dynamics of Interacting Systems with Inhomogeneous Coupling
We study the quantum dynamics of a single mode/particle interacting
inhomogeneously with a large number of particles and introduce an effective
approach to find the accessible Hilbert space where the dynamics takes place.
Two relevant examples are given: the inhomogeneous Tavis-Cummings model (e.g.,
N atomic qubits coupled to a single cavity mode, or to a motional mode in
trapped ions) and the inhomogeneous coupling of an electron spin to N nuclear

The occipital lateral plate mesoderm is a novel source for vertebrate neck musculature
In vertebrates, body musculature originates from somites, whereas head muscles originate from the cranial mesoderm. Neck muscles are located in the transition between these regions. We show that the chick occipital lateral plate mesoderm has myogenic capacity and gives rise to large muscles located in the neck and thorax. We present molecular and genetic evidence to show that these muscles not only have a unique origin, but additionally display a distinct temporal development, forming later than any other muscle group described to date. We further report that these muscles, found in the body of the animal, develop
like head musculature rather than deploying the programme used by the trunk muscles. Using mouse genetics we reveal that these muscles are formed in trunk muscle mutants but are absent in head muscle mutants. In concordance with this conclusion, their connective tissue is neural crest in origin. Finally, we provide evidence that the mechanism by which these neck muscles develop is conserved in vertebrates
Matched filters for coalescing binaries detection on massively parallel computers
We discuss some computational problems associated to matched filtering of
experimental signals from gravitational wave interferometric detectors in a
parallel-processing environment. We then specialize our discussion to the use
of the APEmille and apeNEXT processors for this task. Finally, we accurately
estimate the performance of an APEmille system on a computational load
appropriate for the LIGO and VIRGO experiments, and extrapolate our results to

The Decay Amplitude from Lattice QCD
We report on the first realistic \emph{ab initio} calculation of a hadronic
weak decay, that of the amplitude for a kaon to decay into two \pi-mesons
with isospin 2. We find Re in good agreement with the
experimental result and for the hitherto unknown imaginary part we find
{Im}. Moreover combining our result for
Im\, with experimental values of Re\,, Re\, and
, we obtain the following value for the unknown ratio
Im\,/Re\, within the Standard Model:

One consequence of these results is that the contribution from Im\, to the
direct CP violation parameter (the so-called Electroweak
Penguin, EWP, contribution) is Re. We
explain why this calculation of represents a major milestone for lattice
QCD and discuss the exciting prospects for a full quantitative understanding of

Electron Conditioning of Technical Aluminium Surfaces: Effect on the Secondary Electron Yield
The effect of electron conditioning on commercially aluminium alloys 1100 and
6063 were investigated. Contrary to the assumption that electron conditioning,
if performed long enough, can reduce and stabilize the SEY to low values (, value of many pure elements), the SEY of aluminium did not go lower than
